I think we keep Patterson as a bench player this year. If he ends up improving, at least its with the Cubs. If not, hes a bench player and can't be much worse than Macias was last year. Also, if Patterson is our starting rightfielder going into the season, I give up. I'll still cheer for the Cubs, but will not have any hope for this season.

I think some people here overemphasize the importance of LF defense. Lots of teams use LF as a dumping ground for crappy defenders and do just fine. IMO Murton's defense in LF is not a valid reason to go with Pierre/Patterson in CF/RF because the offensive penalty is way too high, and Murton is really not even all that bad compared to a lot of LF's.

What do you guys think the lineup is with Patterson in right?

Horrid.

Is is really any worse than Houston's lineup from last year. Pitching and D.

Its not the ideal option, but it very well could be the best option available.

Sign Milwood and find a better option ito add offense to lineup f need be as the season progresses.

Signing one of the availabel RF to a multiyear deal is obsurd.

i agree. but hendry better make sure we get millwood. if not, our starting could be suspect, our lineup is definitely suspect, with the only strength being our bullpen.

i'm not looking forward to the season without a significant upgrade to either the starting staff or the lineup.

Houston's starting rotation was better than ours last year. You are saying we should count on our injury prone starting pitching to make the playoffs? Bad idea. And no this lineup is not the best option available.

Agreed.

But the team is probably no worse than if Wilson, Jones or Encarnacion were in right.

I'd characterise choosing Wilson, Jones or Encarnacion for right field as paying a whole lot of money for a slightly safer bet that the team as a whole sucks just a meaningless little bit less.

This front office seems most likely right now to go into next year with a lineup featuring Neifi and Cedeno up the middle, Murton in left field, Slappy in centre and something like Wilson/Jones/Encarnacion/Patterson in right field.

A lineup with huge question marks and little improvement. I don't like it one bit.

At least when the Marlins have their fire sales, they unload all of their crap. It's like we know we're going to suck but don't want to let go of some people.

Not only do we not let them go we sign them to ridiculous extensions.

I agree that playing patterson there and seeing how he does-with a trading deadline deal in the background-is a good idea-

remember 2 years ago CPatt was setting the league on fire.

Also-I am a believer that TWALK at 2nd, batting 2nd is a really good move-he's gonna hit high average and knows the game well to move our lead off hitter around the bases.

With Walker's attitude problems, he might even ignore Dusty's call from the dugout to bunt Pierre down to 2nd. :D

Murton-Pierre-Patterson in the outfield would likely once again be the worst offensive outfield in the league. As a matter of fact, if the Cubs open the season with this outfield, Hendry should be fired before the break, IMO.

I don't buy this "There's no one available" crap either. If we're in a tight spot in the outfield, it's Hendry's fault for failing to plan for this fiasco 3 years ago.

ok, then who is available? the only possibilities we're hearing are huff, wilson, encarnacion, jones. seriously, are either of those guys that great? it's not like we're choosing between vlad and corey.

huff is a huge liability defensively whereas corey would run down a ton of gappers. we don't necessarily need power from the OF slots, we need timely hitting. the white sox weren't exactly the 27 yankees with podsednik, rowand and dye with just 43 homers among them. 2005 turned out OK for them because they had great pitching and we SHOULD have that in 2006.

if pierre hits above .280, that's a lot of RBI chances for walker, lee, ramirez and barrett, and i'm confident they will get him home. if murton hits above .280 (which is very likely), then that's even more RBIs considering the guys ahead of him will all hit near or above .300.

offensively, murton, pierre and patterson have above average speed. if pierre can help corey with slapping the ball to left and/or stealing when he does get on, then watch out.

remember that we had luis gonzalez once upon a time and traded him away because things didn't click soon enough with him. when he opened his stance, he was a different ballplayer. i'm in no way saying we should give corey endless opportunities, but i just don't think the market is good enough right now to throw away a guy who still can blossom into a very good ballplayer for a guy who HAS blossomed and isn't much better than what you already have.

save the $$ and/or prospects you'd have to give up to get one of the aforementioned players and save it for a midseason deal should corey have a poor 1st half (or if someone who could really improve the team comes along).

If Pierre hits only .280, with his walk rate, he'll get on base about 33% of the time. While that's an improvement over what the Cubs got from the leadoff spot last year, it's still not what I would consider acceptable from the leadoff spot. Pierre's walk rate isn't high. He'd have to hit about .300 or higher to get his OBP over .350.
