First of all, he said this to the Associated Press in a phone interview... how often do they get these things wrong? And then the Orioles entertained exploratory trade scenarios based on a report that was never even true? There was a quote from Sam Perlozzo (O's Manager) that he had called for Tejada and never got a call back. Then the O's talk to Tejada's agent and the O's decline comment... why not a denial? Wasn't there a quote from Flanagan that he was "not confident" after talking to his agent? Why didn't Tejada return calls from the Orioles the next day? Now - it was all a misunderstanding, story over? BS. The talks already started, they can now continue at the O's leisure or they can convince Tejada they're serious and get some pitching. Either way, Tejada said it and the Orioles have now been discussing it.

Unbelieveable. Melvin Mora even confirmed that he wanted to be traded, not to mention that Peter Angelos ripped him in the paper...and then he changes his mind? Oh well, maybe the Cubs are better off. He's making a big mistake. I would imagine Sammy told him what a wonderful park, Wrigley Field was to play in.

He doesn't want to be traded, but he's really unhappy with the team's direction and he feels they aren't comitted to winning.

Think it boils down to him saying "I'm not saying, just saying..."

He's still available IMO. Now it just makes it seem not as desperate so the O's can try to get better players in a trade.

Yep...he's trying to make nice. He doesn't want to be viewed as a troublemaker, and the O's probably said "We'll trade you, but we need you to help us do it."

There definately is more to this then what Miggy just said yesterday. IMO, no way can the O's get good enough even with a Prior or Z going to Baltimore. This Baltimore team stinks unlike Philly who could trade Abreu and has the potential to take the NL East.

Maybe it's just symantics. He told an AP reporter that it may be best if he plays somewhere else. But, he never told the Orioles front office "I want to be traded....etc." Hence, no actual trade request.

It's like talking to a friend and saying that you want to quit your job, but never actually telling your employer that you quit.

When has something like that ever happpened in baseball? I really doubt he gets traded.

"Sammy - void the extra year you'd get if traded - and it'll be a lot easier to trade you - We'll get something done."

I think that situation is a lot different.

This article contradicts Tejada's contradiction. :D

Baltimore Sun

The comments appear to contradict what he and his representatives have been telling the Orioles all along. According to team sources, Tejada and his agents haven't backed off the trade demands in conversations with the club, which is why the two sides remain in talks and no resolution has been reached.

Executive vice president Mike Flanagan has been mum about the conversations, but he did acknowledge that the goal is to "try to talk [Tejada] into playing for the Baltimore Orioles," and "nothing has changed," since the talks began.

Orioles officials spoke with Tejada's agents, Diego Bentz and Fernando Cuza, again yesterday after talking with them extensively Saturday, but "there was no progress in our talks," Flanagan said.

Is it possible that he has backed off his trade demands, because of the likelihood he ends up getting traded to another team that doesn't appear to be doing anything to improve their team (Cubs) either?

Actually he said he may benefit from a change of scenery. Perhaps his alleged about face has something to do with the rule about trading a FA in the middle of a big contract. IIRC, if the O's trade him, he can request a trade the year following that trade and if his request is denied he can elect to void the remainder of his contract and become a FA. But if the O's trade him because he demands a trade, then perhaps his right to request a trade the subsequent season or become a FA goes by the wayside. Any of you rules gurus know anything about this?

I read an article that stated catcher Ramon Hernandez is one of Tejada's best friends. Could the recent preliminary 4-year contract agreement with Hernandez be enough to convince Tejada to stay put? "Well, my team will still suck, but at least I'll be able to hang out with my buddy." I've got a problem with the whole thing anyway. If you have a grievance about the direction of a team where you are one of the recognized leaders, you don't vocalize it for the world to hear, you talk to management behind closed doors. They'll respect you for voicing your opinion (if they are good managers,) and also respect the fact that you haven't damaged the team in a process to try to ultimately make them better. I love Tejada as a player, but these recent puzzling statements have not endeared him to me as a person.

Hey Glass. Long time no see posting. The scuttlebut I heard is that Tejada and Hernandez don't get along and the trade demand talks came after the Os signed Hernandez.

Maybe he's been voicing his concerns in private and feels he is being ignored. This could be a way of kicking the front office into gear. Baltimore isn't known to be a well managed organization, things have been going downhill since the mid-90s when they were once the top payroll franchise.

Believe nothing. Do you guys remember the A-Rod fracas that got kicked up right before he nearly got traded to Boston and then New York? The rumors were flying everywhere, and the Rangers held a conference with A-Rod, the GM, and Showalter, where they all (with the looks of guns being held to their heads) talked about the positive future of the franchise, how Alex really IS happy to be there, and how he was not going anywhere. And then a week later, he was off to New York.

This is all spin to either drive up the price, or to avoid an ugly home crowd in the event that he doesn't get traded.
