Per Rotoworld:

Javy Lopez doesn't like the idea of spending next season as a first baseman, designated hitter and occasional catcher. He'd prefer a trade.

Javy has spoken in the past of his future being at first base, but he's not ready to make the switch now. "Javy was signed as a catcher, he has played his entire career as a catcher, he's in the last year of his contract assuming he was a catcher," Chuck Berry said. "It is a shock to him to have this happen. He's not real happy with this situation." Lopez is 35 and well below average defensively. The Orioles have the right idea here, assuming they can talk him into it

Maybe we're looking in the wrong direction to solve our problem. Everybody knows Barrett isn't a wonderful defensive catcher. Javy isn't anymore either, but Barrett has the range to man an outfield corner (for heaven's sake, he was drafted as a shortstop).

Javy could give us better than average production for a catcher, and Barrett would provide about average offense at a corner, provided he maintains last years numbers. Weak as shortstop is right now, a team can survive without much offense coming from it. And considering the abismal offerings in available outfielders, this might be a better move for us to make.

Opinions?

He's also in his contract year. I wouldn't want him if it took giving him an extension. But I'd certainly have to give thought to taking him for a single year.

Yeah, go ahead and alienate one of your key clubhouse leaders by trading for Javy Lopez. That's what you want to do. Seriously, there is a better solution for your outfield than trading for Lopez and sticking someone who has never played the OF in the major leagues (or anywhere to my knowledge) in RF. That's assinine. I can't actually believe I replied to this ignorant post. Barrett is one of the best catchers in the NL. How about filling holes instead of trying to put together a team George Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman would be proud of. Let's put A-Rod at 3rd, keep jeter at SS, and put Tony Womack in Center! That worked well right?

Wolf could have been more polite, but his point is absolutely correct. Barrett is probably the best offensive catcher in the NL, and his defense is not that bad, so why go nuts with acquisitions? There are two players the Cubs need to be focusing on - Tejada and a decent RF (probably Bradley).

Would you do a Tejada trade if the caveat was you have to take Lopez?

Lopez shouldn't be too hard to move. We could work a 3-way deal with someone needing a catcher.

Am I really expected to take this kind of abuse from a cardinals fan?

I'm certainly aware that it's not the best idea in the world. But with the way this offseason has gone for the Cubs so far, coming up with scenarios (no matter how impossibly far-fetched) is certainly more entertaining than trying to sign Dusty to an extension.

At any rate, I certainly made note of all the items you thought so important to mock me for in my original post. So if you're not gonna be offering constructive criticism, would you mind leaving me the hell alone?
