Is there a site that lists the rankings of how the teams are doing in the off-season? I would have to think that the Cubs are in the top 10 so far.

Let's put a spin on this and see how people think the offseason has gone for any/all teams.

I give the Red Sox an A and the Marlins get an A- because they're getting an awful lot of talent back in their dealings (sure, it'll be a while before they're good again, but they're doing well with what they've been directed to do). Other than that, nobody has really blown me away with their moves.

Top 5 right now:

1) Marlins

2) Blue Jays

3) Mets

4) Padres (getting back Giles and Hoffman at reduced rates crucial)

5) White Sox (Thome for 7 mil a year and Konerko for 12 and Mackowiak is an amazing super sub)

Right now this Red Sox team isn't complete. They still have a disgruntled Manny and still haven't signed Damon. Assuming they solve both of these problems they will ned up being number 2.

The Cubs I don't think will be able to crack the top 6, unless they somehow get Abreu, Dunn, or Tejada.

Marlins #1?

How could that be possible. They traded their entire starting lineup from a year ago besides for Cabrera for mid-level minor league players who may or not pan out to be mid-to-low-end players. This was a team that could have contended for the world series if they added maybe one or two players. Now they have set their franchise back to rebuilding stages like when they were first introduced into the MLB. They got some players in return that could possibly fill out half their lineup besides for that they gave players away. They would recieve a C- from me. Cubs would get a solid B they have picked up two of the top relieve pitchers from the FA market so they hopefully corrected one need, they got a lead off hitter and CF which they needed, now they need a RF and a IFer in my mind. They have given up very little and gotten a lot more in my oppinion.

I have to disagree with the Blue Jays at #2 (or in the top 10 for that matter). Paying $20 mil per year for a reliever and a starter who has been average at best away from Miami does not make for a great offseason.

The Padres had me until the Mirabelli deal. They dropped a couple of grades in my book for that deal alone.

The White Sox I can see. They didn't need to do a whole lot, and they've done a little more than that. They'll win the AL Central again.

Mets? I'm taking a wait and see approach.

What are you waiting and seeing about with the Mets? They had similar money to spend as the Cubs and similar must have positions (there's being 1B, the Cubs having RF). The Mets have blown the Cubs out of the water.

They added Delgado and LoDuca. Big deal. They'll likely balance that out by adding Sosa within the next couple of weeks. The Mets have tried too hard to make a big splash over the past few years only to turn around and do something incredibly stupid to end up in 4th place again. I'll wait and see.

Edit: I don't disagree that they've blown the Cubs out of the water, I just wouldn't put them in my top 5.

I think Dayn Perry gave the cubs a bad grade. Most people have been down on their moves so far.

Didn't that bad grade come exclusively because the Cubs didn't sign Furcal (without much mention of what they had done up to that point)? Also, IIRC some teams were given a 'C" for making no move at all. It's completely subjective.

The off season is far from over but I would say Flordia, Atlanta, Baltimore, and the NY Yankees have had the worst off-seasons so far.

The Marlins will be terrible next year.

I would say the Mets by far have had the best off-season, it is not even close. If they get Manny it will be even better. After that I think Toronto has a good off-season as have Boston.

I think the Cubs have upgraded the bullpen and in CF but must get a big bat for right field. To date I would give them a solid C+. But they need an A for the off-season to be a success.

And Wagner. Compared with the Cubs that's a huge deal. I don't see how you can possibly name 5 teams that have done more to improve their team. I don't argue that they've had a bad history of making moves for names, but they didn't trade for Mo Vaughn here. They filled their biggest need with a huge bat. Then got LoDuca, who isn't anything special, but fills a position similar to the way Pierre does for the Cubs. And they got Wagner. This would be like the Cubs getting Abreu and Furcal, then adding Pierre.

For me it goes:

1- Marlins (they are gonna be a serious force in a couple years)

2- Padres (Giles for 3/30!)

3- Redsox (Beckett + Mota...sweet)

4- Rangers (they fleeced the Nats)

also participated:

Blue Jays - THey spent alot of money and are going to be weighted down by those big contracts in a few years, their payroll was only 50 MIl last year...

White Sox- Got Konerko back, but the Thome trade was a huge risk. Rowand was very good, and who knows what Thome will give you?

Dodgers- They got furcal, but their team is still in disarray. Kent at first? seriously now..

Cubs- DFA'd Macias! Got a couple BP arms. Probably overpayed for Pierre a bit, letting a great player like Walker slip away, Still need a stud Outfielder. Signed Neifi...

Mets- So they got a closer...Wohoo?

Sorry, forgot Wagner. Still, until Omar can prove to me that he won't screw this one up, I'll wait and see.

The Marlins destroyed any chance of success for at least 2 years. They made the most of a bad situation, but you cannot rate them as having a great offseason. No team that will suck next year because of the moves they made can be considered to have a great offseason.

The Mets only got a closer? They got a stud 1B (their biggest need), a stud closer (probably their 2nd biggest need) and a servicable catcher, something they did not have before. The Padres have not gotten better. THe offseason is about improvement. Resigning your own players isn't improvement. It's treading water. That would be like saying the Cubs had a great offseason if they simply signed Zambrano and Prior to extensions, but had no money left to make additions.

Well why don't all the other GMs have to prove anything to you? Omar stepped into a team in a crappy situation. Phillips gotted that organization. I didn't think Omar would be any good, but he's made that team better with his moves. I'd like it better if the Mets kept making stupid moves, wasting their resources on garbage, because that would make an NL rival less of a threat, and take them out of the running for other players. But they've done a better job than the vast majority of other teams.

Considering the Marlins goals (getting prospects and dumping payroll) they did a great job. Look, they knew they couldn't contend next year so they went all out with their dump. Why would get rid of only some guys and maybe be a .500 club?

If your goal is to suck next year, you don't get props for achieving it.
