Has Schuerholz lost his mind?

How much cash is Boston picking up in this? Marte? I thought they were really high on this kid. :?

Chipper Freaking Jones. Oh well, at least Marte won't be our problem from now on...to the AL he goes.

I'm trying to find the article, but I read somewhere last week that he went from being BA's #1 overall prospect to being #4 in the Braves system within a few months.

He didn't do so good in 2005 (57 AB) with the big league club, but in AAA, he posted .275/.372/.506/.878.

I've said it for ages, but Renteria and Lugo are essentially the same player.

So if the Red Sox don't pick up any money, and then send Marte to the Devil Rays as part of a package to net Lugo and Huff, then they're basically adding Huff while riding themselves of an awful contract, and they're not taking a hit production-wise at shortstop at all.

What would Tampa want for both Lugo and Huff, though? That could cost a bundle. All the good prospects will be in Florida, somewhere.

Cedeno and Hill. Regardless of what Hendry says, I'm sure they are both available.

Hill should be available, but he won't be. Hendry doesn't want to let another Willis go (to a lesser extent Sisco as well).

Marte and one other good prospect I think would do it, maybe two mid-tier ones.

I still like Huff, by the way.

Time will tell who's right, but I think Hill can be had for the right price. I can see him as a key part of a Lugo/Huff deal.

I can see why the Braves made this move. It's been clear, as my Braves fan friend informs me, that Cox was less than thrilled with Betemit as an everyday player. Also Chipper will not move from third and the Braves had doubts about Marte in left. I think they were willing to move Marte for Lugo and when that didn't happen began looking at Renteria.

I'm eager to hear if the Sox are picking up salary and how much they will pick up.

Marte will probably be in Fenway this year as the Sox's thirdbaseman. They've also added Loretta. Depending on what they do with Manny, the Sox could have a very different looking team next season.

I do too. And I think he can be had for on the cheap. The guy is done in Tampa just as Patterson is done in Chicago. I'm not suggesting a patterson for Huff swap at all.

I think he is a pretty decent baseball player and this would be a case of Hendry buying low...as would Bradley. We shall see if Hendry is into bargin hunting.

Huff is a great fit for the Cubs because he's a lefty hitter who can back up Aram and Lee.

Another Marte is on the move today. Damaso Marte was just traded from the White Sox to the Pirates for Rob Mackowiak. Reported by Levine on ESPN 1000.

Cox just really, really wanted a veteran shortstop.

I think we all just need to realize that managers are just more comfortable with veterans when possible. Even Cox, who played enough rookies last season to fill a school bus, would rather have veterans when possible.

On the radio about 20 minutes ago it was reported that Boston is most likely picking up between $11 and $12M of the $29M Renteria has left.

So if true, for Atlanta that translates to paying Renteria $6M per season.

What about Lowell?

The Red Sox only picked up Lowell because they had to pick up his salary to get Beckett as part of the deal. I would expect Marte to get every chance to win the job with Lowell backing him up.

You have to wonder what exactly the DRays might be asking for Lugo when the Braves had to look at RSox for trading partners. Maybe the Rays asking price is too much.

Yeah, that would be my impression.

And maybe the Red Sox can add a player that TB likes to make the deal.
