According to The Boston Herald:

DALLAS - The Red Sox still have an array of needs to address this offseason, but all indications this afternoon are that the Sox are on the verge of completing a trade with the San Diego Padres for second baseman Mark Loretta.

According to baseball sources, the Sox and Padres essentially have agreed to the deal that will send Mirabelli to San Diego for the 34-year-old Loretta. Announcement of the deal has been held up at San Diego’s request, perhaps until the Padres get a resolution in negotiations with closer Trevor Hoffman.

Another good move for the non-existent Red Sox GM.

No kidding. The Red Sox might want to think about GM by committee for a while. It's getting results at the moment.

I had no idea San Diego was willing to trade Loretta. We could have used him. Loretta > Walker, and he's certainly better than Neifi or Hairston.

Barrett and a prospect for Loretta and Klesko, with San Diego sending some cash, would have been a nice trade.

I really like the way this Red Sox team works. Assuming they resign Damon they're 1-2 combo is exactly what the Cubs wanted. Assuming they keep the status quo at the rest of the positions their lineup is stacked. Damon, Loretta, Ortiz, Ramirez, Varitek, Renteria, Nixon, Millar, Mueller.

I highly doubt they will trade Manny.

I saw somewhere, ESPN.com I think that there is more to this trade:

Boston gets: Loretta and Otsuka for

San Diego : David Wells and Maribelli

Still seams to me that SD is getting fleeced here, but it takes two to tango, so to speak.

It's almost a guarantee that Millar and Mueller will not be returning, Renteria is being shopped VERY heavily, Nixon's name has come up in alot of rumors and I'll honestly be surprised if Damon re-signs with Boston.

I think Boston will have a very different team come the start of the 2006 season.

ESPN does not mention Otsuka in the article and Wells talks have evidently not gotten very far.

That's because I was wrong, it's on MLB.com (Hot Stove Report). Sorry.

I've always like Loretta (NU grad and all). Good pickup for the Red Sox. But who's gonna catch Tim Wakefield?

Yah, that's what they're asking here in Boston as well. I believe Wakefield was 0-5 when Varitek caught him during the season while Doug was hurt - he even admitted afterward that he's just not comfortable throwing to anyone else. They're guessing that Shopek (sp?) will step in as the defensive "specialist" and backup for Tek - how would you like to come in as a rookie catcher and be told your first job will be to catch a knuckleballer :-P

Shoppach.

He's had experience at the minor leagues catching a knuckle baller, apparently.

Hehe thanks - I can't believe I was too lazy to look up the spelling :-P.
