I'm curious what Pierre's AVG would be if he bunted every time?

In 2004 Pierre hit .380 in (non-sacrifice) bunt attempts. In 2005 he hit .431 when bunting for a hit.

So, in other words, we should just let him bunt 80% of the time, or better. :D

I could deal with a .500 OBP from a fast guy in the lead off spot.

This is interesting stat:

We know Dusty likes guys who can excute a bunt.

The tall grass in the Wrigley field IF will only help Pierre.

I can't remember where I posted it, but yesterday I looked at the bunting BA in Wrigley vs. the rest of the league. In 2005, at least, players had a harder time converting bunts to hits in the friendly confines, to the tune of about 100 points of BA. (Something like .260 in Wrigley vs. .350ish everywhere else.) As I pointed out, though, a lot of that could be due to a lack of bunting proficiency on the part of last year's team.

Very interesting. He dumps them towards 3rd instead of 1st correct?

OK... first of all, we had a poster say:

Dan Jennings (assistant GM of the Marlins) did an interview with our local ESPN radio affiliate this morning and confirmed that the deal was for Pinto, Nolasco, and Mitre. There is no prospect from Florida coming back to the Cubbies in this deal.

but we're still taking the Muskat article as fact. Which is it? Seems more likely to me that Mitre IS included considering the sources saying that and only one source saying otherwise (Carrie Muskat...)

Secondly... the Dave van Dyck article today said the Cubs have TWO offers on the table to TWO different teams...

The Cubs are on hold after making trade proposals to two separate teams Tuesday, one involving Florida center fielder Juan Pierre.

...

Hendry's second proposed trade also involved one player coming in return for several Cubs. He has been in contact with Tampa Bay, which has left-handed right fielder Aubrey Huff and shortstop Julio Lugo available.

Does this not state that there is another team - not Florida nor TB - that we have an offer on the table to??

If you wanna go that route, Patterson hit something like .600 when bunting for hits in 2004...

Anybody want to help me promote this deal?

Pierre and a pitching prospect to the Yankees.

Carl Pavano to the Phillies.

Bobby Abreu to the Cubs.

Patterson to LA for Bradley.

What...are you Don King now? :afro:

And let's not pretend that Pierre hasn't hit in front of good hitters before - Castillo, Cabrera, Delgado. Strangely, the runs didn't follow then. Pierre scored just 96 runs in 2005 despite playing everyday.....

To put this in perspective, that's only 4 runs scored behind Furcal and among the best of national league leadoff hitters last year. As such, it's hard to fault his runs scored.

If by "help" you mean "hurt", I agree.

Pierre hits ground balls. On the ground. In the grass. they will go slowly. Fielders will get them. they will not go through holes to the OF.

He will be thrown out

It says there are two offers on the table. One for Pierre, and one for several Cub players for one player in return - then says the Cubs have also had talks with Tampa for Lugo and Huff. George Offman was on the radio this morning and said there's another offer on the table from Hendry but no one is sure exactly who it is to yet - "but they've been in talks with the Dodgers, Rangers, Nationals, etc."

Far more were fielded by third basemen as opposed to first basemen, at least. (14 vs. 4 in 2004, 20 vs. 5 in 2005.)

George Ofman just pointed out that he broke this Pierre trade earliest, nearly a month ago, with Pinto being the key player of the deal. And he's right. Score one for The Score. A lot of people seem to forget the times that The Score first breaks news. Most people only remember the times that the local media gets it wrong.

I wonder if management thinks about that sort of thing and tries to crunch some numbers on that

You have to talk to the Grass Cutters Union Local 123 and they are harder to deal with than the previous Tampa Bay GM.

I would say that the 17 caught steals, along with the .326 OBP is why his run scoring wasn't where it should be.

I have a dumb question that I'm hoping someone can answer. Does getting picked off 1st base count towards Caught Stealing?

But, as Diffusion pointed out earlier, runs scored are a bad statistic to use to evaluate a player. I think you're cherry-picking his response to a particular statement rather than actually attacking his overall point, which is that Pierre is not good.

Those of you who are really complaining that we gave up too much for Pierre....

Don't you think that if Nolasco, Pinto and Mitre were so highly regarded by other teams that we would have traded them for something more??? None of us here have a clue what offers have and have not been made in any trades involving us, so we can sit here and discuss and argue the merits or faults of this trade, but to say that we could have gotten so much more for the 3 guys we traded just doesn't cut it for me.

My guess is those 3 guys names have come up in many trade offers and other teams simply don't value our minor league prospects as highly as some of you do. Who's right and who's wrong - we'll find out in a few years, but sheesh let's just move forward from this move and see what other pieces to the puzzle Hendry tries to fill shall we?

To me, that reads as the other deal is for either Huff or Lugo.

at least we got this leadoff hitter nonsense out of the way. now we can maybe address the biggest hole on this team from day one of the offseason - RF.

Sure, but after we take care of RF, can we concentrate on CF?

I think this will average out on those type of slap hits since Pierre is likely to beat the throw on any slow hit ball to the whole even if it is fielded by the infielder.
