Seems like a high price but Hendry was determined to find a leadoff hitter. We all can hope Pierre returns to his .370 OBP years.

Next target is to find a rightfielder. It seems tougher now most of the prospects Hendry wanted to deal are going to Florida. Perhaps a Patterson + Williams deal for Wilkerson can get done.

Well, the Cubs held onto Pie, Patterson, Guzman, Rich Hill and JWill and yet filled CF. Where's Patterson going now??

I'm going to guess Washington. Bowden loves toolsy guys.

Any confirmation on whether a pitching prospect is actually included or not?

Aw, c'mon Mush--Fez is a total zero, and Nolasco and Pinto only look good because they pitched well while REPEATING AA. That's a big leap to get from AA success to useful major leaguer, as their failure in AAA in 2004 attests. None of these guys are anything other than marginal prospects.

So, good trade! When the situation is dire, you need to overpay, OK, but what's done is done. We finally have a leadoff man. You are right--if Pierre performs in 2006 as he did in either 2001, 2003, or 2004, Cub fans are going to be very VERY happy.

Cubs.com disagrees with who is included in the deal. They say that it's only Pinto and Nolasco and the Marlins are sending a prospect back. ESPN.com says it's all three with no prospect coming back. Time will tell...

I didnt say it was a bad trade but it leaves the situation for Hendry what to do with Patterson. Mitre is probably nothing more than a fifth starter but with the injuries last few years he would come in handy. Now to find a Rightfielder Williams probably with be shipped leaving our depth down to a minimum.

If we can get Bradley out of this, and SOMEHOW (I realize it probably won't happen) retain Walker...I will be content with this offense.

C Barrett

1B Lee

2B Walker

SS Cedeno

3B Ramirez

LF Murton

CF Pierre

RF Bradley

At this point, that's the best lineup we can realistically hope for. I think with our three horses all allegedly healthy, that offense would be more than enough to have a realistic shot at contending.

I'd say that Pinto's struggles at AAA were more concerning than Nolasco's struggles, especially considering Nolasco was described as "not ready" by most reports when he was initially called up to AAA. Sometimes guys need more patience than others.

I'm going to wait and see on this trade in terms of the pitching prospect from the Marlins. If it's some one who could crack the Cubs' Top 10 prospects list or some one with a nice ceiling, that could make this deal more pallatable. Or, he could potentially be used in a second trade for a RF.

Ignorant...

BA ranked them 17th and 18th best prospects respectively in the southern league, which was loaded this year. Pinto and Nolasco just happened to be #2 and #3 in the league in ERA (2.71 and 2.89), both averaging a K/IP, and 1.22 WHIPs. And although they are both repeating after failed attempts in AAA, they are both age appropriate. Also on that BA ranking was Murton (12), Jenks (13), Broxton (14), and Hill (15). Marginal, my left foot.

Walker should be kept. But its always the fear if Cedeno have a 0-10 streak Baker will give Nefi the SS for the full year.

Completely agree, Pinto should have been ready for AAA and his wildness is a big concern, but hes still nowhere near "marginal".

It appears as though there is unsurmountable evidence that Hendry wants to deal Walker. If so, he really should have picked up Castillo, we could have easily matched what the twins put together. Then we wouldnt have had to overpay for a marginal player like Pierre.

Let's say that, given the time this deal was done, Jim Hendry got Larry Beinfest really drunk and convinced Beinfest to send Scott Olsen to the Cubs along with Juan Pierre.

In possession of Olsen, do you think a package of, say, him, Williams, and Scott Moore could get a deal for Abreu done?

2008:

The Las Vegas Aces are bolstered by their incredible starting rotation of Willis, Nolasco, Gaby Hernandez, and Pinto are shooting toward their first WS appearance since they moved from Florida. Many thanks go out to the Mets and Cubs for making this happen.

In other news, Juan Pierre was arrested again after his fall from 2003 grace with possesion of crack cocaine. He also landed an additional fine by saying, "Do you know who I am?" The officer soundly resounded. "No, cracky"

Throw in Guz/Marshall and it should be a done deal.

Well, if Don Kessinger was good then I guess in that bizarro world then Pinto and Nolasco could be marginal prospects. ;)

Wilkerson & Livan from Washington would be sweet. Just don't see Bradley fitting in, and I think Oakland values him more. Abreu will be too pricey. Thus, jmo, but I think Hendry opts for Wilkerson in rf.
