  1. Best thing? If the Cubs sweep the Astros this week, they're 4 back in the loss column with 40 games left and a ton of momentum on their side. The goal is to win, right? I certainly know I am not rooting for the Cubs to fall out of the WC race. Hendry/Baker should be creative and open-minded enough to insert Murton and Pie (for the struggling Burnitz and so-so Patterson) into the line-up with the goal being to win games. If we can get back to 4GB I would say we are def back in it. I won't get too excited until we hit that 4GB mark.
  2. Well what do you think roids do? Just taking them doesn make you bigger. Taking them allows you to recover from said rigorous workouts a lot faster. I am not saying Nomar used roids, but roids is what allows you to work out so hard and have such a regimen. Yes, your muscles recover at a ridiculous pace and that's why you get bigger.
  3. I'm going to have to disagree with you. Take a look at the pic and tell me Nomar wasn't pretty well put together. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/cover/2002/jinx/00s/030501lg.jpg Sorry, but that body isn't that big. Granted, everyones bodies are different that body can be easily had by working out. He isn't ripped by any means. Ripped has nothing to do with size. Ripped is referring to how well defined the muscle tone is. If you mean he wasn't huge, fine, but that picture shows he was in fact "ripped". I think if you look at him now compared to when he was at his best, he is noticeably smaller. I'm a big fan of Nomar and want to see him produce as much as anybody, but you have to look at the injuries and fall off in #'s and consider that steroids may have been a part of that. I'm not making any definitive statement that he took steroids, I just don't think it can be ruled out. Considering these guys are athletes their entire lives I can tell you that Nomar isnt that big in the picture and granted not all steroids make you bulky but from that body I would say unlikely. He isn't cut in that pick and he sure isnt bulky. Obviously nobody knwos for certain but really if people consider him a roid user with that body, then you can consider almost all MLB players using roids.
  4. Pujols, ARod, Bonds, Tejada.
  5. I agree we can find a corner outfielder. Question is can we find two? Unless Lawton is kept or Murton starts we are stuck having to find two corner outfielders for next year. In a weak FA class and not wanting to sell the farm I really think that an outfield of Nomar/Patterson/Giles or Nomar/Patterson/(Kearns or Huff etc.) could put up some acceptable power numbers. While maybe not perfect it will be far better than what we have now. I think that Nomar can easily put up better numbers than Lawton and Murton in Left. Great point about needing to OFers although I would not put Nomar in the OF.

  7. While $12.5 million per season is pricey, it's not an outrageous sum to pay a guy who can put up a 900 OPS from CF. My only real objection to acquiring Griffey would be his health questions. (And to a lesser extent his age at the end of the contract.) The Cubs definitely need a lot of OF help next year, though, so I'm open to any deal that would get a player capable of Griffey's production. To me, the decision here comes down to just money. He is owed $12.5M per year '06 through '08 and then a $4M buyout in '09. If a deal was structured in such a way where the Cubs picked up no more than $6.5M per season and $500K of the buyout, i.e., $20M over 3+ years, I'd be all over this. Given the lack of outfield free agents, the freed up salaries of Sosa, Remlinger and Hawkins after 2005 and the fact that the Cubs are one of the top spenders, he is easily affordable if the Reds agree to the Cubs terms. JMHO. I didnt even think of that. If the Reds indeed would pay for a good portion of the salary I agree that would be a good idea. If they dont pay squat and we are stuck with the entire salary then I would say heck no.
  8. I don't believe Nomar has used steroids either, but the speculation is out there. Gammons Article ^-- Granted, the main point of the article is that Peter believes Nomar is clean - I'm just pointing out that some have thrown his name out there. You can speculate for all players then.
  9. It's .343...with 1 HR and 1 RBI. Pretty expensive to pay $8 million+ for a singles hitter with a fading glove. Considering we were paying AGon 6mil it's not that bad.
  10. Wow, all of a sudden Nomar is a roid user? Come on, let's be serious now. Nomar was never ripped and accusing him of using roids isnt fair.
  11. Griffey's contract is terrible and although we need offense I would rathe rgive up some of our prospects to acquire a younger, productive OFer than take on Griffey's contract and hive him here till 2008 or something like that.
  12. Let's hope so because Wade Miller, Matt Morris, and Joe Borowski all lost at least 2mph from their fastball.
  13. Seems like it to me, too, and I like it! Wish there was some way ballclubs could relieve themselves of at least part of the burden of that player's salary should he be DFA'ed, like the NFL. Having to pay all minus the league minimum can be quite a pain at times. Not sure to go about it, though. This could take the discussion to an off-topic tanget, but: I think that's the problem with the NFL, not something that other sports should add. I think it's unfair to the teams and the players the way NFL contracts work (or the way I seem to think they work). It's the fact that the money's not guarenteed that leads to players holding out, which is an awful thing to happen in sports. NFL contracts do have guaranteed money which usually is the bonus and then a base salary but nowhere near close the guaranteed money that baseball players have. Overall, better for the owner than it is for the players, but I also think some of the guaranteed money MLB has is ridiculous and can really hurt the team.
  14. Wood is just nasty. Too bad he cant start. I always enjoyed watching him start and dominate (when healthy and on).
  15. Wow, Prior hasn't been as dominant this year. EDIT: Where is his curve ball? He's been using slider and fb. but not his curve.
  16. This is the same catcher that was in the Cubs system for a while (Iowa when I lived in DSM a few years ago, I think). If so, he's probably playing w/ a bit of a chip on his shoulder tonight. No need to make excuses for Prior. He's been giving up the long ball a lot.
  17. ANd the human homerun machine gives up another one.
  18. Burnitz had a stretch where he was pretty good for us, but overall his number have declined dramatically from last year. He wont be back.
