  1. Why would you want to grow a beard in that Florida heat?
  2. I am reading it as the pitcher will be able to go back to a position already occupied by that pitcher in that inning. If the pitcher moves from P to LF then back to P he can't go to LF.
  3. Unless I'm reading this wrong, while the switch described in the original post, i.e. putting a pitcher at a position for only one batter and then switching him back in the same inning, can't be done, but as long as it's done only once per inning, the switch of a pitcher to a field position is legal as long as he isn't switched back into the pitcher spot until the next inning/ I am thinking LF and RF are not considered the same position.

  5. There is a separate thread about the ESPN mobile commercial with Juan Pierre.

  7. I was in a league last year run by 10man but I haven's seen him on here in a while. I thought it was going to be a keeper league but I might be wrong.
  8. I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term. This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training. they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause? Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off. I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is? Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics. Maybe they think it has more to do with Star Wars then baseball. Jedis use Jedi mind trick to get BB.
  9. The stadium they play in is in St. Petersburg, but it's not like the stadium is in the middle of the water.
  10. The Orlando Sun Rays of St Petersburg
  11. Tampa Bay Manatees
  12. I think Missouri would be a good fit but only if the Big 12 can get another school-say Colorado State.
  13. They changed the name of Bank One Ballpark to Chase Field.
  14. I might order one if someone promises to check that they actually installed it.
  15. I would grade the offseason C- to D+ range. Furcal would have been nice but the cost was too much, rather save the money for Z and Prior. Jones signing is going to end up biting is in the rear end. The three year contract is going to prevent us from signing someone better 2 years from now. Jones might be decent for CF, can he play CF in 2007 when Pierre tanks. I would have been happier with a Murton, Greenberg, Pie outfield. I say let the kids play.
  16. fixed
  17. i'll take a team full of guys with no speed, poor defensive ability, who don't sacrifice, but who get on base between .375-.425 over a bunch of guys who are great "fundamentally" in every area, but can't get on base to save their lives. we'll see who scores more runs. speed means nothing if you can't use it, or use it poorly. the point is that speed is way down on the list when building a baseball team. you want good starting pitching first, OBP second, SLG third, and relief pitching 4th. give me a team that does all of that well and you can have your gutsy little speedy guys who always hit the cutoff man. you'll get crushed. You'll have a hard time getting people out with a bunch of statues to play defense. OBP means little if the guy is left on base. You need a balance so if something isn't working that day you have other options. First step is to get on base, once someone is on base a hit moves the runner along, a hit to the OF has a better chance of moving a runner from first to third and the chance is even better if that guy running the bases is fast. Anyway the answer is balance. A 400 lb guy who can draw a walk isn't going to be playing in the majors.
  18. Overpaid for Neifi Perez, and Rusch. One year contracts to Preston Wilson or Burnitz would have been better than 3 years to Jones. Overpaying for relievers coming off good years is too common.
  19. The Cubs overpaid in every deal. Hopefully they will make a midseason deal that will put them over the top.
  20. Is Macias still available? Maybe Kelton and Greive?
  21. Do you prefer day games or night games? Which baseball stadium has the best food? Do you ever talk to Hawk Harrelson, does he know how annoying he is?
  22. Send Orton to NFL Europe. Could use a CB to stop a #1 receiver.
  23. with the search feature disabled it makes sense to split up the non-baseball into separate categories. politics, sports, TV/movie, etc
  24. did you know that Chrysler is a German company?
