He didn't play yesterday. He also sat the most recent Friday game in Pittsburgh, an April games in Philly and home to Pittsburgh. There was one other Pirates game he did not start but did get a late AB in. Groovy. I'm hoping it's not a brutally hot summer in Chicago this year still just to play it on the safe side.

Monday. Thanks Soul. Now sit him Sunday as well and I'll bet he comes back refreshed until the All Star break. I'd anticipate the Cubs sitting several players on Sunday to give them two days off to rest, especially if they still have a comfortable margin and don't feel any urgency to win. Or perhaps rest a few players on Sunday and a few more on Tuesday. I admit I haven't been paying a lot of attention but I'd hope that Cedeno gets more starts to rest Theriot and DeRosa while having DeRosa give Ramirez a little rest as well. Losing Hoff hurts giving Sori a day off because having Johnson out there along with Edmonds isn't that productive of an OF imo. Hopefully Ward comes back healthy. Has Fukudome had a day off yet?

I don't know if you can break it down within a season, but here's his season stats: 2008 - 17.7% LD%, 48.8% GB% 2007 - 20.6% LD%, 41.2% GB% 2006 - 20.3% LD%, 41.3% GB% 2005 - 22.0% LD%, 38.6% GB% His 2006 and 2007 seasons were remarkably consistent. He's flatout struggling in this regard so far this season, although I'm sure his April rates would look a lot different. Jon...what's considered a LD/ground ball/Flyball? Are you asking what a good ratio is? Or how those percentages are actually tallied and determined? How are they determined?

Maybe if this was April 1 and you were still hoping for the flukish start to the season. If you move him to the bullpen tomorrow you won't be able to trade him tomorrow, but you won't be able to trade him as a starter either. At least moving him to the pen offers a chance that he'll show something there. He simply cannot throw a quality start. So why not see if he can throw 4 effective innings now and again? Teams are always looking for relief help even if starters are more valuable. Who cares if he doesn't want to do that? He's done nothing to warrent the coddling of his ego. I agree and if his whining is the thing that is keeping him on the starting staff, I'd be surprised. Something has to be up with this that we don't know because it just doesn't make sense.

I'm thinking they have to be shopping him and hoping he'll do something that would make him attractive to a team that is desperate for starting pitching. Once he goes to the pen, every once of value he had would be gone, not even the goofiest of GM's would bite then. There's two types of teams that could justify interest in Marquis. 1) Those who just don't have any warm bodies in their rotation. 2) Those who with badass offenses that will make up for his sucking. We already see that he's still a problem for the 2nd type (the Cubs have a great offense but still struggle to get even the mediocre innings they need from him). So you'd need to be able to find a team that's just crazy desperate for a warm body out there. Going by starters' IP, the Yankees and Mets could be candidates. Texas is a pseudo contender who also doesn't get many innings from starters. But I still don't see much room for trade. The best way to showcase him may be to show he can be an effective long man, and then hopefully entice another team to think they can stretch that out into being an effective starter. Maybe Hendry is still waiting for Hill to come back as well. There has to be some kind of reasoning for him to be there and imo moving to the pen is the kiss of death unless you don't care if you get anyone back in trade. I'd be surprised that they couldn't move him to Texas for a C type minor leaguer but I really don't know the Rangers money issues (good or bad) if they could absorb a guy like Marquis financially to gamble on him. If he's stuck on this team, I'd move him to the pen yesterday.

:roll: The Cubs probably get the next-most attention from ESPN etc. after NYY and BOS, especially when they're playing well. For our fans to complain about being under-covered is ridiculous. Of course the larger point is, ESPN's coverage reflects the fact that NYY and BOS have by far the largest fanbases, followed by the Cubs. That's true along with too many of these ESPN guys being Yankee/Boston fans. Look at the scroll on the bottom for an example.....they had the NBA news and Boston vs Detroit while no other sport had that. Not once did they have LA/San Antonio.

That might be two things Lou and Hendry might not like then! I suppose Cotts could be that guy (long relief) as well. even if it meant Lieber was there in place of Wuertz, it would still be doable. i don't think TT or anyone is under the delusion that this is going to happen, it's just an interesting concept. It is. Plus, Lou did go by the closer by committee when he was with the Reds so it isn't like he wouldn't think outside the box a little.

If this sort of discussion has a take-home message, the bolded is probably it, IMO. And it's not usually everyone. No matter what you do sometimes someone is going to complain on how you did it, especially when you have a huge fan base like the Cubs. Plus, a guy may be sick and throwing up or whatever and that might be a reason why Lou or any manager makes a move that doesn't seem to make sense.

With those 6 guys, you don't have a long guy unless you do some interesting moves. if you feel like you need to have a long-man, you could stick Lieber in Cotts' spot. i don't think they need two lefties anyway. Hindsight being 20-20, I wonder if the Wings kept the pressure they had in the Penguins zone and didn't just dump the puck if that would have worked out better. Sometime when you have somebody on their heels like Pitt was, it's better to keep that pressure on. IMo, it got the Penguins more aggressive by dumping.

Is it possible they are kind of doing this by sending guys up and down from Iowa? Granted, they are not getting the rest you spoke of but it does keep them in the rotation more than going with a straight 5. Interesting idea since they seem intent on keeping 12 pitchers.
