I feel a little sad that you have to buy beer for an occasion. Or maybe I am a little sad for me that I always have some on hand...nope definitely the first feeling. what?!? so, you are saying that i should always have some on hand then? Yes, a quality 6 pack is always nice to have. Canadian style, eh?

Could Gaudin replace Marquis? What's his contract like? Harden injuries worry me and I hope the Dr.s were on the ball and knew every possible detail about his health. Pretty nice trade on paper. I wish the 4, Murton, Gally, CPatt and Donaldson the best and as long as their interests don't conflict with mine that is. Have fun in Northern Cal Peroria39 and thanks for posting here!

You've been following the Cubs long enough to realize that Nolasco had no chance to break into the Cubs rotation and even if he got the shot they wouldn't have stuck with him this long. As recently as June 5, Nolasco had a 5+ERA and was getting lit up. Sure he is having a decent run at it right now, but the Cubs are not known to be overly patient with young pitchers, and Nolasco is benefiting from being on a team that doesn't have many other options other than giving playing time to young players. I think they would have had him in the pen a lot more than the Fish did but I don't know if I'd count him out as a starter. I suppose there is something to be said about letting a young pitcher get some good game experience. That's where I give them (fish) credit, they go young and see who steps up and once they win or the guy gets too expensive they deal him and get some quality in return. Maybe Hendry should ask the Fish who they want for Nolasco and then turn them down and insert that player onto the 25 man roster! Hendry should look at the Marlins and others to find out how to have a decent minor league system. Ha...maybe so. I'd like to see what player(s) in the Cubs organization teams ask about the most.

I highly doubt it. I have never believed in the theory that Maddux makes his fellow pitchers better. People talk about it. Guys claim they've learned so much from him, but I haven't seen any evidence that pitchers actually improve upon his arrival to the team. I don't think he'd make all of them better but I think he would be a good teacher for Hill. I wouldn't like to see a bunch of people putting imput into Hills had though, it reminds me of CPatt and all the input he received, I think it hurt him overall listening to too many people and I'm a little worried this might happen to Hill. Hill has already spent some time around Maddux, and he wasn't really any good until Greg was traded. I just don't see any reason to suspect Maddux would or could help. And I really don't want to see them go after what is essentially another bottom of the rotation pitcher. I don't either but I thought that Maddux would come cheap and if it also brought Hill back into the rotation it would be a nice way of fixing the rotation without costing any quality young players that the Cubs could move for an impact player in the off season.

Well...other than that they were spot on. This looks like an interesting draft. Were there any late picks that look like the kids are going to college instead? The big one is RHP Sonny Gray (26th rounder) who was a first or second round talent but actually wrote a letter to MLB saying he was going to Vanderbilt and asking teams not to draft him. RHP Anthony Zych (46th rounder) has a solid commitment to Louisville unless he gets top 5 round money. RHP Hunter Scantling (49th rounder) had said he would go to FSU unless he gets first round money. On the flip side, SS Logan Watkins (21st rounder) was very likely to go to Wichita State but $600,000 convinced him to become a Cub. Thanks raisin. Maybe Gray wrote that letter because he knew he'd be tempted to sign with a MLB team? Wishful thinking I suppose.

I agree but if Hill came back to his 2007 form he would be a 2 or 3 type starter. Possibly true but I think we need to wait for more positive outings/results before concluding he would be able to do that this year. He'd have a fresh arm for the playoffs though! Have Maddux pitch his 5 innings and then bring Hill in to finish until he's ready.

If the Cubs did acquire Maddux, is it possible he might be the fix Hill needs?

Bonds would play for free

I prefer high heeled sandals. So does he. -
sosa had a lot of power and finally adjusted to how pitchers were pitching him. it wasn't that big of an adjustment. when you have no power or discipline to begin with, you have nowhere to start. plus sosa is one player out of how many? I realize Sosa isn't the rule but the exception but if Colvin has the tools to begin with (which I assume why he was a top pick) then he could or is suppose to develop into an impact hitter, just like Sosa was suppose to do.

So is Colvin a small diamond or coal? Too early to tell. His K percentage and BB percentage are getting much better lately. 2007 K percentage: 20.5% 2008 April through May 15th K percentage: 28.9% 2008 May 16th through present K percentage: 11.96% 2007 BB percentage: 3.05% 2008 April through May 15th BB percentage: 7.54% 2008 May 16th through present BB percentage: 10.87% Unfortuantely, at the same time his batting average is way down this year, and the loss of all those singles is really killing his slugging (his ISOP is also down a little bit, but the batting average being down is the bigger cause of the really bad numbers). So he was actually more productive last year, but his peripherals are a lot better these last couple months. It's obvious the Cubs are working with him quite a bit to make him more comfortable deeper in counts. Now when he gets more comfortable, will the batting average go back up a ways? Next year maybe? It's really hard to tell. All we know for sure right now is that he has shown the ability to hit for average last year. He has shown the ability to have a good K/BB percentage over the last couple months. What he hasn't done yet is put it together, and while I'm willing to give him a year or two before I write him off due to his adjustments, he can't be an exciting guy until he starts to put it together. Thanks CCP. It seems to me that Wilken likes this type of player and if the new Cub system of working the count is taken advantage of by Colvin it'll help him in a lot of ways. I'd be surprised if some team wouldn't be interested in a former #1 pick. i don't think that there's any hope for colvin. he is what he is, trying to radically change his approach will result in an even less productive player. Didn't Sosa radically change his approach? He's a HS kid and he's still young. I'm not saying he will be able to do so but it's best to have him be this age than a 23 year old college kid and trying to change him. Colvin is a 22-year old who was drafted out of Clemson. For some reason I was thinking he was a HS kid last year. That does change some of my thinking of him changing by the time he's 22 though!
