  1. IMO....the NL winnning this game may effect the Cubs ability to win the WS. I don't know if this stupid rule is still in existance but I'd hate to see the Cubs have the best record and have this game effect it. That being said, gotta take care of business first and have the best record of course.
  2. Nope hate the Buckeyes, grew up in West Lafayette. And you said essentially what I was implying. Sure Illinois hasn't lost a lot of players but they lost a lot in the players they lost. A good example of this is Purude in 2005. They only lost 3 or 4 starters total from 2004 but among them was Orton, Stubblefield and Rogers (top corner). That year Purdue had it's only losing season in 11 years with tiller. College teams lose players all the time. It's kind of how it works. I think you are in for a suprise with Illinois. But, who knows, maybe I'm wrong. Didn't Zook have another good recruiting year? I'm sure he has some nice freshman coming in and it'll depend on how quickly they adapt to the speed of the college game.
  3. What I didn't like when he was up with the Cubs was his tendency to pull everything....or try too. I think that is what they were talking about regarding the lead foot. I haven't seen him enough to watch his centering of the ball, what did they say was stopping that? His biggest issue at the big league level was pitch recognition. I don't recall ever seeing a player take so many strikes and swing at so many balls. I'm glad he is working on a quicker stroke. It will make him a better 2-strike hitter. But if he doesn't see the strike zone better, I'm not sure he's going to ever truly break out to potential. Yeah, letting strike one go by and then swinging horribly at strike 3 is not the way to improve. Once he starts nutting that first pitch pitchers will have to change their approach and if he can lay off the off speed stuff out of the strike zone on pitch one, he'll be in better shape. I saw Lil Patt yesterday and the count was 2-0. Pitch 3 was a low pitch that his brother would have swung at but Eric let it go for Ball 3. Little things like that add up huge.
  4. And don't forget the Cubs got Johnson for free too. He hasn't contributed as much, but he was certainly worth the cost. :D True. The farm system that has been said to be terrible, has done a pretty nice job. In the old days, baker would play none of them and cry for a Perez type to save the team with a 150 average. I have liked the way Lou has handled Edmonds as well.
  5. Pretty damn good. I think the maintaining variables might be different than what caused the initial problems. Perhaps changing Hills mechanics was the major cause of his problems at the onset. However, I have a hard time believe that those changes are maintaining the problem. I think it is partially "mental" but mostly physical. I have no idea how to correct those problems. I agree with you here. If they changed Hill's mechanics, and it wasn't working out, then you would think he could change back to what did work for 1.5 years prior in the bigs (plus the time he had in the minors with those mechanics). I'm not buying the argument that once changed, he's been ruined forever. The old, successful mechanics should have been relatively easy to recapture. Hill had a reputation before his big league time of having some concentration problems. I'm much more inclined to think he's lost his confidence and now his desire before believing a change made by LR ruined him for good. Overthinking can kill a guy like this. IMO, he just needs to take a step back, relax and have some fun playing the game. Just go out there and challenge the hitters and whatever happens, happens.
  6. I blame Theriot and his stupid high OBP.
  7. They play in an easy conference but they have to get by USC first.
  8. I've heard through the grapevine that Coach K is going to schedule the Duke football team once this Louisville thing is resolved. Of course, it'll be a home game.
  9. What I didn't like when he was up with the Cubs was his tendency to pull everything....or try too. I think that is what they were talking about regarding the lead foot. I haven't seen him enough to watch his centering of the ball, what did they say was stopping that?
  10. What may be kind of ironic is that all these non deals the Cubs hav made may have been the best move they have made, along with picking up Edmonds for free. The young guys have done a nice job of stepping up imo.
  11. Do you really want Pie to work the count at this stage and end up in alot of two strike counts? I want him to get a good pitch to hit and try to hit it hard. He's never going to be a high BB guy, I'm more concerned with him putting the ball into play hard rather than BBs. Which saying becoming less of a free swinger and me saying getting a good pitch to hit is different in semantics only. Although, I disagree with him needing to work the count at this stage. I'd be happy with better mechanics and pitch recognition.
  12. Hill just needs to breath through his eyelids. Where has it been said that the Cubs wanted to change his mechanics? They were fine with them last year until this year. Is it possible that batters just are not swinging at his balls as often as they did in the past? Granted, he seemed to be way out of the strike zone but I wonder if the lack of swings early in the count has changed his approach and aggressiveness in challenging hitters. I always thought when he came up with Dusty he was trying to be too cute and didn't go after hitters like he did before he was called up.
  13. Sully had to beat the deadline and the bourbon started talking to him and told him of this deal. Hmmm...Hendry has the green light for a pitcher, eh? I hope Z is alright and if he isn't Hendry is going to have to dump the farm to fix the rotation.
  14. Their wives have to do naked mudwrestling at the 19th hole.
  15. I'm happy with this man in right. He's a solid all around player and it's nice to see a Cub player that can do a lot of things pretty well.
  16. Our local paper (weekly) in my small home town used to have the scores of LL games and a brief summery of each game, it was awesome. I forgot about that until I read this thread and I think it's pretty cool to see some still do it and not just for the All Star teams but the regular LL.
  17. Hendry knows when to hold 'em. Hopefully he'll learn to walk away or when to run. Does he count his money when he's sitting at the table? That's the Trib's job!
  18. Hendry knows when to hold 'em. Hopefully he'll learn to walk away or when to run. I really don't think the Cubs have enough young guys to pull this off unless the Indians like a couple of guys more than other teams do.
  19. link? Which paper? Syracuse Post Standard....sorry! They picked it up off the news service, where, I don't know.
  20. The paper had a little article about Bedard who told his pitching coach he was gassed after 6 innings. McLaren admits Bedard isn't "capable" of going more than 6 innings. Is this because he was hurt or is hurt or just a guy who is happy with 6 and out of shape? I'm thrilled the Cubs didn't overpay to get this guy.
  21. There's not really a time there where it wouldn't take away from the All-Star festivities. With the Futures Game on Sunday, Workout day on Monday, and ASG on Tuesday...there's only Wednesday that it could happen. Also, I doubt MLB would want to put the energy into it then when they are focused on the ASG. The only option to keep a viable game there is either create an exhibition with minor leaguers or have an old-timers game. Neither is nice as having two major league teams come in and play. But with teams focusing on staying rested and fresh and avoiding injuries in a meaningless game, there's not much else that can be done. Have it on Wednesday after the All-Star game and give the two teams who participate the day off Thursday for travel before playing Friday. Better yet, have the All-Star game there every year. People will hand over $20 just to look around.
  22. and the Cubs front office having it out for the guy. Wuertz, Hill, Pie, Murton....quite a list they have going What has the front office said/done to make you think they have it out for Michael Wuertz? burying him in AAA a couple years back for one When did that happen? 2006 I don't think the front office has it out for Wuertz, but I don't think Lou is particularly fond of him. He seems to have a pretty quick hook with him, moreso than the rest of the non-Marmol/Wood relievers. I think Lou doesn't really have patience for pitchers that don't throw the ball over the plate consistently.
  23. So Darle was the cop in Die Hard?
  24. IMO, Lou wasn't too keen on the guy so I wouldn't worry about him going to Chicago. I also liked the fact that Lou said that the Cubs have some deserving young guys ready to come up.
  25. Maybe, but I don't think it hurts to get in touch with him. Also, I'm not as confident as some of you that it'll only be six weeks. He might be off the DL in six weeks, but I think that injury is going to linger and affect his bat. This isn't a wrist injury -- it's the hand, and very similar to Utley's last year. For further insight, here's what Will Carroll had to say on the injury: What constitutes Cub fans criticizing any certain player? We all did this? 5% did? 35%? What? I hate statements like that. And what constitutes Cubs fan being panicked? I'm not. I know. I forgot to add that too, ridicules.
