While I disagree with the premise, it is surprisingly well written. I kind of like referring to the last few years as the Luis Valbuena era. I personally prefer the NoBueno era. Still. Leave Bryant in Iowa a few weeks. Hurts nothing, especially if they pick up a left fielder. Gets Alcantara, Baez and Valbuena in the lineup at the same time to see if Baez can do something or if Valbuena is your second baseman for the bulk of the year and depending on the OF situation if things are shuffled there resulting in Valbuena at 3rd, FA OF in Center and Al Contra at 2nd. I don't have much hope for Baez.

Of course! But we don't have much to work with. I love that the Cubs' front office is so tight lipped, and that moves come out of nowhere, but the lack of rumors is hard. My wife and I are from the same hometown, and "coming home for Christmas" has become synonymous with perusing the latest rumors and moves by the Cubs, and actually having time to post on NSBB, but this year it's quiet. Oh well. I'd love to see them package Nobueno and Wood with Castillo and get back a solid left fielder and a slightly better Tommy LaStella.

Also saw today that the Cubs have a flexible pay schedule with Lester. Essentially each year isn't a set amount but they can defer payment some years and pay him more in current years subject to what the Cubs plan to do with the payroll that year. Supposedly it is pretty unconventional and Lester only agreed to it because of his relationship with Theo/Hoyer. And because 20 million up front.

Recent high profile targets: FA: Furcal: No Bradley: Yes Pujols: No Fielder: No Sanchez: No (though talk didn't really heat up until the report that we'd signed him) Trade: Roberts: No Harden: Yes Peavy: No Granderson: No Garza: Yes And of course, Epstein: Yes The one that came to mind for me was Juan Pierre, though that was a little older. What about Pudge? Carlos Lee? Had quite a lot of discussion about Beltran after the 04 season, pretty much demanding that Hendry went after him and being pissed that it looked like he made him a token offer to appease the fan base. It's a damn shame that part of the NSBB database was lost forever. I want to go back and read the 2003 playoff game threads. Why would you want to do that to yourself?

I live fairly close to the action in Ferguson. Went down and bought a "hands up, don't shoot" t-shirt. I'm pretty sure I got a white guy discount. They were asking 15 for the shirt, and I told the guy I really wanted one but could only pay 10. He gave me a "thanks for the support" look and gave it to me for 10. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other, just wanted a piece of history.

It is my understanding that Lester will not sign with Cubs unless and until this thread reaches 100 pages.

I'm sure you get the point that umpire "respect" for established pitchers has more to do with pitches off the plate being called strikes than a catchers ability in that "skill". This is a time where the numbers lie, or at least we can't discern how much of the number is being generated by which factor.

Unless there are deferred payments, they should be done. 8 year contract ended with the final out of the 2014 season. I'm a little surprised that wasn't more celebrated. Why? Presumably, because he thinks most Cubs fans are really dumb. I'm actually pretty surprised Kaplan didn't have a countdown on his Twitter or something. Not just this. As I said in my first post, I recognize that it doesn't have anything to do with anything. It does however feel like the end of something. Like the last symbolic remnant of paying for past performance.

The excitement around the Maddon signing is palpable. While there no real connection between these two things, it really feels like the beginning of something new.
