  1. Not all of those are even upgrades
  2. If you're at or over .500 and you sell, just fold the team.
  3. Nothing would surprise me from Fields this season. He could play himself out of a job or into the MVP and I would say "yeah, that doesn't surprise me." My guess is he has a good enough season that his status as a no. 1 QB isn't in doubt
  4. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the team 5 games under .500 is more than three pieces away.
  5. We were one of the pioneers of the strategy in the 90s
  6. Cubs suck at developing pitching. There. I covered it in one sentence.
  7. I strongly dislike the concept of "core." An organization controls the rights to a large number of baseball players with varying degrees of importance of impact. Placing a special sticker that says "core" next to some of their names doesn't really add insight.
  8. It's been a lot my time, but I vaguely remember the standard sabr estimate being contact outs were worth about 5 runs per 100 over strikeouts. So hoerner not K-ing is worth about half a win a year
  9. I also think we overvalue Wesneski, so I'm consistent on that one
  10. I feel pretty confident that there's no 25-year-old AAAers out there that I'm absolutely dying to have, in any organization.
  11. I generally hate the idea that you need to just hand mediocre prospects playing time because they're prospects. There's value in having the organizational self-respect to make people earn playing time. If you can't beat out some random 30-year old AAAA player for playing time then you aren't enough of a prospect to care about
  12. In Anthony Rizzo's age-25 season, he put up an .899 OPS in the majors, finishing 4th in MVP voting and hit two homers in the NLDS series victory over the Cardinals. In Matt Mervis' age-25 season, he put up a sub .600 OPS and failed to beat out the likes of Trey Mancini and Nick Madrigal for playing time, resulting in him being sent down for his fourth look at Iowa. I'm not exactly worried we're gonna miss the boat on this one.
  13. Will it, though? Will a two-month callup really settle anything on these guys?
  14. (lineup construction barely matters) ((this team can barely use all the fringe mediocre prospects it has now, bringing in a bunch more in a selloff won't gain us anything)
  15. Did not expect this thread to return to relevance.
  16. I'm fine with hating los angeles but I can't think of any reason anyone would love San Diego. It's just a smaller, hotter, less interesting, more conservative version of L.A. LA:SD::Chi:StL
  17. Similar experience different sport: I once scored a hat trick in a pick-up hockey game populated by ex-college players, a few low-level pros and some Korean national team hopefuls. I more or less stood in front of the net with my stick down and let them bank it in off me, like a much shorter, fatter Byfuglien.
  18. It's not buying the bar a round unless someone gets a second drink.
  19. Being within 3.5 after tonight if this holds is kinda hilarious.
  20. Short answer: No. The difference between good teams and bad teams isn't large enough to be a noticeable influence over short bursts of schedule.
  21. Wesneski sucks. This rotation is gonna get worse for the next few years
  22. So long story short we don't have anything anyone would want except Stroman and we would like to keep Stroman
  23. It's kinda nice that 10 years later we're still going with the fake job titles we made up to help Theo get out of his Boston contract.
  24. Sure, that could be your takeaway. Or you could be impressed by the Brett Dokstra reference.
