  1. I'm starting to wonder if the front office that has never figured out pitching still hasn't figured out pitching
  2. imo, always let the players vote on a captain.
  3. I'm not at all completely convinced he's an MLB starter. He might be, but he certainly hasn't proven it.
  4. An offense that can actually pass and thus operate a two-minute drill should win a few more of those high-scoring games I keep coming back to it: if fields is the guy people keep insisting he is, this team should win football games. If they don't, he isn't.
  5. Getting swept to not only destroy our season but fix the Cardinals will be hilarious
  6. The next tier doesn't extend that far, but this isn't the NFL draft, it's not as easy as packaging extra picks to move up. The value drops too quickly
  7. For real tho, that is part why 1-run w/l isn't a skill teams possess. Good pitching keeps your 1-run losses from becoming multi-run losses and a good offense turns one-run wins into multi-run wins
  8. I don't know, how many? What was their average performance in their sixth inning, compared to the average performance of the remaining cubs bullpen, and how does that translate into win percentage in a tied game in the top of the 9th? Even if you can prove it was definitely the wrong decision, which I don't think you can, the difference is going to be a tiny fraction of a win on average
  9. As long as he's not Dustying the pitching staff, managers don't matter that much. They're convenient scapegoats for frustrations over a team experiencing negative variance.
  10. It's just negative variance. Winning close games isn't a persistent skill outside of some small margins
  11. We just had a game like two days ago where people were mad at Ross for not leaving Assad in when he was deaing. There's no good way to manage a mediocre pitching staff.
  12. I'm not sorry. I can learn to live with BPA and I'll even keep my mouth shut on "ceiling" and "floor." But once sports fans are done doing to "generational" what they did to "elite," we're gonna be running out of words. It's part of how language evolves but I still hate it.
  13. Neutral draft strength? Probably not quite then. But he'd be a no. 1 pick at this age in neutral draft strength
  14. I'm struggling to come up with a comp for Bedard. I've seen some people say smaller Crosby, but I kind of like describing him as a SuperKane. He's got possibly the best wrist shot on the planet right now, let alone projecting it as he gets stronger His skating is not quite McDavid but in a world where McDavid didn't exist you'd call it elite. He's got every bit as much agility as a young Kane, with more top-end speed. He's also Kane's size and just as disinterested in the defensive zone and backchecking as a young Kane was. He's going to need linemates who can go to the boards and retrieve pucks for him. But the best defense in hockey is still taking the puck and skating it down to the other end of the ice 180 feet away from your net. If league scoring stays high and he gets decent linemates, it would be completely unsurprising to see him putting up 120 points seasons in a few years
  15. But I also said I'm ok with there being none sometimes. There's some room for dissent, but the majority of experts seem to think he's not as good of a prospect as McDavid or Crosby was. If he's being put into the same group as them, we might as well plan to subdivide it into Supergenerational and regular generational because we will need something to differentiate the levels.
  16. If you go that low, then Bedard qualifies, but now you probably need to subdivide because he'd be weak relative to other generational guys
  17. I'm ok with having concurrent occasionally so long as we also sometimes have zero.
  18. I would put Bedard at the top of tier 2 and draft-day Kane tier 3.
  19. I would settle for one every 10ish. I know it's just the nature of sports slang and you can't fight common usage, but it still makes my head twitch a little. Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, McDavid. That's four in 40 years, or one a decade on average. Gotta draw the line somewhere. Once you open it up to Ovechkin and Jagr, the slippery slope kicks in and next thing you know you're wondering if you should count Toews *and* Kane or just one.
  20. I don't think there's a lot of market for letting the Blackhawks trade up. The value curve is a lot sharper than the NFL. The first few picks tend to be pretty high value and after that the rest of the first round is throwing darts.
  21. Obviously we know Kane turned into a perennial all-star with excellent playoff performances. But heading into the draft at this point in their careers, Bedard is better than Kane was. He's faster and has a better shot, and a better off-ice profile. (They do profile pretty similarly defensively. You're not going to get a lot there). I think "generational" is thrown around too lightly. Bedard is the best prospect since McDavid, but I think most (not all) scouts have him a half-step behind McDavid at the same age. His 90th percentile projection is McDavid-level, his 50th percentile is about Kane. I think if you didn't account for how their careers turned out and *just* went by who they looked like on draft day, and you put the last 20 no. 1 overalls into a draft, Bedard would go somewhere in the 3rd-5th range. Definitely behind McDavid/Crosby. In a cluster with Matthews and Ovechkin. Kane would slip to maybe just outside the top 10.
  22. I know it's inevitable because of how language works, but "generational" gets thrown around more lightly every year
  23. As a Ducks and Blackhawks fan, this works pretty well for me.
