  1. Thanks to the recent hot streak, Hendry leaves with a 749-748 record as GM.
  2. Who was the USA Today writer who looks like an idiot now?
  3. I know we had a thread elsewhere, but I'd like to hear who people are hoping for as a full-time replacement.
  4. We'd expect nothing less from you. Well done. I aim to please. It's not like the Cubs would ever let an interim guy take over with some season left, then keep him on full-time.
  5. Randy Bush, interim or not, tempers my celebration
  6. A DH should be treated as a replacement level fielder and then compared to the other batters at his position. No need to put up "absurd" numbers.
  7. I'd think on the high end of that. Maybe something like 2/$16.
  8. "fact." How many small market teams have had the success the Pacers have had since the 90's started? The brawl destroyed their reputation but people are glossing over plenty of years before that. From the 89-90 season they went to the playoffs 16/17 times. And had 9 consecutive appearances before the brawl. How many big franchises can even claim doing that? Any? In the NBA land of get your superstar and win your title they were successful without it. That's called building a great team. I'd call that building an okay team and being too dumb to get out of NBA mid-tier hell.
  9. If the Cubs are such idiots for wanting to cut him, surely somebody will offer something of value for him if we pick up the salary, or they'll agree to pick up some of the salary.
  10. Good article but I don't like the argument that I hear so often of "well a guy like Rabbit Maranville is in, so to keep a guy like Player X out is obscene." Just because there are weak HOF candidates already in the hall shouldn't be an excuse to put "Hall of Very Good" players in. I'm a small hall guy, so naturally that argument is flawed to me. The phrase "Hall of Very Good" drives me nuts. The sentiment that they should only be honoring the unquestionably great players is fine, but it's not like it's called the "Hall of Unquestionably Great" either.
  11. Hahaha, classic Law. He can't help but call the Cubs winners, but he writes about nothing but the flaws in the prospects and how bad the MLB team is.
  12. "In order to clear up any uncertainty, we've decided to announce Jim Hendry's contract extension right now."
  13. I wonder if the beat writers can stop burning Zambrano effigies long enough to do some real stories on the size of this investment by the Cubs.
  14. He turned out to be wrong about everything too, iirc.
  15. He's got a high ceiling and might have gone top 3 rounds if he were signable (I think Keith Law really liked him) but he's definitely not valued by anyone as a 1st rounder. That said, this was what it was going to cost to buy him out of his Vandy commitment. I really doubt that is still true.
  16. I'm planning on using some sort of Hitchhiker's Guide reference.
  17. If/when Jackson takes over CF, we'll have our entire up-the-middle be pre-FA, homegrown players.
  18. Organizational lack of impact bats in majors and minors Hole at 1b next year Tons of money coming off the books Two impact bat 1b on the market, with few major markets besides us needing them, both of them coming from major divisional rivals who would be in big trouble without them
  19. I promise to post even more if they sign either of them.
  20. The front office may actually be playing this right. After John McDonough's statements at the end of the 2006 season, everyone knew the Cubs HAD to pour buckets of money into a name free agent or two. Now, everyone assumes they will spend big again. Leaks like this (as well as the early season Wrigley discussions) imply that ownership is getting thrifty, thereby lowering expectations and strengthening Hendry's hand at the table this winter. I hope you are right. I fear you have them playing a good game of checkers when in reality they are having trouble coloring inside the lines.
  21. I don't have a problem with the way the Cubs handled this, and I'm not particularly upset if Zambrano goes away, but man are the city's beat writers annoying the crap out of me with this one. "ZOMG WE KNEW IT HE'S A CLUBHOUSE CANCER AND HAS NEVER HELPED THE CUBS WIN A SINGLE GAME AND HIS ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING THAT IS WHY WE LOSE AND ALSO HE'S KINDA DARK-SKINNED."
  22. I wonder how different recent Cubs history would be if the post-2006 FA market hadn't sucked so hard in terms of top-end talent.
