  1. At the risk of being UMFan-level creepy, google her. You don't want pics. That's not creepy, that's just looking out for your fellow man. I don't think Bob googled her for Calves' sake. Amateurs at being creepy. I've got her address (and, by extension, UMFan's).
  2. As with all references to women on the internet, I've already formed an opinion about her appearance and asked her to be facebook friends.
  3. Vitters 1-for-3 with a single and ... another walk! I hope it's a coincidence that he's had no extra-base hits during this little walk streak.
  4. I just flashed back to October 2007.
  5. explain Looks like everyone did it for me. But seriously, talk to a cop. Distasteful as some may find it, there are apparently certain high-stress situations where a well-dropped N bomb will get the other guy to take notice and take you a little more seriously. Just being honest. Way to throw the cops under the bus.
  6. Andy MacPhail talked about emulating the Braves, which probably wasn't a good idea considering they relied so heavily on having 4 aces and finding 4 aces ain't easy. He talked of drafting and developing pitchers and then acquiring hitters later, which is fairly inefficient. He also talked of "contending within the division" as his primary goal. MacPhail had his sights on the commissioner position and was more about keeping steady. Ricketts has much more power in terms of the direction of this franchise, and much more of a reason to worry only about this franchise. They had very different roles, and I think they had different views on what needed to be done. That's all a reasonable way of looking at it. I was just thinking about lots of talk about emulating the most successful team at the time and lots of focus on the farm system.
  7. To be fair, though, has Ricketts really said anything that Andy MacPhail didn't say when he took over? Other than give a little more respect to statheadedness.
  8. I think it's so coveted because of the relative payroll differences and the chance for glory. The Yankees have to contend with the Red Sox, the Mets have the Braves. The Cubs just have the Cardinals, and after that it's all small market.
  9. One thing about Beane is that he would not be gun-shy. I bet he'd be attracted to a big, audacious move like Fielder or Pujols. That said, I bet that attitude costs him points with Ricketts.
  10. Can we get Dusty Baker added to the expletive filter? It's the worst thing anyone can say to a Cubs fan.
  11. Didn't it just get a huge cash infusion from venture capitalists? It may suck but it is relevant. It's relevant because it's a SEO content mill for sports. People can't resist linking idiotic sports opinions and having all their friends click on it.
  12. Mark Grace was sold as someone who would develop a middle-of-the-order power hitter. Didn't seem to hurt him. 2005 was Corey Patterson, 2006 Ronny Cedeno (and to a lesser extent Juan Pierre), 2009 was Milton Bradley. He was traded in 2010, when Carlos Zambrano began a two-year reign.
  13. For the most part, Lee didn't seem to have an issue. We have one Designated Scapegoat at a time. He wasn't around long enough for it to be him.
  14. Seriously. How [expletive] hard is it to field your position at pitcher? Or throw strikes.
  15. Laying the groundwork for next year's scapegoat, after Zambrano becomes this year. Beloved stars of the last 20 years: Mark Grace, Kerry Wood, Ryne Sandberg Run out of town: Sammy Sosa, Carlos Zambrano, soon-to-be Aramis Ramirez. If I were Starlin Castro, I wouldn't be making plans to retire here.
  16. Does Rosenthal understand the Cubs could still sign Pena for next season as a free agent? I can understand if the Cubs don't get an offer worth taking, but to use 2012 as the reason for pulling Pena back is kind of dumb. I think the question is whether or not the Cubs understand that.
  17. Vitters with 3 BB in his last 7 games. That's like a million for him.
  18. The investment world is full of guys who found a market inefficiency, got rich, watched the market catch on, and spent the rest of their lives trying in vain to replicate the success. I still think Beane looks like one of those guys to me.
  19. Just in case it wasn't clear, the 4.6 and -2.6 are career numbers. For the season, he's at 2.8 and -1.4. I do think he'll be a positive defensively at SS eventually, and at his peak should easily be a 6-WAR player.
  20. Based on Ricketts' statements, I'm guessing the extra draft/IFA money came straight out of the MLB budget. We may be looking at something like $125 million next year.
  21. Because guys like Fielder and Pujols are available now and the Cubs can afford them. You don't need to use Starlin Castro's pre-FA years as justification for that.
  22. All of which is very exciting. But he's got one pre-arbitration year left and he's still a 3-WAR player if you take the most generous estimations of his defense and a 2 WAR player if you don't. Not exactly the caliber of player that makes me think "Oh man, you can't possibly afford to waste these sweet cheap pre-FA years." You don't seem to understand what the heck people are talking about when they refer to wasting his cheap years. By the time he no longer has any flaws, he'll make $20m a year. He'll presumably be a much better player by then, so I'm more worried about those years than the next one. His immediately upcoming cheap years, it looks like he'll be an above-average starter, but not much more than that. Our farm system had better be producing those with regularity in the future, so why the pressure to not "waste" these years?
  23. For a SS having a slightly less valuable season than J.J. Hardy in 1/3rd more playing time.
