    All of which is very exciting. But he's got one pre-arbitration year left and he's still a 3-WAR player if you take the most generous estimations of his defense and a 2 WAR player if you don't. Not exactly the caliber of player that makes me think "Oh man, you can't possibly afford to waste these sweet cheap pre-FA years."

    Castro is a nice piece, but he is nowhere near the kind of player you worry about "wasting" his cheap years. Why not? He's already about a 4 win offensive player right now at age 21 and should only increase his power in the next couple years (and already has taken a step up from last year). I'm not saying he's for sure going to be a superstar, but given what he's done so far, it would be stupid to say he is nowhere near that kind of player. If by "4-win offensive player" you mean "on pace for less than 3," sure. And his defense is still a problem. Edit: Well, let's say "on pace for about 3," depending on what site you use.

    I think that's a needed dose of reality for a lot of Cubs fans. I think he made some good points, but he completely ignored the Cubs' biggest advantage: The relative weakness of their division.

    Tampa fans seem pretty confident that Friedman is super-best-friends with a bunch of people in their organization and that he has Unfinished Business there. Houston fans seem pretty confident that Friedman has a bunch of Astros gear from when he was a kid in a secret drawer in his office and can't wait to break it out.

    If that's the case, we should be able to compare the number of really bad starts Zambrano has compared to other pitchers in some way, and see if it's really out of line. That's a lot more involved than just saying "He had some really bad starts, so let's not count those." 40.5% of Dempster's earned runs allowed came in 6 of his 26 starts 62.7% of Garza's earned runs allowed came in 7 of his 24 starts 50% of Zambrano's earned runs allowed came in 6 of his 24 starts I'm sure if we looked at all the more or less reliable pitchers in the league, you'd see most of them fall into the same "boom or bust" pattern.

    He's been pretty bad this year. Teams taking him on are going to be doing so out of the hope that he rebounds at least somewhat next season. I havn't been following as closely as I have in years past, but hasn's Z actually been pretty close to his career averages but been brought down by a handful of disasterous outings? Avoiding the disastrous outings is a pretty important skill. Every pitcher looks amazing if you let them take out a few bad starts. I'm not sure this is true. If you take out outliers on both ends, I think some pitchers will look very different than others with comparable overall stats. That's probably true, but it's subtly different from "He'd be his normal self if not for a few terrible starts."

    I really liked this one. I think this sums up what the Cubs need to do, and are capable of doing: "Develop your own talent and, if you sign a free agent, make sure he’s a star."

    If a buzz builds up that all the Friedmans of the world want to be here and that this is a marquee destination, I feel like Ricketts has already won half the battle.

    If more than one team wants him, then the Cubs aren't over a barrel. If he still has value to other teams, the Cubs can get that value.

    Is that a list of who you want or who you think it is gonna be because I wouldn't want most of them. Phillips was a terrible GM. With his penchant for terrible contracts he'd be Hendry-lite. Ed Wade did ok setting the Phils up in the early 00's but the Astros are total bottom feeders under him. Littlefield was a bafoon with the Pirates. MacPhail and Ric would be acceptable. Epic.
