    It's not as large of a promotion. But whether or not it is on the right side of some imaginary "promotion/not a promotion" line is not reasonably in question.

    but his job duties will remain pretty much the same. boston could argue that ricketts is essentially the team president AND owner. And I could argue that Fenway Park is essentially a sewage factory. That argument won't get me very far, because it isn't true.

    Give me a break. We all know what is being done here. We're being creative with titles so that we can try to pass it off as a promotion, but we want Theo to be the GM. If we are truly hiring him as "President of baseball operations" and somebody else as GM, then, sure, it's a clear promotion. But I don't think that's what we're paying him close to $20M for. This is far from assistant GM to GM or any other traditional promotion. Given that Epstein has chafed in the past about being under Lucchino, the idea that no longer being under a President is immaterial is absurd.

    Selig can pretty much do anything. Best Interests of Baseball, and all that. No he cannot. There is no best interests of baseball going on here. If he sides with one of the counterparties that would be a big no, no. If he says. "guys you have until X to get this done", that's another matter. But I don't even think he'd do that. Well yeah, he'd set deadlines if he did anything. I don't think anyone was suggesting that he'd take a side. The question wasn't whether Selig would do something. It was whether he could. And he could. He could tell the Red Sox "You guys are dumb, I'm in charge of you now" and release Epstein himself before burning down Fenway, if he wanted to. His powers are almost unlimited.

    And the answer is clearly no. Epstein reports to someone who reports to the owner right now. He will not under the Cubs.

    December, 2011. Epstein is still being held hostage by the Red Sox, despite his attempts to get them to let him go. Tom: How could they not fire you? Theo: I never thought I'd fail at failing. Tom: Aw, come on there, now. Theo: I feel like I can't do anything wrong.

    The Red Sox are going to let $6.5 million burn, and that's certainly worth more than the entirety of Australia.

    That's only because a trip to Australia would take away from the 70% of income he puts in savings. The Red Sox taught me that making empty threats around here convinces some people to give in.

    I don't know if I'm willing to stipulate that Epstein is more of a "sure thing." I can think of a few examples off the top of my head of GMs who have had success in multiple places, but that's just anecdotal.

    If they lose someone like McNutt because they weren't willing to take someone like Hahn or Coppolella, I may have to burn down Australia.

    There's a vast difference between eating a sunk cost and entering into a new cost. The Red Sox aren't paying $6.5 million to get the prospects. They are threatening to burn their own $6.5 million if they don't get the prospects. That's also a vast difference.

    Sure I can fault them. I just did, and I intend to continue doing so for several more pages and anytime the subject comes up again in the future. Okay, stipulated. Given that, the proper thing to do would be to stop talking about it at all because we have no real information to discuss. That's boring, though, so I'm going to pretend like the information we have is at least worth discussing.

    *tries to recall something he said earlier about Machiavellian foolishness and something someone said on BBTF about Gordan Gekko fantasies.* I don't recall, but it was really clever. Anyway, just saying it's "negotiation" is still a silly argument.

    You start high and you work your way down, by asking for a Low A ball player with no ceiling in return, you're making the Cubs fan base do handstands, and probably leaving something on the table. I have to negotiate contracts every day...it can be annoying as hell but people understand parameters before speaking and then you work your way to a middle ground in which both parties can agree to. I'd like to procure from you an invitation to the SoSH main board. I'm going to start the negotiations by asking for you to also include your wife. Just startin' high.

    Would I sell the GM for $3.5 million? Depends on the situation. If he wanted to leave, had a year left on his contract, and would cost me an extra $3 million to keep (beyond forfeiting the $3 million I was being offered), then yes, I probably would. Negotiation does not mean being insulting. The Cubs presumably didn't open with Epstein + Ellsbury for $3.5 million.

    Now that others have convinced me McNutt is better than I realized (sue me, I don't always keep up with the minors), then I'd have to say McNutt + $3.5 million is still too much, unless Epstein is getting to bring several key pieces with him. Even then, I'm not sure I'd do it.
