  1. Cynic produces detailed transaction list and the resulting WAR totals. Rebuttal: You used the wrong WAR. Cynic redoes the work with the different WAR. Rebuttal: You couldn't have afforded all those players. Cynic redoes the work with a lower budget Rebuttal: You can't have known those players were going to succeed. Cynic redoes the work using projections from the time instead of results Rebuttal: Yeah, but that team wouldn't have made it, because some of those players didn't reach their projections.
  2. You're looking at this all wrong. We get to be just as excited when they win *or* smug if they lose. It's no-lose.
  3. We had an old guy in our town who made slideshows of all the sports as just a hobby. As in nobody asked him to or wanted him to. No sport was immune from 8th grade cheerleading/track all the way up to varsity football. Dude was weird. When I was in high school he had been doing it for over 15 years. The number of towns I've covered HS sports in on a regular basis probably goes into the triple digits, and I'd say roughly half of them had some variant of that guy.
  4. I've gone to HS football games in the past when there wasn't anything else to do and I wasn't working. It's a big part of a small-town community. But this year, I've crossed deeper into being a depressive weirdo and I don't think I can watch HS football without thinking about all those studies that say these kids are screwing up their brains on every play.
  5. You're going to hate how I'll have no problem simultaneously glorying in our awesome team and dumping on the front office.
  6. Admit that you've been similarly intoxicated lately It's in the NSBB Constitution that nothing said in the game thread counts.
  7. This seems irrationally optimistic. If not for injuries you're EXPECTING us to go to the playoffs 9 out of 10 seasons? It's either that or admit that being terrible for three years sucks and isn't awesome.
  8. The Cardinals' talent base is close enough to ours to give them a good shot at taking us down a few times.
  9. Once it starts, that's 8 out of 10. The only team to do 8 out of 10 since the 1990s Braves was the Yankees. That's a ceiling, not a reasonable expectation.
  10. Who makes the playoffs 5-6 straight years in the current parity-heavy environment? A team in a division that doesn't have to worry about anyone else flat out buying one and has a ridiculous amount of young talent. Lots of other teams in the division have ridiculous amounts of young talent. I'm glad to know The Plan has made us magically immune to runs of injuries or negative variance.

  12. Are we? 2003-2008 was pretty good. I don't think it's a slam dunk we beat it. From 03-08 we averaged 84 wins, which looks amazing after these last few craptacular seasons, but really isn't anything special. If that's all we manage from this prolonged rebuild I will be quite disappointed. I'll be disappointed too. But crap happens. The Texas Rangers' No. 1 farm system and awesome generation of young talent yielded them three playoff seasons and now they're in a dump again.
  13. That's the mid-year of their fifth season. Don't hurt yourself bending over to set the bar that low. Come on, we don't need to go through all that [expletive] again. If we're a consistent playoff team from 2016 moving forward, I'm happy enough. With the only caveat being if we don't win a WS during the regime, it's still a failure to me. Apparently we *do* need to go through it again.

  15. I'm surprised at the near universal positivity about an interview where Theo left 15 outs for the FO should we fail to spend money this offseason I'm not going to go bat [expletive] crazy if Lester gets 7/175 and Scherzer gets 8/200 and we miss. It just puts more pressure on us the following deadline and/or offseason to get some things done. On the other hand, as silly as those prices on Lester and Scherzer may appear-if we did pay that to get one if them-I'm not going to complain either. So ... no failure conditions. Epstein has done such an amazing job grooming this fanbase.

  17. I can't believe you guys didn't reach that point 10 years ago.
  18. That spray chart of pitches put in play when Chapman hits 102 is so bonerific.
  19. We can do way better than Logan Watkins in the infield bench.
  20. Having too many good players is still not something to be avoided.
  21. I'd take him, but a) He's just one guy on the market, and I doubt we'll ever be a "get that one guy" type of team. We love value too much. b) He's got a jacked-up version of Castillo's fWAR inflation. Last year it was a silly defensive number and this year's a crazy BABIP.
  22. Between the OF and C, are you seeing 2 starters? Probably not. The OF will be a tweener type who doesn't mind not starting every day, and there are never any good Cs so mineaswell keep Castillo there.
  23. The Tanaka money is long gone and funding some Nebraska senate race or something by now along with the extra groundskeeper savings.
  24. Yeah, it's the whole "I'm a Professional so I can spread myself out over 30 systems and know more than you could possibly hope to about your favorite team's prospects" thing that all the prospect pundits do. I did enjoy his BP Podcast and am sure he'll do a fine job.
