  1. And I'm okay with that. The difference between Marquis and Hill, while large, is at least cancelled out by the difference between the Brewers' lineup differences versus righties and lefties. I'm not convinced the Cubs aren't doing this for stupid reasons (their weird insistence that Hill is a marginal rotation guy), but it's the right move.
  2. About as weird when they declared the 2003 NLCS a tie midway through game 6.
  3. I was pretty harsh on the organization for the last time Hill was skipped, because it was asinine. I still don't get the whole "pull him after five innings or the first sign of trouble" kid gloves, either. But this isn't really a "skipping," it's a simple, smart rotation shuffle for matchup purposes. The Brewers lineup, along with the Cubs', is one of the most brutal in the NL on lefty starters. And getting Zambrano an extra start against our true rivals for the division, the Brewers, is a smart move. I'm not sure if they were really being smart, or if they are still idiots about Hill and idiot-lucked their way into the right decision, but this was the right decision.q
  4. Marmol's leverage index has improved nicely of late, up around 1.8 now, and he leads the league in expected wins added.
  5. The PECOTA-adjusted playoff odds report on baseballprospectus, which I'm a big fan of, has the Cubs at 96 wins and a 70% chance of making the playoffs, best odds in the National League and behind only the Yankees.
  6. Using pythagorean record *is* a projection system. It represents the adjustment you make to your preseason projections as the season wears on.
  7. He's got a ways to catch Cedeno's .957. doesn't matter... you don't bench a guy OPS'ing .893. You play who you believe is the better player, period.
  8. This. Cedeno was the better player coming into ST, he was the better player on Opening Day, and he's the better player now. He just has to keep performing in his limited opportunities to hope it gets noticed.
  9. I agree. I am trying to figure whether they have ever started this well (i.e., not just winning, but pounding teams) in my lifetime. Don't know how old you are. I glanced through all the "good start" Cubs teams I could remember and didn't find any 14-6. 2003 and 1985 made it to 13-7, though. 1969 started 14-6.
  10. Tall, Dark, and Handsome. Well duh. But I take it he doesn't look as lost? He got robbed on a third hit on a swinging bunt and a bad call at first. He made consistent contact, lots of fouls and few swings and misses that I recall. He didn't crush anything.
  11. 14-6. This means: On pace for 113 wins (that really makes me appreciate what the Mariners did). Can go .500 the rest of the way and match last season's record. Need to play .535 the rest of the way to win 90. Need to play .605 the rest of the way to win 100.
  12. Ronny Cedeno is personally ruining Kerry Woods' save total.
  13. Ronny Cedeno, starting shortstop, your table is ready.
  14. Fukudome gets a respect call on a borderline 2-2 pitch.
  15. Marmol's trend of making half his appearances when the game is not within 2 runs continues. And it needs to end.
  16. D'oh, fielder's choice but no run. That wasn't on my outcome list :(
  17. Murton stared down one of the juiciest fastballs he'll ever see on 2-1. Just below the waist, just to the inside side of the middle of the plate. He's praying for a walk.
  18. Outcome odds of Murton at-bat: Walk: 40% Ground ball RBI FC: 20% GIDP: 39.9% Other: .1%
  19. Fantasy players all over the country are checking their rulebook to see if Pujols now qualifies as the awesomest 2b in history.
  20. Is there anyone in the entire freaking country who doesn't have a mediocre Harry Caray impression? It must be a requirement for citizenship.
  21. My head knows that a two-run lead isn't a bad place to use Howry. My heart hurts knowing he's out there in April in a closish game.
  22. I've said all along the Brewers are a mid-80s win team, because their bullpen and defense really are that bad. As a stathead, I almost even hate saying that, but it's true.
  23. Brewers just pulled a Phillies on a game-ending DP, now tied.
  24. I thought Pie was out on first look, but safe on replay.
  25. I don't mind Pie not being pinch-hit for here. Two-run lead, you want his defense out there, and he needs PAs.
