  1. From August 4-9 last season, Derrek Lee had a stretch of 3-for-25 with no extra-base hits and 7 strikeouts. Had that been the first time Cubs fans had been exposed to him, might they have decided he was overmatched in the bigs and wanted Daryle Ward?
  2. Started Pie versus righties and Johnson versus lefties, just like the original plan at the beginning of the season. It'd take at least a month, maybe two, before I deviate from any Opening Day plans based on on-field performance. Then again, I'm not a big believer in "playing the hot hand." I compare it to timing the stock market. All it does is guarantee you'll miss the beginning of what otherwise would have been a hot streak, and always get the beginning of the slumps.
  3. All of those scenarios still make the Cubs the type of team that are swayed to make playing-time decisions by small streaks. And that is a bad thing.
  4. I think I just saw a notice on the ESPN crawl line that the game will be shown in all markets, including New York and Chicago.
  5. Sam will always be in a lose, lose even bigger scenario. He's going to have to prove he didn't do roids, show documentation of his workout schedule and then he might be considered clean but the chances are he never will be able to do so. Given that he was a proven cheater whose statistical profile fits a PED user almost perfectly, I'm okay with that.
  6. I'm mostly worried about what it says about the Cubs' decision-making processes that jobs can be taken away after four games. If they thought Reed Johnson was a better option, they should have given him the job outright. If Pie was going to be completely overmatched by big-league hitting (which I still don't believe, everyone has slumps), why was he given the job in the first place? Why didn't our scouts see that?
  7. While I would agree it would be nice to see him miss more bats, Chien MIng Wang for the Yankees has done alright without really striking a lot of guys out. That's a good example, but Samardzija so far (emphasis on so far) is another step down the "low-K ladder." Wang K'd 84 in 122 innings in AA at the same age Samardzija is now, so I think that ratio (.69) is a good minimum goal for Jeff this season. If it stays in the .5 range, there's reason to be concerned.
  8. Only 3 Ks for Samardzija again tonight. I know Ks aren't his game as a sinkerballer, but you've got to be able to miss minor-league bats. I just don't see how he projects to major-league success anytime soon.
  9. I'm a bit young to be thoroughly familiar with the 85 team, so I was looking down the baseball-reference page. Offense looked decent, maybe one too many black holes between CF, C and SS. Starting pitching seemed to be a net positive despite the many, many different starters. But ouch, that bullpen behind Smith. Eek. The 2004 team looks like a very good comp to me, and I don't think that's a bad thing despite how it turned out.
  10. I wouldn't mind facing them in the playoffs. If they could beat us as an inferior team last season, we should be able to return the favor.
  11. My thoughts: The Reed Johnson bandWGN is going to fill up a bit too fast, but I have to keep reminding myself that he's not a Neifi. He was a good pickup whom we've got some better-than-expected results from. The offense is really good. Not this good long-term, obviously, but really good. The underperforming Cubs are just as numerous as the overperforming ones, so the hot start isn't too inflated. The Cubs need to win at a .611 clip the rest of the season to reach 100 wins. While unlikely, I think that's within the upper regions where they project.
  12. Racism is the belief that certain races (usually their own) are inherently superior to others. Offensive racial humor is usually based on the idea that certain races and cultures have stereotypical characteristics (which can be positive or negative) that can be sources of humor. It's a valid and important distinction. An example that shows the difference: Racism is false. Japanese people are not inferior. Offensive humor can be based in truth. People of Asian descent tend to have slanted eyes, and a person whose first language is Japanese will likely have an accent when first speaking English that includes pronouncing "l"s as "r"s. It's not an appropriate place to find humor, but it's also not racist.
  13. Are you defending the shirts now? Or still just fixated on whether the message is racist or not? Why split that hair when you think, "They are insensitive, rude, offensive, stereotypical and wrong?" Because I think accuracy and distinctions are important. To quote that kids book, "The Giver," "precision of language, please!" There is a real and valid difference between offensive attempts at humor and actual racism, and it is important to understand and be able to identify the difference between the two.
  14. It's just that we've seen this Reed Johnson story before. And we've seen the Pie story before. Mediocre veteran comes in, has a hot month, then gets playing time long after he no longer deserves it. Young player with great minor-league numbers comes up, doesn't immediately start hitting, fans and management overreacts and presumes he is no good, player sits on the bench during important development time, player burns out. Then we wonder why we've developed one good position player since Grace.
  15. So why doesn't TBS get all kinds of angry letters when they play "A Christmas Story" every year?
  16. Announcers starting to notice that Cedeno has good at-bats. Good sign for him.
  17. Don't we still get 12 more games against the Pirates? 24-6, that just leaves 66-66 in the rest of the season.
  18. lol, Yahoo's gamecast is behind and I thought you were joking until the Cubs broadcast brought it up.
  19. How are they any less racist than references to Pearl Harbor? I keep hammering this point, but racism is the belief that some races are inherently superior than others. Neither a plane nor the slanted eyes shirts are racist. They are insensitive, rude, offensive, stereotypical and wrong, but not racist. And how is making a product that highlights consensus negative stereotypes about a particular race not suggesting that that race is inherently inferior? Pronunciation differences are negative?
  20. Really? Somebody should tell the Cubs then so they'll take him off the 25 man roster and use it for somebody else then. That's not how we do things. They need to keep him and only play him sporadically for two more years, robbing him of key developmental time. Otherwise, he'd go on to another team and be good, thus making them look bad.
  21. I really hope Brenly is wrong and that Dempster isn't being left in for the "win" opportunity.
  22. This is beginning to remind me of a Clement start.
