  1. He's younger, cheaper, and a better option than both of those two. He'll take his lumps, but getting him experience now will pay off quite well down the road. Plus, he's good enough right now that he'll likely be a better option than Marquis and Lieber right now. Think of it like Pie and Reed Johnson, imo. I'd like to see some evidence that he's better right now, the way Pie is better than Johnson right now. His 2007, translated into MLEs, was average at AA, good at AAA and horrible at the majors. PECOTA has him roughly .2 ERA better than Marquis and about the same worse than Lieber. All in all, I'd put him in the rotation, but it's not a case of a definitively better player sitting like it is with Pie.
  2. I've seen Lieber and Marquis pitch four good innings before, too. Not that I'm against Gallagher starting, but it will take more than this to convince me it's more than six of one, half-dozen of another with those guys.
  3. Soto is 0-for-11 in the last few games, but before that he was red-hot. Tough crowd.
  4. It was a hanging slider. Of course, this is a day that will be impossible to hit a hanger out. Derrek Lee thinks otherwise. That was a fastball. You can still hit the fastball out, but when the wind is blowing this hard, a hanger usually won't have the necessary velocity to get thru the wind. I seriously doubt the 7 MPH difference is the difference between getting a HR and it being utterly impossible.
  5. Lee defeats the pitcher, the yard and the cameraman with one swing.
  6. Reed Johnson is overmatched by major-league righties.
  7. Woohoo! That was about the only way we were getting a run out of this.
  8. Remember cases like this whenever somebody tells you that "proven major leaguers" are more reliable than minor-leaguers.
  9. The Diamondbacks fans are probably saying the same thing. I've seen hate for everyone ranging from Marquis to Hill that was understandable, but what's up with the hate for Gallagher? I'm not saying the guy is great or anything, but hating him at this early point in his career is kind of a head-scratcher. I don't hate him, he's just not that good. He and Gonzalez are both sub-average pitchers are this point in their careers, though neither is horrible.
  10. The Diamondbacks fans are probably saying the same thing.
  11. I think it just depends on how often he hangs a slider, to whom, and whether men are on base when it happens. You think someone can actually homer today? Maybe, maybe not, but they can rip extra-base hits.
  12. Ramirez is looking at some very borderline pitches and getting them called balls. I like it.
  13. I think it just depends on how often he hangs a slider, to whom, and whether men are on base when it happens.
  14. He doesn't walk people because he's nervous. He walks people because he's not good at throwing a baseball where he wants it to go.
  15. Fascinating stat from Baseball Prospectus today: Only 2.7% of Fukudome's fly balls are caught by infielders.
  16. This guy's fastball is nothing, but he has a nifty slider.
  17. GRIT-tastic bunt single for Theriot, giving him the opportunity to extend his chase for the NL record in caught stealings.
  18. *sigh* When Reed Johnson starts versus righties, which shouldn't happen, don't bat him leadoff. Please.
  19. *eh* I figure he's about the same as Lieber or Marquis, maybe a bit better than Marquis.
  20. Thi-.... Ah, I give up. Theriot is probably better than I thought, though still inferior. But I still give up.
  21. 50th percentile PECOTA projections: Edgar Gonzalez 5.23 ERA, 10.1 H/9, 2.4 BB/9, 5.2 K/9 Sean Gallagher 5.17 ERA, 9.1 H/9, 4.1 BB/9, 5.8 K/9 Neither liked particularly well.
