  1. No, but he caught it pretty much at the wall.
  2. Why would they want to look at stats? They watch the games. That's all that matters.
  3. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/945598,edmonds051208.article :banghead: This team is the best Cubs team of my lifetime, and they are making it so freaking hard to root for them. Not alive in 2004? I think this team is a smidge better.
  4. nobody wants to sign him, they want to just trade marmol and/or felix for him. i wonder how long until theriot's BA is higher than khalil's OPS Might as well trade Pie for him. Might as well trade Pie for anything. no, might as well make smart baseball decisions. that would be nice. That doesn't appear to be an option.
  5. *rationalization mode* Well, I prefer Edmonds vs. righties to Reed Johnson. All this really does is kill my fantasy that someday Pie would start regularly.

  7. If you get cut by the worst offense in the league, you have a home on the Cubs.

  10. This is the same board that said a one-pitch flyout by Lee was better than a seven-pitch strikeout by Theriot, so I'm sure Lee did the right thing. Please explain to me how DLee stealing third in that situation could have possibly helped the Cubs? Takes away the force out at third, ensures he scores on an infield single, WP, or passed ball. It's not likely, but it is possible.
  11. This is the same board that said a one-pitch flyout by Lee was better than a seven-pitch strikeout by Theriot, so I'm sure Lee did the right thing. The breakeven point in this situation is way over 85-90%, so he'd essentially better be absolutely sure he'll make it.
  12. GRITIOT single. He's a legit .350 OBP hitter in the bigs, I think.
  13. It's baseball, so there are no guarantees. But I'd put it at 70/30, which is about as far as I'd ever put an MLB game.
  14. Wow, I'm looking over this Padres lineup and it is just hideous. Absolutely hideous. Even away from Petco they are hitting .247 .313 .379, which puts them in a close fight with Washington and SF for worst offense in the league. They have managed the impressive feat of putting up a team VORP of -0.6. That's right, their offense as a whole has been below replacement level at this point (and VORP adjust for home park). The Randy Wolf scouting report from fangraphs: 65% fastballs at 88 MPH, 10% sliders at 80, 15% curveballs at 67, 10% changeups at 78. Seems like he has a lot of variation in his speed. Career GB/FB of .95 (what's the wind doing tonight?), getting smoked for a 29.1% line drive percentage compared to 21.4% career.
  15. Zambrano vs. this lineup, at home, and the Cubs'lineup vs. a very mediocre-at-best lefty. Nothing is a gimme in baseball, but I like this matchup more than any game we've had all season.
  16. Lefty starter. No Pie, for once, makes sense.
  17. That's a pretty contrived situation, especially since even scenario 2 likely results in at least a tie in the ninth. When the first guy in the eighth got on, a reliever should have been brought in. If your second best reliever gives up a double to the first batter he faces in the eighth, and it's indicative of the kind of pitcher he is, there is no post-season for your team. If Marmol can warm up more quickly than Wood, which I think is the case, that's the only reason you need to not have Marmol as the ninth inning "closer." It's a simple and unavoidable fact that, on average, a pre-9th inning "leverage" guy will pitch more crucial outs and innings than a pure closer (every 1-3 run lead, ninth-inning only). The perfect situation would be Marmol pitching both pre-9th inning key situations and nailing down 9th-inning, one-run leads.
  18. Was that the game where Aramis wore #15 and Lofton wore #1? I was there too! Then the next game they went to their usual #16 and #7 respectively. Good times.... good times. That game infuriated me so much it was the first and only time I ever took a break from the Cubs. I did everything I could to avoid any baseball exposure for two weeks, then came back to find them four games over again.
  19. First major league start of his career, with little notice, against the team with the best record in baseball, he pitches a shutout through 4 innings, and that's a BAD start? What planet are you from? He didn't pitch a shutout through four, and on the planet I'm from, the fifth inning of a major-league baseball game also counts. I'm willing to give him some credit for the fact that Fox let in inherited runners. Gallagher left the game with the bases loaded and one out, a situation that on average leads to 1.61 runs being scored, so I'll say Gallagher gave up 3.61 runs in 4 1/3 innings. That's an ERA of 7.50. There are no circumstances under which that can be called "good" outside of maybe Coors Field in a hurricane. And I notice that people pointing out the circumstances don't ever mention that the wind was howling in as well. A 7.50 ERA with the wind blowing in? Never good. There were encouraging signs, certainly, and I like that he's getting another start, but it wasn't good.
  20. Sean Gallagher will have some good starts and some bad starts in his career. No amount of moving the goalposts will change the fact that this was a bad one.
  21. So he's decided that Pie's feelings will be least hurt by being benched behind an inferior player after being told he was the everyday centerfielder?
  22. I wish more consumers of information would express this opinion to headline writers and their bosses. In the world of headline-writing, it's a 50/50 split between intelligent people and people who think word-play is cool.
