  1. I wouldn't have a problem with Furcal-Pierre-Castillo all on the team. It would be a departure from what we have, but if we add the right player in RF, we could have enough power. I'd probably use this as my line-up: SS Furcal 2b Castillo 1b Lee 3b Ramirez RF ? LF Murton CF Pierre C Barrett P
  2. You can also add if LSU didn't totally collapse in the second half against Tennesee to your "what ifs" as well.
  3. According to this, the Marlins are in full fire sale mode. Everyone knows the Cubs interest in Pierre. Why not Castillo as well? What would it take to get both players? If the Cubs sign Furcal, could they afford to offer both Walker and Cedeno in a deal for Pierre and Castillo?
  4. LSU now up 23-0 on Ole Miss. Geuax Tigers!
  5. Cuban would be a great owner. You can be sure that all profits would be put back into the team in some fashion.
  6. It appears Johjima will make his decision on Tuesday. Link
  7. Along with Hill, the Pirates DFAed Tike Redman as well.
  8. I don't think Sheff would drop balls on purpose. He wants to win. On the other hand, I'd rather not have a disgruntled Sheff. In spite of Sheff's problems, they have never gotten in the way of winning.
  9. If Sheffield is available, I'd love to ask the Yankees to be able to ask him his feelings on playing in Chicago. If Sheff wanted to come to the Cubs, I'd love to have him. Slot in fourth between Lee and Ramirez and you'd be pressed to find a more potent 3-5 in the National League.
  10. LSU with a safety and a TD and lead Ole Miss 9-0! Geaux Tigers!
  11. The Dodgers have a GM opening. Have you applied? Since you have all the answer's to the Cubs organizatinal plans & understand all of what their scouting department sees, I'm sure you could put that on your resume. FYI, Why don't you wait & see what's happens, via trades, Rule V, etc. before drawing your pessimistic conclusions? I think comments like this are uncalled for. SSR has every right to criticize these moves. Defend them if you can, or else just keep your snide comments to yourself.
  12. And this also means the Pirates now also have nothing left to show for trading Ramirez.
  13. Hendry doesn't think the re-structuring will affect the Cubs much. Link I find it interesting that Hendry hasn't made a formal offer but yet Kinzer knows what limits the Cubs have set. My guess is Hendry doesn't want to negotiate until Furcal makes up his mind to return to the Braves or not. I also think that may indicate that the Cubs will go further than any other team so far and Kinzer is looking for a better deal. We all know Kinzer wants 5/50 or more. My guess is the Cubs won't go that far...probably 4/40 or 5/45...something like that. Kinzer wants more and the Cubs have laid a framework to get something done if Furcal decides he wants to play in Chicago.
  14. I'd love to target Quentin, but if we're expecting to play Murton in LF and Cedeno at 2b/SS, I think Hendry is going to look at more proven commodities.
  15. Link This probably should be expected, but after a dissapointing season, I'm not sure this sends the right message.
  16. It looks like I'm back in for now.
  17. Vance, did I miss something or what but where is Jerome Williams? Id much rather have him as our #5 than Rusch. I dont think you had him traded in your original scenerio so I was just wondering. I also would rather have Williams as a number five. My guess is Williams is either in AAA waiting for an injury to the rotation or has been used in a trade. With the way our roster has shaken out so far, if I'm the GM I'm shopping Williams in a deal for a bat.
  18. I only want Lofton if we still have a gaping hole at lead-off. While he isn't a bad option and if he repeats his last year's numbers, he's a good option...but the possibility of a tail off is huge with him. If we sign Furcal, I'd rather have a hitter that brings more to the table than Lofton. Like I said earlier, Mench isn't the best option...but he's clearly better than some. It's also pretty evident he's available. I'd love a dream scenario where we sign Furcal, trade for Bradley and then trade for Castillo instead of Pierre. Imagine this line-up. I might even roll the dice with Patterson then or sign Preston Wilson or Juan Encarnacion. SS Furcal 2b Castillo 1b Lee 3b Ramirez CF/RF Bradley LF Murton CF/RF Patterson or Wilson or Encarnacion C Barrett I think the 1-6 is good enough to compensate for the weak spot in the seven hole. Here is a question for ya. If you had to choose between getting Castillo and Furcal who would you choose. Assuming Furcal would cost us 5/50 and Castillo costing us Walker and Hill. Castillo would make about 4 million less per year than Furcal. That's a tough question. If I knew the Furcal money would be spent to acquire a big bat, ala Giles...Castillo in a no-brainer. But without that assurance, I'd rather have Walker and Furcal in the line-up.
  19. I could see Fontenot and Greenberg being selected.
  20. There;s other pitchers I'd rather take a chance on than Pavano. I doubt the Yankees can eat enough of the dollars to make it palatable.

  22. Against that beat-up secondary, Horn should have a tremendous game. I'd go with him.
  23. To answer why I included Mench: First, he's reportedly available. Texas has some interest in what the Cubs could offer. Secondly, he's 28 yrs old and fits the mold of the type of player Hendry would pursue. Third, he has a decent slugging percentage that I think would make him a capable fifth place hitter. Fourth, would I prefer a better option? Yes. And if a better option such as Wilkerson, Dunn, Abreu is available we should definitely pursue them. My main goal was to put some touches on what could happen and discuss whether it would be enough.
  24. Also, with the above line-up you aren't adding much salary. Bradley likely won't make more than 5 million. Furcal is the only big additon salary wise. Mench will be a 3 million player. The remaining roster would likley be: SP's: Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Maddux, Rusch. Bullpen: Dempster, Eyre, Williamson, Novoa, Ohman and one of the remaining minor leaguers. Bench: Neifi, Blanco + ?, ?, ? By going with that line-up, there's likely 10-15 million left under budget. That money could be used to add a starter or spent on bench and bullpen. I think the above is very plausible. I'd prefer Giles, but I'd take a long look at doing the above.
  25. We could move Cedeno in the 2-spot then, and slide Bradley to sixth to give the line-up a little more balance.
