  1. I'd prefer losing Pinto over losing Marshall or Hill. I'd prefer not trading any of them for Pierre. In fact, I'd prefer not trading anyone for Pierre. Would you rather trade for Pierre at his salary for one year or overpay Furcal for multiple years? My guess is that we'll do both.
  2. By my guess, we still have enough money (10 million) to get a SS and still have roughly 10 million for the outfield if we're playing with a 105 million payroll. While that's probably not enough for Giles, we could still take on someone else's right fielder in a trade. If we deal Walker, that would free up another 2.5 million to go toward the acquisition.
  3. I doubt a deal happens before Friday. My guess is everyone is asleep now and will not work on a deal tomorrow.
  4. Those who vote "no" should be careful. Mrs. Burnitz may come along and tell you to die.
  5. I hate to give up Pinto, but as long as the other minor leaguers aren't Harvey or Dopirak, I can probably live with it. I'd rather Castillo than Pierre, but I also wanted Dotel over Howry, so apparently the Cubs have little concern of my feelings this offseason.
  6. Ok...I don't have time to read through nine pages. Someone give me the cliff notes version of this thread.
  7. Replace the abysmal production the Cubs got in CF with even a sub-par Beltran and there may have been a difference in 2005. The Cubs barely missed the playoffs in 2004 and that was with a horrible group playing SS (Gonzalez, Martinez, Rey Rnez) until July 31. Tejada would have likely made up the difference that year.
  8. In the Cubs' case, I don't think it's a matter of them not spending enough money. They need people in positions to spend it wisely. The Cubs had higher payrolls than 3 of the 4 teams playing in the LCS's in 2005. I agree that in a general sense, it's not a matter of spending enough money. On the other hand, I don't believe that Cuban would allow 2-5 million over budget to prevent him from acquiring the FA he wants. You think that the Cubs were only $2-$5 mil away from competing, though? In the case of Tejada, they didn't pursue because of Alex Gonzalez's 5 million. That wouldn't have gotten in Cuban's way. He would have likely signed Tejada and then traded Gonzalez eating whatever $$ were necessary. In the case of Beltran, he wouldn't have allowed the unresolved Sosa issue to get in the way of things. And I think it was about 5 million that got in the way. That was what we couldn't fit into last year's budget.
  9. Portland officials are already getting ready to make their pitch. Link I'd put Portland as the front runner to get the team if they move.
  10. If this signing happens, we have the following guaranteed in the bullpen: Dempster, Williamson, Howry, and Eyre. (This is with Rusch in the rotation.) If we go with a seven man pen, which I believe is a bad idea, we have three spots for the following candidates: Ohman, Wuertz, Novoa, Williams, Hill, Wellemeyer, JVB, Mitre and Koronka. A trade of at least one, if not two or three of those guys, must be in the works. Mitre, Ohman, and Wellemeyer are all out of options. Hill and Williams could be used as starters at AAA however. My guess is Ohman, Wuertz and Novoa round out the pen. Hill is likely at AAA and Welly and Mitre and likeluy Williams are on the trade block.
  11. Good luck, David.
  12. Only if he uncovers McGwire's hidden steroid stash.
  13. With Lowell, Delgado, Beckett and Burnett all gone, what motivation do they have to trade Pierre or Castillo? The payroll can't be more than $25m right now. They aren't strapped with those guys. They probably don't feel like they have to dump either. I think they'd be willing to move them, but now that they are no longer payroll strapped, they can hold out for better deals. They will not "give" away Castillo or Pierre. If a team wants one or the other, they will pay with premium minor league talent.
  14. Could that even happen? I just can't see the Cubs moving anywhere. With the Rangers already in that market, I don't think that's a possibility. Also, why spend the money to purchase the Cubs if you want to move them? That's not a likely scenario at all. If he wanted a baseball team in Dallas, I'm sure he could eventually get Hicks to sell him the Rangers.
  16. I believe the Cubs hold a buyout of about $3.5 million for 2007 and the Cubs should do that. They simply can not afford to pay him so much, especially for a #3 starter at best. If Kerry posts a 3.20 ERA, 11.35 K/9, and a 2.03 BAA in 32 starts, he'll be a lot better than a number three starter. That's ace material there.
  17. With Petit and Anabel Sanchez, the Marlins should have a decent young rotation anchored by Dontrelle in about 2-3 years. If they can get back on some sound financial footing, these deals may not end up all that bad. They have gotten some top prospects so far. I wouldn't hold out hope getting Castillo or Pierre on the cheap. It looks like the Fish have decided if they're going through this fire sale, they want top minor league talent in return.
  18. Who needs Girardi next year when Fredi Gonzalez is still available.
  19. Wouldn't theRed Sox likely rather rid themselves of Clements dollars instead of Wells? Also, the Red Sox may want to keep a LH starter around as well. My guess would be that Wells is the one dealt, but I don't think you can rule out that they may be willing to trade Clement.
  20. I'm not so sure. Clement loved Chicago and he and his wife were very close to Prior and Wood. My guess is he wouldn't mind being reunited here.
  21. One thing Cuban would do is attempt to pursue impact free agents. He'd be willing to pay for the media attention and splash an impact free agent would bring. He's not always able to do that in the NBA because of the salary cap, but he tries. While I don't think Cuban would overspend dramatically, I also don't think he'd let a few millions over budget keep the Cubs from acquiring whoever was deemed was the free agent that could put this team over the top. For example, had Cuban been the Cubs owner last season, I can see him allowing Hendry to bid for Beltran competitively with the Mets regardless of the unresolved Sosa situation. I think had Cuban been owner of the Cubs, we would have pursued Tejada, even if that made Gonzalez a very expensive bench player.
  22. Ouch...not sure I'd want him at 9.5. He'd make an interesting acquisition if he were available though.
  23. With Baldeli locked up, there's rumblings that Gathright could be available. Link I wonder if the Cubs are among those teams interested in Gathright. :-k
