  1. I hope so. I will be greatly amused by the shock and outrage analysts show over the TRAVESTY of a mid-major team from the Horizon League sullying the good name of the tournament by having the audacity to win. I don't mind the fact that the best teams should have an easier time getting to the finals, but I don't understand the fact that there are people who pretty much want to put Kindergarten teams up against them so they'll just waltz into the finals. If that's the case, why even have a tournament? I have no idea what you're talking about. You're not the only one.
  2. I'm not sure if this is sarcastic or not, but with Marshall in the rotation over crappier options like Silva, those games should happen less often. Come on
  3. Are you serious? Compared to what most 20 year old college athletes write that was poetry.
  4. I think he'll have a decent NBA career. If Singler were a Euro people would be drooling over him when the draft rolls around.
  5. That's what I thought they would do also but they're concerned with logistics. The selection show will still be Sunday night so that would leave 40 hours between the announcement of your opponent/location and your game for those playing on Tuesday. I don't know that I can recall a situation like this where everyone in the media and fans almost universally thought it was a terrible idea but basically conceded that it's inevitable. If you can't leave it, just go to 68 and have 4 play-in games for the 12 seeds. I agree with this, even though deciding to give them the 12-seed is kinda arbitrary, and is not really fair to the 5-seeds. But I do like the idea that the last 8 at-large bids play for the last 4 spots. Make the teams that didn't earn their spot into the tourney play for the right to be in it. I'm guessing he meant to say 16 seeds. It makes no sense to have play-in games for anything other than the lowest seeds. No I meant to say 12 seeds. If you're talking about the last 4 at-large seeds, that's about where they should be.

  7. Was hoping it would play out this way. The Vikings select Dan LeFevour, QB from Cincinnati.
  8. George Mason, maybe. It wouldn't have an impact on Butler this year or next year. They shouldn't really be mentioned with George Mason. Butler would have had a bye this year into the 64 anyways. As far as Sweet 16's it all depends on who they give the byes to and how they sort it out with the last 64.
  9. Likely 32 byes, with the other 64 playing for the right to play them. Yeah I get that. I'm wondering who will get the byes and how they'll sort it out with the automatic qualifiers from one-bid leagues. I know nothing is even close to final, just wondering if there have been proposals I've missed.
  10. I'm against it because it's nearly perfect how it is but I'm not as upset about it anymore mainly because I know it's inevitable. Has anyone read any preliminary proposals about how they'll set it up?
  11. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/2010-03-30-ncaa-tournament-expansion_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip Delaney says the jump to 96 is probable.
  12. I think it's a good thing that Iowa jumped on Fran McCaffery when they did. He, Brian Gregory from Dayton and Wojcik from Tulsa were 3 finalists but it sounded like Fran and Gregory were top two. Gregory wouldn't talk until the NIT was over and wanted more money. Seton Hall was ready to offer their job to Fran and possibly St. John's also. He wanted the Iowa job but if they waited around until Friday to speak to Gregory and got turned down, you might be stuck out in the cold. Plus if Tubby leaves he would have had interest in Minnesota (not sure if they would've wanted him) and Katz said tonight that Fran would have been at the top of Boston College's list if he didn't take the Iowa job. Anyways it's the honeymoon phase but I'm getting more and more pumped about him. I think Gottlieb summed it up pretty well on his podcast- Not a sexy hire but he's won everywhere and has inherited a mess in his last two jobs and turned them around. They'll play fast, doesn't think they can win a Big Ten title unless his teams take better shots but that's not what it's about now. Getting better players, playing a more watchable style and get people into Carver. Thinks they'll win and be very competitive but the Big Ten is a bitch.
  13. I didn't follow UCLA that closely but he either had to have been a good recruiter or slightly better coach than he gets credit for. I know it's UCLA but still he wasn't that bad. And yeah it sucks to not have him doing Big Ten games.
  14. You never fail to deliver. Of course it would be helpful to recruit Illinois and it's easiest due to location but it's not an absolute necessity. What if he brings in guys who can recruit Minnesota, KC/STL or Indiana or Michigan or Ohio or get a couple guys from the east coast or Texas or wherever? A couple of the most talented teams in Iowa history weren't built with more than 1-2 Illinois players.
  15. It will all depend on his assistants and how they recruit. It's a major transition from Lick's style to his. He's helped rebuild three programs in the past so that's encouraging. He had 8 and 9 win turnarounds in his first years at UNCG and Siena. At least his style of play will be more enticing to recruits than Lickliter's.
  16. He had more than a decade as an assistant/recruiting coordinator at Notre Dame. That's some history in the midwest. It's not a name that fans will jump on board with right away, but people can't bitch about the style of play anymore. Big Ten fans should like it at least for the variance in style of play. It will be kind of like Mike Anderson coming to the Big 12. A lot has changed in the 11 years since McCaffery was at ND. No school in the Big Ten still has the same coach except for MSU. Countless high schools have had changes in their programs. The AAU circuit has become much more present in recruiting. I think his time at Notre Dame may prove beneficial in some respects, but 11 years is a long time and he is going to have to work very hard to reestablish what relationships he may have had. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Tracy Webster on staff at Iowa next year. True, I wasn't meaning it like he was hyper-connected with the scene today in the midwest. Would Webster leave for Iowa? Van Coleman mentioned him at the beginning of the search as a target for whoever Iowa got. They need someone who is connected and can bring athletes in to run his system. That was Lick's biggest downfall and McCaffery is going to need more high-caliber athletes than the Butler system.

  18. I think I have to at least kind of like someone who is a total [expletive] but gets his players to like him. The one thing you can say about him is that he's not phony which is the case with most high-level college basketball coaches. He has a shady background and he's a total prick. Investigate him but at least he doesn't pretend to be someone else.
  19. Last year Hubert Davis said the Big Ten wouldn't win a single game in the NCAAs. This was after MSU was revealed as a 2 seed. Oh he's bad, I won't argue that. I don't like him but I do love his laugh. Gottlieb can be a douche but I love him as long as he isn't talking about baseball. The best sports talk radio I've ever heard was when I had a drive back from Chicago before the Big Ten Championship that Iowa won in '06. It was him, Katz and Tom Brennan talking about various jobs and coaches for like 3 hours on a Saturday morning. Brennan was standing up for all coaches, Gottlieb was just being brutally honest about which jobs and coaches absolutely sucked and Katz started out diplomatic but then started dishing inside stuff like Gottlieb.
  20. Hubert Davis usually says nothing of any interest but his laugh gets me every time. Overall the biggest strength of ESPN is their college basketball crew.
  21. The Williams one doesn't really matter, but just shows he either wasn't paying attention to what he was talking about or just didn't know what he was talking about. The Sampson thing was out of line. He called Weber out on ESPN and never issued an apology after it was proven that Sampson was a big POS cheater. Real stand up. And if there's one thing we can't tolerate here, it's baseless criticism of Bruce Weber. LOL
  22. That's what everyone says dew. He had a nationally ranked class to La. Tech and was a key to Gillispie's recruiting at A&M. Left there for Tennessee because he thought Billy Clyde went bat spit crazy. He has said he would crawl to Iowa City for the job and today he told reporters it's his dream job. Unfortunately it seems like Barta is going to play it safe and take random mid-major guy because he's scared off by Forbes' lack of experience. Now is exactly the time to take a risk on a guy like Forbes.
  23. Jay Bilas is the [expletive] man. The last few years he's become brutally honest. Bilas is an ACC homer. In 05 he dropped the gem that Deron Williams, the Big 10 preseason POTY, wouldn't be in the top 15 players in the ACC. Yeah spot on jackass. Oh come on. You can find a flaw with any broadcaster over their careers. Especially if he says something negative about your favorite team. He's the best and there's no one really close. He and Herbstreit (and he's said things about Iowa over the years that were inaccurate or pissed me off) are my favorite two tv analysts in sports. Although Gottlieb pisses me off sometimes, I love him too.

  25. That was honestly as late of a call as I've ever seen.
