I’m pretty sure it was mostly muscle he added actually. I’m hesitant to go d line in round 2 like any other premium position. Someone like Gervon Dexter is a hit in the 40’s yet you’re not really moving the needle with a rotational guy who you could just as easily find in free agency every offseason, just more expensive. You can find a day one starter at safety or even linebacker/corner at 57 and 60. -
Assad is another typical high floor, FIP beating soft tossing Cub pitcher who gets shelled vs a team like the Phillies without pin point command. This is a bad stretch of games to have these injuries in the rotation.

PCA would swing at a seagull in the outfield. He’s been brutal.

He has no long term value on the Cubs unless he can develop into a mid 700’s OPS guy with a +glove to supplant Happ in the outfield with a clogged infield.

PCA is an immaculate 0-2 tonight. He hasn’t taken a pitch for a ball in his last 4 at bats (all strike outs) on no more than 4 pitches.

Cubs are elite at advancing exactly one base, and 3 times max usually.

PCA is playing whack a mole in the batters box. It’s excruciating to watch.

PCA is swings at pitches like he’s a goalie blocking pucks.

Conforto has been a pleasant surprise so far. The regulars have been a disappointment but the bench has been more of a strength than a weakness.

Nice clutch hitting guys. Nice pop ups. Thought they got them out of their system in the 11th inning but obviously not.

Taillon throws the most perfectly located slider to punch out Cruz and the next pitch is a fastball right down the middle. horsefeathers this.

Why did DA have Dexter bulk up to line up at nose tackle? Was it to to eat more space to stop the run or simply for pass rushing purposes where his slow first step would be offset by adding more mass? -
It’s nice that they can work counts and draw walks. That’s only effective if they can make solid contact on pitches in the strike zone. Where’s the power at? At least Mo jumped on a couple first pitch mistakes for singles.

Their hot start also predated their march-may splits. They were ice cold in until July 4th of 24 and it transferred over to 2025, scoring at a 5.6 runs/game clip over 126 games and went 96-66 from July 7th of 24-July 6th of 25 at their peak 162 game cherry picked sample size scoring 859 runs to 637 allowed. They’re slumping right now with unsustainably low slugging and eventually they’ll heat back up. Hopefully they in a less volatile manner on a per game basis.

The pathetic slug from a lineup with 6 guys capable of 20+ home run power is unsustainable low. They’ll heat up. if they can maintain a 5 runs/game average with relatively even run distribution on a per game basis they’ll be in good shape. The problem is that it’s not a guarantee which is reflected in their pythag win underperformance since 2023.

I don’t know what’s more worse, 30 baserunners (+2 ghost runners) and only 3 runs scored or 30 baserunners and one XBH. Expect more of of the same until a lineup of 6 guys with 20+ home run power start hitting it over the fence. They’ve been anemic vs non AAAA pitchers.
