Exactly that. There’s no real plan to create a true championship window, just sustained mid 80’s win talent much like the 2000’s whitesox with the hope of pulling a 2005 out of their ass. Unfortunately ownership is content with this so I’m not sure you’ll find much of an upgrade until their philosophy changes as an organization.

His best work has been acquiring young controlled talent through trades like Palencia, PCA, Brown and Busch. He’s in a tough spot where he only has access to a fringe top 10 payroll without permission to exceed the LT and doesn’t have the small market perks of being awarded extra draft picks so this is the expected result. But any development from Shaw has been stalled with the Bregman contract. Instead of Cease he has $400+ million owed to 3 aging middle infielders. So if Bregman doesn’t start playing to the back of his baseball card, which is assuming a lot at age 32 then that’s a serious failure from the team’s projection models and you’re left with your top infield prospect/1st round pick blocked from his natural position. If this team wants to replenish their farm system then trading Ben Brown in the offseason, no matter how counterintuitive can bring in a haul of prospects if he keeps this up. I can’t say I’m confident in Swanson and Bregman playing at a high level for the remainder of their deals.

Cubs have finished 50-42 on the dot after the 70 game mark 3 years in a row. 86-76 seems right.

PCA has a 130 wRC+ vs left handed pitching and Busch has a 118. If only they could combine that with their right handed platoon splits from 2025.

I’m sick and tired of seeing these same faces every year going through their typical 2 month losing benders of horsefeathers hitting and scoring 3 runs max 4+ times/week. Need 3 runs score 2, need 2 runs score 1, need 6 runs score 1, need 2 runs score 15 in an August game where you’re 5 back of a playoff seed. Although lately they don’t even have the sexy run differential during a stretch of games that’s a gift to a team that’s in disarray.

Some mental math here, at Coors The Rockies were allowing an average of 7.8 runs/game going into to Tuesday and against the Cubs they’re allowing an average of 6.5 hits/game. I’m so proud of them. What a team.

It makes no sense that they’ve been this bad for this long with a completely healthy lineup.

It’s not just that they’re losing, it’s not just that they’re 2-5 vs the A’s, Giants and Rockies, it’s the fact that they’re -20 in the run differential column against these bad teams which makes it so much worse. At least they lost on the margins against a tough schedule in that May-June skid of 2024.

You could trade him. It’d require swapping him with another high contract with similar production if you they need a shortstop and have an underperforming pitcher with a few years remaining on his contract. A slightly less washed up Aaron Nola maybe.

Yeah, He also had an 81 wRC+ by mid June of 2024 too. He’s always had a fickle bat. Unless there’s a failure to adjust to a career high in breaking pitches seen or an age cliff then it’s just Dansby being Dansby.

Especially after locking up Nico when you already have a solid and cheap middle infield option in Shaw. Bregman was a nice luxury signing on paper but he’s been mostly a failure. He’s usually good for going 1/4 with a single or 1/4 with a BB on a good day.
