I know. The fact that we’re void of pitching talent thanks to being decimated with injuries while hoping we’d beat out those fucks for first place 4 months ago to not even score board watching anymore is depressing.

I don’t see how the pitching holds up without a number of trades due to a lack of reinforcements from injuries. They have a -.5 fWAR during this 6-1 stretch thanks to the offense scoring 9/game.

They’re 13 arms short basically. The Cubs have a had bad pitching staffs before but none this bad on a team with playoff aspirations.

I’ll give Jed this, you could be stuck paying for high $ vets on the backend of their deals with limited financial flexibility and diminishing returns after the window closes like the Padres and clock is ticking for Philly too. Machado, Boggarts and Tatis look like complete duds. Although the Dodgers have pulverized the competitive balance of baseball to be fair but the Cubs will have over $100 million to spend and only the corner outfielders will be missed. You can criticize the timing of his free agent signings but that’s for another topic.

Is Jed’s aversion to paying top dollar for a starting pitcher on a long terms deal a matter of fear of attrition or is the lack of quality arms in the farm system hand cuffing him financially to make a big splash signing? He’d have to focus on a quantity of high floor vets on safe deals to supplement the ML roster if it’s not simply cowardice. And of course the reverse Coors effect that the Cubs defense has on the pitching ranking 29th in war and 17th in ERA. Ben Brown and Cade Horton have xFIPs and xERAs well over a run higher than their true numbers and I’m assuming their ability to minimize home runs and induce enough soft contact to reap the benefits of the great defense makes this relatively sustainable? (In a world where Cade isn’t on the 1.5 year IL and Sox fan pope Bob isn’t using the power of God to injure Cubs pitchers). -
Throw in those 6 errors and it’s a wash.
