  1. Nico fits into this at a 13.5 projected war when his deal starts. So it’s based on a projection model then. Okay. So Nico was underpaid relative to Alonso, which may it not have been a hometown discount or uncertainty over a looming lockout while entering free agency. That’s the closest 1:1 comparison we have for 2 opposite players who project equivalent production. Add Kyle Schwarber too. I’m curious if he’d get maybe 8/$240 if he hit free agency after 2023 with his 2024-25 production matching ZIPS projections, plus the additional 6 year regression model through 2031. He’s alone as a top 20 position player from a war standpoint over a 4 and likely 5 year span with single digit home run rower.
  2. Nico is 18th in fWAR since 2022 at 17.4, Alonso lags way behind at 12.2 fWAR while 2 years older. The bias remarkable. Bellinger 6/$162, 3/$126 for Bichette who hasn’t posted an fWAR over 4 since 2022…. . I’m sure they project their bats to age well and there’s a win probability component, more direct contributions to scoring, more consistent run sequencing potential with a top heavy lineup? 6/$141 for the leagues best baseman since 2022 is quite low. Swap Swansons and Nico’s power numbers with the same efficiency and Nico is a lot more expensive.
  3. Just one and preferably Suzuki. I don’t want to be on the hook for 30+ YO outfielders for another 4 years at those prices, and you’ve locked up a core still lacking any front line talent. If Shaw is a disaster at the plate then that complicates things a bit. But if Shaw is okay but only as a solid infield bat then I’d explore trade options for starting pitching or corner outfield help.
  4. What a strange time to bring in a lefty. Why not just walk Happ to get to PCA?
  5. Same reason James wood is leading off the Nationals. More at bats for your best hitters. That’s the logic.
  6. .7 of Busch’s 3.5 wins last year were compiled in both of Mikolas’s starts against the Cubs.
  7. Bichette got 3/$126 with an opt out after the season, mainly for his offensive ceiling. You might not like the length of the deal but in no way is this an overpay. A decade ago, sure.
  8. Because more times on base means more run scoring opportunities. The hitter who goes 4/4 with 4 singles would have a slightly higher wOBA than the hitter who goes 2/4 with a home run and a double despite the same OPS. Intuitively it makes sense from a team success standpoint. It’s similar to passer rating vs ANY/A in football.
  9. Despite PCAs OPS being nearly 30 points higher. That’s one of the biggest gaps in wOBA to OPS I’ve ever seen. Nico’s wOBA was actually 1 point higher too.
  10. I’m not optimistic or pessimistic. I don’t know horsefeathers. That’s why I come here to ask questions. All I see is a an infielder who sits in the 60 of most prospect rankings and that’s the extent of my knowledge. I prefer this over reading twitter posts projecting a 2030 cubs lineup of long, ballesteros, Shaw, Rojas, Alcantara, PCA Busch and some random second baseman.
  11. Do they trade Rojas or is he Swanson’s contingency plan? Do they trade Shaw or audition him in the outfield and slide Nico over to SS and put him at second base when Swanson walks?
  12. Correct. If this means they go out and sign Skubal next winter, (I doubt it), package Shaw and or Rojas who’ll be blocked until 2030 for a corner outfield bat, or believe Shaw can develop into a 4 war outfielder, great.
  13. What does having 3 early-mid 30’s infielders under contract in 2029, the teams highest paid players ATM, say about their faith in Shaw/Rojas and by extension their player development?
  14. I can’t believe they’ve scored 4 runs with weak ass contact all game. They haven’t barreled anything.
  15. It’s a miracle they even have 3 runs with so much weak contact.
  16. Which horsefeathers end of the Kingery, Conforto and Carlson twig stinks the least?
  17. Cassie would’ve spent opening day in Iowa along with Alcantara where he isn’t blocked and rotting on the bench. Shaw learning how to play the outfield is a practical way to maximize his plate appearances. I don’t think they’re throwing darts at a board
  18. Correct. If he ever does figure it out then it’s a good bet it’ll happen before he turns 30.
  19. Every right handed in house platoon option at 1st base is a reverse split guy outside of Kelly. Has Kelly taken reps at 1st base?
