    Steamer and Fangraphs are very conservative with projections. Nico’s had a 4.4 fWAR average since 22 and he’s projected to post a 3.5, Busch 2.4 and 2, down from 3.5, Horton 1.3 down from 2.2 with more projected innings. Is this the correct interpretation?

    Bears would save $16 million by trading Jaylon Johnson after June 1st. Unfortunately it makes the defense worse. I trust the coaching staff to evaluate talent in the draft more than years past.

    What non superbowl contenders with projected picks in the teens will trade for Crosby? Parsons, Ramsey, Stafford, Hill etc All netted picks in the 20’s. The order won’t be a problem unless of course the Browns or Jets offer first rounders.

    If you’re going to target anyone I’d go after Trey Hendrickson who’d cost no draft capital, just $ the Bears don’t have. Bears would save about $12 million trading DJ after June first.

    It’s quite comical seeing Carolina lose back to back to games to pro bowl quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield that the panthers cut so that they could upgrade at qb with Bryce Young for a fee.

    The Nationals swapped Harper with Soto so I wouldn’t say they lacked star power. That’s not including Scherzer, Strasburg, Turner, Rendon and Zimmerman. The 2015 Royals are the last team that comes to mind that didn’t feature any real star talent. Outside of the 2023 Rangers who still rode the bat of their $300 million World Series MVP Corey Seager, catching lightening in a bottle with a bunch of scrappy guys like the 2005 whitesox or 2015 Royals is rare and will always remain that way.

    They haven’t drafted a defender in round 1 since 2018 who’s no longer a Bear. The lineman they’ve drafted have been round 2 and 3 tackles where it’s hard to find dudes past the first round, Booker is the only edge they’ve drafted. They had 2 choices coming into the season which was Booker Billings and Dexter or paying a premium for low end d line starters because none are on the roster. Spending money doesn’t always mean good. Like Woodstock 99 either you pay $10 for a water bottle or drink out of a water fountain contaminated with the equivalent of plumbing sewage.

    I get your overall point. I’m going on a tangent about the philosophical differences between Jed and Theo. Tom not allowing deferrals likely plays a role too.

    Sure, but if it came down to Darvish not being offered the years he wanted then what likely ends up Happening with Jed is he offers Darvish less $, negotiations stall by creating an unnecessary bidding war and another team poaches him because Jed would never spend more than $1 above the second highest bid for the sake of “efficient spending”. Craig Kimbrel also comes to mind. Devin Williams preference was the Cubs too, much like Heyward and of course he’s short on years. I think it’s more than just spending more $ than needed. And then if the Rickets don’t allow deferrals it’s impossible to write someone a blank check,

    Cubs can afford a number of free agents. Theo was willing to actually sign them unlike Jed.

    I’m surprised the Pirates or A’s GMs don’t use Jed’s tactic. “Reach out to us if your client gets half the years and $ he’s looking for”.

    Darvish certainly wasn’t as high profile as Lester. If Swanson and Darvish were similar that means that the market wasn’t wasn’t competitive for Darvish is either which is what I wanted him to clarify. Bichette is only 27 too and if Nico walks at the end of the year he’s your long term answer. Yes. Jed’s MO is “if you can’t get the years or $ you want check back in with me”. That happened with Bregman and of course he was $5 million short and wouldn’t offer a player option, costing them roughly 3 wins. What’s frustrating is the Cubs have a solid foundation of complimentary players. A team serious about competing walks away with Tucker, Bichette and trades Shaw for a starting pitcher. No need to to spend $25 million/year on Boyd and Rae either when Fried was available last offseason. A strong back end rotation helps you win regular season games when all 5 starters are used.

    How are Swanson and Darvish similar? Are you saying that the Cubs didn’t pay a bidding war tax for either? Darvish was the consensus top free agent from his class and the most expensive, albeit in a very weak one. Theo handed out 3 9 figure deals in addition to Kimbrel, Zobrist and Lackey. Swanson and Bellinger at a discount are Jed’s “big” free agent splashes. Theo was always in the mix.

    Darvish was the consensus top free agent of the 2017-2018 class and was the highest paid too, albeit in a weak free agent class.

    Bluejays Dodgers or Yankees will be lucky to have him.

    Nico has gotten away with that his entire career. It’s like he’s able to aim his hits through infield gaps especially on slower breaking pitches.

    He couldn’t catch up to fastballs. He struggled all year with it too, It’s something he has to work on.

    It bodes that they’ll have 6 months of a refined Shaw as opposed to 2 months of below replacement play from Berti/Brujan etc That’s at least an extra 2 wins netted. But it was a little concerning how outmatched he looked vs playoff pitching.

    Out of curiosity where do you see Shaw in the future in terms of war and offensive production? He reminds me a bit of Addison Russel as a baseball player.

    If this teams signs, Bichette and Tucker then I’d seek out the Tigers for Skubal and Shaw of course would be one of the key pieces in that trade. That won’t happen unfortunately. My Valdez/Milton Bradley reply from yesterday was also a joke for the record.

    That’s why I edited my reply. Obviously you received the initial one. I was goofing on him and realized I didn’t convey that well. I don’t think the Marlins have anyone to add make it a fair trade. A utility infielder who was an average hitter in the minor leagues+Alcantara is just as lopsided in my opinion.

    Reds locked up the 6th wild card spot with 83 wins. They want 86-88 wins at the lowest possible cost. I need proof they have more than 86 win ambitions by spending more money. Mathew Boyd Shota and Cody bellinger, who they gave away to the Yankees to dump salary have been their 2 big free agent splashes since 23-25 in terms of AAV.

    That’s a steal for the marlins and a bad trade for the Cubs. Shaw is good for at least 3-4 wins next year with 6 years of team control.

    So just one year contracts, pre arb young guys and Dansby Swanson are permissible?

    So a 3 year contact with a 1 year player opt out makes all the sense in the world then.
