He’s thrown 14 pitches in the last 8 days coming into last night. He’d be just fine. Vs the Cardinals middle of the order, it’s my opinion that Palencia is the better option there. It doesn’t mean that the Cubs lost because of that decision, it’s just an alternative to trotting out Maton who’s been bad for your best relief pitcher who’s covered in cob webs from lack of use and meaningful innings.

The Cubs. Palencia came in down 1-0 in the 8th inning Vs Texas. His last appearance was in the 7th inning down 12-1 vs Pittsburgh on Tuesday. So using him to hold a 1 run deficit on 3 days of rest with 1 save opportunity in the last 3 weeks isn’t exactly a bold strategy.

Correct. Our best reliever is mostly used in low leverage spots during blowouts to prevent rust.

Palencia. He’s rarely been used since his injury with the lack of save opportunities. I understand the bind that Counsell is in and the win probability aspect of being down by a run in the 8th inning, but the rotation is so bad that at some point I’d like him to be more aggressive when There’s a chance to hold a 1 run deficit. Looking ahead to Sunday with Wicks on the mound is assuming the Cubs will actually have a lead in the 9th inning in a tight game. He’s terrible and that’s a bad assumption.,

That’s just it, they can’t even tread water with the injuries to the pitching staff. How much ground they can afford to lose? We’re also without a 2025 Boyd or 24 Imanaga exceeding projections, Taillon is done, Imanaga is a liability,, Wicks would be in Iowa and Taillon would be DFAd if the rotation was at expected health. There’s no margin for error with the offense scoring a run/game less at the 58 game mark from last season.

Only 22 times they’ve held a team to 3 runs or less and only 14 times in their last 44 games. Maybe they’d tread water a year ago when the offense was scoring at a 5.8 run/game clip from last season but not at 4.8.

One obstacle is whether they’d even want Shaw with young middle infield talent like McGonigle, Colt Keith and their 46th ranked SS prospect.

If it’s for Matt Shaw who rides the bench, because there’s no position for him to play, because $410 million is owed to 3 middle infielders who aren’t getting any younger, then why not? Why are you content with a wild card and likely a quick playoff exit? Is it worth keeping Shaw around when the best pitcher in baseball is available? It’s certainly possible they’ll demand more and something to consider but we’re talking about Skubal. If he’s a Dodger, Brave, or Brewer then you can stick a fork in any shot at a world series this season.

To acquire Skubal it’s between Shaw+ or Wiggins+ a lot more capital. Not sure it’d be worth it or even enough when the other suitors have better farm systems and prospects to offer. Skubal for a 10th man who’s blocked in the infield and doesn’t have a corner outfield bat I’m in favor of. It depends on how the next couple months and market shake out obviously. The only obstacle is the Tigers need for young middle infield talent.

Would Shaw get it done? This is the year to do it for a variety of reasons and especially with the threat of him joining another NL contender. No matter how costly he is he’s the only available player at the deadline that’ll significantly move the needle. An over pay should be considered in my opinion. Wouldn’t being a rental cost less than someone with control in Joe Ryan’s tier?

This was a makeup for the Sunday loss vs Houston where the Cubs lost 8-5 with an xWOBA of 398 vs Houston’s 276. Seemed like the Cubs were on the receiving end of batted ball luck last night. I’ll take a 7-2 win in a Rea vs Skenes matchup either way.
