  1. Just remember, these are the worst economic times sine the great depression!!!!!
  2. Arkansas has a history of refusing to play Arkansas State in any sport. In 1987, the NIT put the two schools against each other. Nolan Richardson was in his second year. The Hogs were getting blown out at half time and Broyles had decided that if they didn't come back and win Nolan would be fired. Lucky for the hogs they came back and won. A few years back, the WNIT put the two schools together and played the game in Jonesboro. It sold out in minutes --- something a womens game had never done around these parts. I definitely like those early matchups. . . . the NIT isn't always terrible.
  3. He'd probably leave it and sign for 45M more and an actual milkshake. and he'd be getting hosed! You can't eat a regular milk shake with a giant plastic spoon!!!!
  4. I remember when Peter Gammons predicted that Bobby Crosby would win the AL MVP. Ha!
  5. Screw manny and the horse (agent) he rode into town on. I'd offer him twenty bucks and a coupon for a free Wendy's frosty. Take it or leave it.
  6. come on folks, his name was "RonDL White"
  7. Is that game 1 or game 2 of the '03 WS?
  8. 87-88 mph is pretty dang impressive for a fat 38 year old guy.
  9. Is it my imagination or has Jim steered clear of the donuts recently?
  10. If you wanna get down, get down on the ground -- COCAINE!!!!! I'm with you with Leon. I was not happy about Grace taking over for a power hitting left handed stud like Leon Durham.
  11. You know, on second thought, maybe it is abnormal. Sosa was rumored to have fudged on his age. . . . . .who the heck knows?
  12. I think Sosa was on something, but I also do not think it's abnormal to have your peak years from age 29-32 which is what Sosa did. Following 2002, Sosa's performance got worse. Could it be that he was coming off the junk? It's possible.
  13. I think this year's team has fewer question marks than last year's. We just have the advantage of knowing how things turned out last year. There are legit concerns with the team, but I feel like every team in the central (and most in the entire NL) would gladly trade places with us for the upcoming season.
  14. I always wished injury and other bad things on him. He never was worth a crap, either. I'd much rather have had an aging Jody Jody Davis than a young POS Dingle Berryhill. Remember when this guy was gong to force Sandberg to SS or 3B? http://www.baseball-reference.com/bpv/images/5/58/TyGriffin.jpg
  15. And don't forget about the signing of a top-notch closer, Dave Smith. No doubt. How could forget these awesome signings in the years to follow: 1992: Kal Daniels!!!! 1993: Candy Maldanado!!!!!!! 1994: Willie Wilson!!!!! 1995: Howard Johnson. I always got cracked up at Harry calling him "HoJo Johnson." I always assumed the name "hojo" took care of the last name as well as the first, but apparently Harry didn't get the memo. Some of you guys just don't know how brutal it could be being a fan in the 80s and 90s. You got so used to the losing that you considered it a GREAT day when Sandberg or Dawson hit a homer. Outside of April - June, you really didn't care if they won or lost.
  16. For all the "old" people like me. .. . Ryno had a pretty sexy stache in '87. I know why he had it. Do you? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/bhogg/sandberg_moustache_640_03.jpg More serious: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/ryne-sandberg-1.jpg The Sandberg game -- June 23, 1984 1984 MVP First play off appearance since '45 The week I made my first trip to Wrigley -- August 8-9, 1989. Ryno homered in 5 straight and was the NL Player of the week! (the proof is on the back of this card!) http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LSnRtZhXnIU/SSjkPziVzXI/AAAAAAAAAh0/xU3UaCRdabw/s400/90sandberg1.jpg http://i.cnn.net/si/si_online/covers/images/1987/0720_large.jpg http://www.checkoutmycards.com/CardImages/Cards/058/871/08F.jpg Seriously -- 1991 is THE YEAR. Bell, Dawson, AND Sandberg!!! Oh, and Grace. Danny Jackson in the rotation! Walton, Dwith Smith. . . .Maddux, Sutcliffe. . . . . Yep, 1991 is THE YEAR!!!! http://www.arcollectibles.com/harry2.gif http://www.fansedge.com/Images/Product/33-11/33-11648-F.jpg The Boys of Zimmer. They had no business winning 70 games, much less the 93 they actually did win. They had the lowest pay roll in the NL (around 11 or 12 million). That entire regular season was the definition of a "magic year." The play off stunk, but it was truly a fun ride. http://images.bleedcubbieblue.com/images/admin/jodydavis.jpg .271 / 24 hr / 84 RBI in '83 and a top 10 MVP finish in 1984 http://i.cdn.turner.com/sivault/multimedia/photo_gallery/0804/mlb.best.baseball.players.numbers.23-46/images/46.lee-smith.jpg unstoppable unless he hung the slider. .. .
  17. I wish something could be done to spruce up the grays. They just seem a little boring. I guess every team has boring road unis, though. I'm still waiting on the 80's pullovers to make a comeback. . . . .same thing for stirrup socks.
  18. I read the title as "Mr. Bush is still a drunken mess" and thought this was about the former president :)
  19. When Lou leaves, I really hope Trammell gets the gig. I'm the biggest Sandberg fan you'll find, but I don't want him managing the club. One, I'm not sure he'd be good at it --- this isn't 1989 and the game has changed a lot. Two, there would come a time that cub fans despise him and call for his job. . . bash him . . .generally treat him like crap. That would be sad to go through.
  20. Remember that time in early 2008? That time when we prayed we'd be good enough to beat out the Brewers? The time we assumed that the NL East would produce the Wild Card because the NLC was so terrible? The time that we assumed Fukudome was an easy .800 OPS? I certainly understand the disgruntledness on some of the moves, but I really think the roster is better than last year's. If nothing else, we could all probably agree that this cub team is the clear favorite in the central. That's not such a bad thing.
  21. I loved watching the Royals back in the 80s. . . . would love for them to regain some of their earlier success.
  22. I'd sign Hinske because he's a Razorback. Just another reason I'm not a major league GM.
  23. By stats only -- no doubt he's a HoF'er. I wonder if he has the "wow" factor that some players have. His attitude probably won't help him out. So does he deserve it? I say "yes." Will he get in? I really don't know. As for comparing him to Sandberg --- I think they were different players. Sandberg was a top of the order hitter. Sandberg was a complete player --- hitting, base running / speed, and defense. Kent was a middle of the order guy who wasn't all that flashy with the glove and to my knowledge was no more than average (if that ) on the bases. Both did what their teams asked of them and then some. I don't think you can go wrong with having either guy as your 2b and I'm REALLY biased towards Ryno. . . . . and I can't stand Jeff Kent.
