  1. Well, it's not his fault. It is absolutely stupid to have a pool of players that is Julio Lugo, Cesar Izturis, and Jacque Jones, and getting to choose two of those EVER choose Cesar Izturis. If they want Lugo, put him at short, Jacque in center, and Cesar can be your horribly overpriced 25th man. Live and learn guys, don't trade future Hall Of Famers for Arthritic Pieces Of Crap.
  2. Unless we're choosing on 2004 stats, Jacque Jones please.
  3. How about Cesar, Dempster, and cash for Hall and Clark, and we pay all the saleries for 2007. Which would put us at taking on about $13 million total in payroll (Clark and Halls salaries plus the $9 million we'd send to Milkwaukee) Seems like a fair "posting fee" for a near .900 OPS shortstop. In this scenario, put Jacque in center, Clark would be our 4th outfielder and potential platoon partner for Jacque, seeing as he put up an .884 OPS against lefties in '05. Just have to see if he bounces back. Leaves us still with a ton for pitching since only $4 million or so is really "new" payroll. Brewers would instantly either get a setup man/closer or the fourth guy in their rotation. They save $4 million and could jump into the free agent market. Of course, you really have to sell the "Cesar was hurt, he's better now, look at his '04" angle to make this happen.
  4. I think the discussion for Hall would begin with Rich Hill, so no thanks.
  5. In case someone is left still capable of coherent sentences, I dug up this contact info for the radio station. Could probably just call them and ask if they made this report or not.
  6. If it's one year of maddux versus four of meche, give me Maddux.
  7. Reason? None. Matts line against righties last year, .780 OPS, is good enough going forward, with him likely to improve. Need? Perhaps. If Jacque Jones is still on your roster, and RF (Soriano) and CF (Lugo?) are taken, you can't ignore his .886 line against righties last year. That would be insane to do so. Combined, they would give you a near .900 OPS out of left field, which would rank pretty damn high in the league. However, i'd rather put Lugo at short, Jacque in center, and let Matt start.
  8. And in all geographic fairness, 4/60 beats 3/45. :D
  9. Still, 3/45 will be tough to pass up. If I'm Gangsta Jimbo, I might even add a 15 mil fourth year team option with a $3 million buyout, which would vest with a combined 650 innings throughout the contract.
  10. If this were the plan, I'd prefer to hang onto Jacque into spring training just in case Pie turns out to really not be ready. We'd have to keep an insurance policy. Or else you'll wind up losing production versus Jacque and Arthritic Piece Of Crap, which is hard to believe!
  11. 3/45? He's got to take it. I'm going to say it again. How on earth did Hendry go from "slumping Neifi" to "Jordan in the 4th"? Has to be MacPhail...
  12. I think I've officially changed my mind on Jacque and want to keep him around to play center. Bruce says we aren't getting Drew, so it's either Jacque, Matthews, or trade for Wells. 2006 OPS Jacque - 833 Matthews - 866 Wells - 899 The difference isn't worth it when you consider a) there's no proof that Matthews or Wells will replicate that, b) Jacque only costs us 2/9 at this point, and c) you can easily get the CF production up to the high 800's if you platoon him. Jonny Gomes of the Devil Rays. So far in his big league career, he's put up a .946 OPS against lefties. .764 against righties. So not good, but not worthless off the bench, a .446 slugging percentage. What do you think the Devil Rays would ask for in return?
  13. So, it's CF or bust and it's not Drew. Fair enough. If the decision is Jacque Jones or the other alternatives (Matthews Jr, etc.), I take Jacque and figure out a platoon. Not sure who that is. Are we nuts enough to entertain the thought of putting Soriano in center against lefties, and get a lefty killer for the bench to play right?
  14. Fixed. Haha, point conceded. It will be interesting if he'll take the role. They better not promise him a full platoon in left field. But if it came down to $2 million to start for the Royals or $5 million to sit on our bench, wonder what he'll take.
  15. Who would you prefer as your 4th outfielder/pinch hitter extroidinare, Freddy Bynum or Cliff Floyd?
  16. Burnitz would almost (key word, almost) be a more attractive "bench" option than Floyd just because he wouldn't be likely to take a ton of at bats from Murton. I could see Matts at bats against righties being scarce with Floyd around.
  17. If this were pre-Soriano, I'd agree with you. But at this point, I don't see Hendry being outbid for someone he really wants. Nothing will surprise me going forward. Roger Clemens would not surprise me.
  18. Our allotment of A&B's is six I believe, five plus the number of A&B's we'll lose, which is one (Pierre). Aram doesn't count. So, as of now, we have four we can still use. Sorry, no links to back that up, gleened from the recent Soriano thread and Aram threads. Pretty sure it's accurate though. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Anyway, on topic, Schmidt, wow. Uncle Lou was right when he said that Hendry was going crazy gobbling up players. How in the hell did he go from "Slumping Neifi" to "Jordan in the 4th quarter" so quickly? MacPhail?
  19. How would Soriano's money have bought Drew and a pitcher? All accounts have Drew wanting near what Soriano got (3/45 has been floated, I believe). While far fewer years, that's just a few million less per year than Soriano. No way you get anything worth getting pitching wise for that. It might be truthful to say you could have gotten Drew and Jason Marquis for the same per year. Of course, why not just get Drew too. I don't see the club even mentioning the word "payroll", so the sky may be the limit. 130 to 140 isn't out of the question.
  20. Right now we need to sign Drew for center, so that we can create inflated value in Jacque Jones. Once Drew signs, that's it for rea power hitting outfielders on the market. There's Bonds who is utterly complicated. There's Carlos Lee who will be a DH before he knows it. There's Moises who is about to sign with the Mets. After that it's the also rans of Matthews Jr., Luis Gonzalez, etc. If 2007 and 2008 Moises Alou are worth $8 million per year in this market, 2/12 of Jacque Jones is a freaking steal.
  21. I think you're right Vance. Something had to have happened. Hendry can't just go from slumping Neifi to Jordan in the 4th quarter overnight for no reason.
  22. Worst case scenario, if we went into the season today, our lineup might be Soriano DeRosa Lee Ramirez Jones Barrett Murton Izturis Pitcher and our rotation might be Zambrano Hill Miller Marshall/Mateo/Marmol/etc. Prior So, already, I feel we're competitive. Obviously that pitching rotation is getting an overhaul in the next weeks so it's a moot point. While I may loathe the contract by the end of it, it isn't going to hurt us at all. By the time we get into the real gut renching portion of the deal, the contract will be own by Mark Cuban or some other rich dude, and they're not going to think about it twice.
  23. Only if Murton can handle center to platoon with Jones. In that scenario he'd get a good 35 starts in center and obviously a good 40 in left for Barry. Add in spelling Soriano for ten games or so and that's a lot of playing time.
  24. Why not both? Drew in center, Murton in left, Soriano in right, Jacque as super-sub and insurance if anyone gets hurt. So, you know, extra time in center.
  25. Wow. We signed Soriano. I have this feeling that in five years, i'm going to be drinking to this contract feeling sad. But right now, I think I'm going to burn one in honor of it, heh. We may not like this contract by the end of it, but it makes us a better team moving forward. And it's a good idea to backload the contract if the Tribune couldn't care less because, as has been noted, they won't own this contract in five years time. You just know the next owner will be some rich guy, so don't even worry about it. Get Drew now. I hope the 3/45 rumor is true. Soriano in right, Drew in center, Murton in left, Jacque as either the super-sub (25 starts in left, 25 in center, 10 or so in right) or trade bait. Get pitching. Sign Lugo. Trade Arthritic Piece Of Crap. Wash, rinse, repeat.
