It should help PCA that he's a LHB and won't be chasing so many tough breaking calls low and away. I do notice that PCA seems to lay off more balls that are up or outside. He chases a lot of pitches low or inside since those are the pitches he likes to hit (can't argue with the results). Of course we've also seen him swing at a couple of sliders that end up hitting him on the leg LOL.

Maybe that plus maybe some natural age- related velo drop. Not throwing much last year might have an effect also. Bottom line is he just didn't look good.

Can't win em all. At least they made it a close game, better than being blown out lol. Rea also didn't look good at times, lost command etc, everyone has an off game here and there, he was bound to regress somewhat eventually. Shaw still looks pretty stiff out there at 3b at times. Hopefully he'll look at least a bit better once he gets more reps in the MLB and can start to relax instead of worrying about proving himself at 3b. When he hit that last double he showed off his speed, he's pretty fast. -

You wonder if they may eventually do something with Merryweather. He's been bad, and he's not getting whiffs or chase (down dramatically since 2023). If he can just be an average reliever that's fine, but is he even capable of that? Problem is it looks like he's out of options.

I was thinking about this too. For a guy with projected 50 hit & 50 power graded tools and poor plate discipline, what he's been doing offensively since about the All-star break last year is incredible. If this is who he really is I don't think anyone could have predicted it. He has a chance to turn into the best Cubs player since Sosa and a top 5-10 player in the MLB if he keeps it up, His talent level is unbelievable. The question is how much his chase issues will cause him problems as pitchers adjust. They held back Javy.

In May, Justin Turner is hitting 109 wRC+ with .280 AVG and .367 OBP (30 PA). Carson Kelly with a 80 wRC+ and Amaya is 153 in May Shaw hitting .455 AVG with 727 SLG and 242 wRC+ since recalled (12 PA).

PCA and Tucker are tied in HR, runs, SB, and have a difference of .001 in AVG and SLG.

This evolves throughout the season in the pen, we can discuss here. -------------------------------- I'd say right now the circle is something like: Keller, Palencia, Thielbar, Pomeranz, Hodge (when healthy, even with inconsistency) Outside the circle = Merryweather, Roberts, Pressly (on the bubble), Flexen (bubble) Surprised to see Pomeranz and Flexen haven't given up a run this season yet. All the guys in the circle above (minus Hodge) have ERA's and FIP's under 3.

Lesson learned: don't criticize Golden Boy. I got the same grief on PSD forum when I ragged on Baez and Conteras for not running out plays that dropped in during a freaking playoff game that they lost. Same grief ragging on Baez when he admitted to "using the game to warm up" during 2018. Same grief for ragging on Maddon when he didn't hold any of them accountable even after Theo criticized Maddon for the exact same & eventually canned him for it. These types of players are emotional so I get it but you still gotta run it out when it counts. I'm also sure Counsell has likely mentioned it to him. Done commenting on it. You either get it or you don't.

He didn't run out of the box, it's on video. Twitchy 23 year olds with energy for days running out their groundballs in a tie game with a day off tomorrow is now "get off my lawn"? It's called winning. Normally PCA is all-in on effort so I applaud him for that usually. But I've seen him start to do this this season and it's cost him 2 or 3 bases already. If the Cubs are up 6 it's not a big deal.

PCA should have beat out that bobbled grounder, would have if he ran out of the box. He's too young and fast to not be running balls out. This isn't the first time lately he's done that either. Somebody teach these kids how to play ball FFS.

Agree. With this lineup there's really no reason to do the egregious sends with 2 outs. Especially with a lame Marlins pitcher on the mound.

Shaw looks much better so far, he's attacking and driving the ball like we've seen in his minor league highlights. Let's hope he stays and has a solid season. What kinda sucks is Bregman has 2.4 WAR. We'd be up like 3 wins (in theory) if we landed him.
