  1. Because they actually value those kinds of relievers.
  2. There's literally nothing "draconian" about offering any MLB player any contract whatsoever. All contracts are signed voluntary by the player and they all have the right to say no if they want, like PCA did here. Cubs could have offered PCA an uber-cheap contract worth 20m over 8 years and who cares? He's a grown adult with an agent and can say no. It's just business, and both FO and player have every right to make contract decisions in each of their own best interests. PCA would never ever sign a 20m over 8 years extension but i would absolutely love it if he did because it means the team I follow is more likely to win more games over that span. The exact same reason why I'd love it if Ricketts would spend 500m on payroll every year. I literally couldn't care less what money Ricketts or any player takes home. The only thing I care about are my own interests as a fan/consumer, which is having a product (team) that's as good as possible and paying the least possible amount for it. Why anyone licks cleats and takes sides when millionaires and billionaires squabble over how they spend all the money we fork over to them is beyond me.
  3. Jed definitely hasn't been perfect, but in order to win you basically either need good prospects turning into good cheap MLB players (or trade for good MLB players) and/or enough payroll to buy good players in FA. Nico, Steele, and Morel isn't enough pre-arb players, and Cubs tax payrolls each year since 2021 have been ranked 15th, 12th, 10th, 9th, and now 12th in 2025. Even the best FO's would have a tough time sneaking into a wild card spot under those conditions IMO. I think if Jed had spent wiser on his 1-2 year type deals we could have maybe hit 86 wins the last 2 seasons instead of 83 wins, but it's hard to have seen a path to 90 wins unless the budget was expanded or they traded most of their good prospects they've acquired since Darvish.
  4. Cam Smith has been doing better (not trying to start a fight here LOL, just interesting to look at). Savant says he has some good peripherals in some key places. Very good raw power and chase (so far), surprisingly good sprint speed, whiffs are below average so far but not terrible. To compare sprint speed, PCA and Corbin Carroll have only been a touch faster at 29.4 ft/s this year so far.
  5. I didn't realize Mervis ran slower than both our current catchers.
  6. They don't deserve to be in anyone's top 5. That doesn't mean they're bad. Lots of resources leading to .500 teams that miss the playoffs every year isn't something people will jump to admire when orgs like the Brewers, Dodgers, Rays, Phillies, Braves etc are out there. I think Hoyer inheriting a weak farm system from Theo-era and a cheap owner (unwilling to either tank or spend) has been a tough hole to climb out of.
  7. From what i've seen he's a bit overrated in RF. His range seems below average, maybe average at best. His running speed is rated below average and he doesn't seem to go back on the ball that well. His hands seem fine.
  8. Shaw sucks right now and has been atrocious vs RHP (.339 OPS), let him get his timing and confidence etc back in Iowa then bring him back up when he's swinging well. Try Berti/Workman/Turner etc at 3B, they can't do any worse. Shaw isn't PCA, he doesn't provide value if he's hitting badly.
  9. PCA went from hitting .197 to .257 over the last 2 games of back to back 3-for-4 nights. 113 wRC+
  10. Problem is he needs time to get in games and build up. He's so behind. Shades of Kimbrel. They should have signed him in early Feb. This org is so cheap JFC, they do this to themselves.
  11. The 3 outfielders have been having communication issues so far. They need to yell guys off better, somehow. Maybe its a crowd noise thing too, I dunno. That was Happ's ball for sure, Tucker should have called Nico off last night, and PCA has been trying to catch some of Happ's flyballs. That said, those bloops in no-man's land with multiple fielders are IMO the hardest plays to make.
  12. Yeah that was weird, but maybe Counsell doesn't want to mess with the flow of the lineup since its going so well re: batting him 3rd.
  13. It's really nice to have a lineup strong enough where there's a different hero every night and some guys can afford to be in inevitable slumps.
  14. Debuting Shaw in the toughest month possible considering Tokyo and the schedule and the Chicago April weather after a short spring for him has been a crazy assignment for him and not surprised at all he's struggling. At least he's played solid D the last couple of series and taking walks.
  15. Yeah we have Rea, Assad, and Wicks for Steele's spot. Cubs were prepared for something like this. I don't think they'll consider a trade until they see what they have in these guys. Assad has been capable in the past, Wicks could be solid enough, and Rea looked surprisingly good last night with increased velo sitting 94-96. They won't replace Steele but someone might have a solid season. Or they might all be mediocre, who knows. Horton might contribute later i agree.
  16. Ricketts only cares about making money. Does a big Tucker extension help or risk him making more money is the real question. The Cubs goal is to spend as little money as it takes to field a team competitive enough to fill the seats and maintain Marquee ratings most of the year and hopefully get into the playoffs & roll the dice.
  17. Counsell said after the game that Seiya just reaggravated the wrist on his last lineout in tonight's game and right now he's day-to-day. Good news it sounds like.
