    Probably not this year. Let them play every day. All the Cubs need from that 26th spot is a guy who can play decent defense in the infield and better than average speed. If the Cubs do bring up Long it will be due to an injury and them letting him play. Maybe Murray has an outside shot,’if they don’t consider him someone for their future and don’t mind letting him ride the bench. For me, the last spot should be their best fielding infielder in the minors who can also run a bit.

    So is am not entirely sure if the rules, but couldn’t Craig have but Bregman into the game at 3rd and just lose the DH. If that’s the rule, CC screwed up. Who cares about the Dah when you have a 4 run lead.

    Busch clean up? Sure, that makes sense. He is doing so well.

    I doubt they send him down. He is typically a slow starter. Not this slow, but he doesn’t really turn it on until the weather gets warm. I think they will give him more time to start hitting. He isn’t streaky like Happ. But he doesn’t have down times, and then gets hot.

    To a lesser extend, the same can be asked about Busch. He is coming off a year where his OPS+ was 148. The year before it was 118. That was his first full season. Yes, he has started poorly. But I am not worried about him YET. Unless there is something physically wrong with him, he will come around.

    Very hard to predict the playoffs. Do the Cubs have the horses in the rotation? Maybe they do. Does anyone really know what Cabrera will become in the playoffs? Is Shota for real this year? How well will Steele pitch when he comes back? Will Boyd hold up this year with less innings during the regular season? Even if 3 of the 4 answers are positive responses, that would give the Cubs a solid playoff rotation. And maybe they add a starter in a trade.

    I’m not a huge fan of the “see what sticks” method of building a pen. But, if we are being honest, they aren’t bad at doing that. For all that wanted Williams as the closer, he just blew a game and has an era around 6. Diaz is going to be out for 3 months. The year before he was Scott, who sucks. Even Hader is on a long IL stint. Paying top dollar for a closer does appear to be fools money. While spreading the money around into several pen arms never gets you a top guy, it does give them options. And as I said, they do pretty well with how they spend it.

    I feel pretty good about the team as well. Obviously they have to stay away from any more pitching injuries and get Palencia and Maton back on the early side of their timeframe. Also, Steele coming back could be a huge addition. To me they look like a 90+ win team. Division does appear better, however. So this could be a race all season. Both the pirates and the reds have some solid staring pitching. Brewers can never be counted out. But in the end, IMO, the Cubs have the best 26 man roster and should prevail.

    Well a few of those guys are starters. But, yes, I agree that whichever catcher isn’t starting could be the best bench catcher in the game, Shaw is a great utility bat and Conforto is a solid left handed bench off the bench. Last guy is just that. A guy who hardly plays. Very solid bench.

    Here we go. No idea who this guy is. Probably our 12 relief pitcher, so how good can he be?

    Wish the lead was bigger with the pen we have available. Not very comfortable with who we have to pitch.

    Maybe pen availability? Last week they still had Palencia.

    Exactly. Wouldn’t surprise me if a corner spot is filled by either Shaw or someone in the system. Maybe they give an outfielders glove to Ramirez and tell him to go play left, if he was the best hitter of the group. Or Shaw to the outfield and Ramirez to Shaw’s spot. Between Shaw, Ramirez, Triantos, Long, Rojas and Alcantara I can see one starter and one utility guy next year.

    I thought Happ sucked? Isn’t that what everyone keeps saying? He needs to sit because of his bad start. How can he possibly be the WAR leader in left field and so many people are down on him?

    I really doubt Ramirez is blocked if he can hit. I just don’t think it is that hard to grab an outfield glove and go play left field. If he hits they will find a spot. Cam Smith and Shaw have moved to the outfield. Ramirez can follow if he hits.

    Split is fine, but with the Phillies down I would like 3 of 4. Trip to California is going to be rough. If they split these they have a real chance at a 4-6, 10 game stretch.

    Makes sense too. Phillies are bad against lefties. Might as well give them as many as you can.

    I thought the Cubs were activating Boyd for that game. Can’t announce him yet, since he isn’t even in the team.

    Of course it is a no win situation. But better to face a guy they can strike out than a guy who makes a lot of contract. I don’t think anyone is saying had they did something else it would have worked. Just, pitching to the best contact hitter in the team when they have their best baserunner on 3rd is probably the worst option they could have taken.

    I heard the highlight of the last inning and even Coomer said he was shocked the Mets were pitching to Nico. I agree, there are no real good options and there was a good chance the Cubs score no matter what the manager did. But pitching to Nico was thr worst decision of his bad options. I know that as a fan I was very happy when I found they weee pitching to him. Again, to be clear, I am not saying my decision would have saved the Mets. I get the Cubs weee cert likely to score. Put pitching to a guy who is very good with men on base and who makes contact better than almost anyone in baseball, just isn’t a good decision.
