  1. Cubs need to land one of those two or have a trade for a pitcher ready to go.
  2. I understand the flaws in long term contracts. But major market teams should have enough resources to work around the last few years if those sort of deals. Yes, they normally look bad at the end. So I guess that principle is less egregious than their refusal to spend money beyond the LT line. However, Cuzi is correct, both are stupid. Maybe not equally stupid, but stupid, none the less.
  3. Honestly, just hoping we come away with one of Imai or King and then another pen arm. (Keller, Fairbanks or if we have to aim lower, Kopech). Then add a bat who can hit left handed pitching well, and fill in with lesser guys. I seriously doubt Bregman is a possibility. Wish Okamato is, but I think he will cost too much. Maybe if they get King and Kopech he is an option. 🤷
  4. Actually all that needed to be said was what you said in your response. I errored by not acknowledging he wouldn’t have ever gotten that sort of deal so the Dodgers shouldn’t have to pay tax on $70M. I appreciate your response.
  5. You can explain with sounding so condescending. And I get all of what you are saying. That said, for whatever reason certain players want their contracts to look bigger than they actually are. Ohtani, as an example. And if agreeing to it doesn’t hurt the team in any way, why not do it for the player. Yes, my example of Ohtani making $70M over $42M(which you corrected me, should be $46M) is something that would never happen, because if there were no deferrals that figure would never be discussed. But honestly that is all you has to say instead of giving condescending replies. Just because you start it with “all due respect” doesn’t make your comments disrespectful.
  6. I agree with this. They should be flexible enough to do it.
  7. But for a team who has no issues with going over the LT it is a huge savings in the penalties. On a Ohtani’s contract the Dodgers are getting away with not having to pay a 90% penalty on $28M a year because by deferring they take down the present day cost of the contract. I would call that pretty substantial.
  8. Probably. 🤷 But I did want Jason to answer. He is the person who generally answers dumb questions. 😬
  9. Same question. Does a team paying deferred money to any player after that player retires, have that money go against their team payroll the year they are paying that retired player.
  10. Damn, one more dumb question, please….. A little off topic, but what impact will the pitch challenge have on players offense? Let’s use Suzuki as an example. He seemed to get a lot of balls called strikes. So if he nets 50 positive challenges over the year doesn’t it stand to reason his BA will improve? He gets 50 more pitches. I do expect more offense this year but don’t know if any formula to back my opinion.
  11. Quick question. When paying the deferred money, does that money go against the team payroll? So using Dansby as an example, had he agreed to the same dollar amount and same years but said for the first 7 years only pay me $20M a year and then for 5 years after pay me the remaining $49M total, does the Cubs payroll in years 8 thru 12 reflect the almost $10M they pay him.
  12. They sure seem to be. Does anyone know why? Have they even been asked about this. They appear to be refusing an advantage they can use to sign someone.
  13. Guess we better hope Chibear is wrong about the payroll. Otherwise there is no way they can spend what Imai will cost and still have some cash to add another 7 players. Imai, alone might cost $25M a year.
  14. Last year he kept too much money for deadline moves. Other than that he doesn’t keep $19M for the deadline. I would guess he has about $35M to spend. Which isn’t a lot but probably closer to what he CAN do. Doesn’t mean he will. But I think your number is too low.
  15. What controlled pitcher are we getting for one year if Nico.
  16. To be clear, that “pathetic attempt” last year netted them 92 wins. I know they should spend much more than they do. But within the guidelines ownership has set, the FO does a pretty good job.
  17. Milner really isn’t a bad pick up. He pitched in 70 games last year and can be effective. However, at 34 he is going to bring the average age of the Cubs up a bit. I know someone who will have an issue with that.
  18. Count me WAY OUT on this idea.
  19. Signing is one year late. I predicted him last year. But it is an ok signing. Obviously this is a small move. We need more
  20. Is Michael Kopech healthy? Wouldn’t he be worth a shot. Instead of Suarez for $16M a year, why not Fairbanks and Kopech for that same money?
  21. Honestly I am mixed on Robert Suarez. I was only using him as an example of a player the Cubs are supposedly interested in. I was just making a point that if they have real interest in him, Imai and Bregman, as a major market team they shouldn’t worry about getting all of them and going over the LT line.
  22. Then you took it wrong. I know why they won’t sign all those guys. Doesn’t mean I agree with their reasoning or that they are right to limit their spenskng to under the LT line. I specifically said as a major market team the LT line shouldn’t be a salary cap for the Cubs. I am not suggesting they go to $300M+ or be the Dodgers. I am saying their payroll shouldn’t be capped at the LT line. By not spending they are refusing to take advantage of the only advantage major markets teams have….. the ability to spend money. Signing Imai, Robert Suarez and Bregman takes them probably into the top 5 teams on spending. Since they are a top team in generating revenues I see no reason they shouldn’t also be a top 5 team in spending. And, with all the guys coming off the payroll at the end of next year, if they really need to lower payroll for ‘27 they can. With a new CBA we don’t even know if they will have to lower payroll.
  23. The Suarez I was referring to is the relief pitcher. I want no part in the 3rd baseman.
  24. I defended you earlier. But now I have to ask….. what the hell are you talking about? Why does Nico have to go? Your first post wasn’t the dumbest I have ever read, but your collection of comments is bordering on pure nonsense.
