  1. I want either Ohtani or Soto as the big acquisition this off season. JD Martinez is strictly a DH. So until the Cubs are out on Ohtani and Soto, I am not interested in JD. He is a decent fallback, but it would be a little disappointing if they ended up with him as DH. As for Turner and Hoskins, I agree with everyone 1908 said.
  2. The issue with JD and Turner, somewhat, is they are strictlybDH. Hoskins would play 1st. Maybe Turner could as well. But I like Hoskins better, both for his bat and glove.
  3. Yep, it has been proven you don’t have to win the division to be in the World Series. But the NL team in the WS is also in SF division. I just don’t believe SF has all that great a chance at the playoffs every year because of how tough there division is. Cubs, on the other hand, “should” dominate and very well could dominate if they decide to spend like a large market team that they are. Of course the Dodgers, being the most likely destination of Ohtani, can not only claim they could dominate the division, they have proved it for years.
  4. I don’t know if it matters to Ohtani or not, but he has to consider with the Dodgers he shares the spotlight with Betts and Freeman. With the Cubs he owns the spotlight. Also, he has been in LA for several years. We have no idea his thoughts on the city. There is a report that Darvish talked Chicago up. Darvish was also in LA, yet he spoke highly of Chicago. He did that a few years back with Suzucki too. Having Suzucki here can also influence Ohtani. And if they get a Japanese pitcher as a FA as well, he has a few Japanese players on the team. That could matter. Bottom line is the Cubs do have a lot going for them. I just matters what Ohtani feels is important, besides just money…..of course.
  5. If Ohtani wants to win he won’t go the San Fran. They are always going to be second best or worse in that division. With the Dodgers there, I don’t see them as a sure playoff team year after year. The Cubs could sell him on being a big market in a division where they “should” dominate because they are the only big market. The youth in the way, the money they have and a commitment by ownership/front office to always be the top of the central. Giants cannot make the same claim and promise. Keep in mind, I am not saying the Cubs will do all they can tell Ohtani they can do. I am just saying they can make that argument. And we all know Ohtani wants to win. The path to winning is clearer in Chicago
  6. Why stop there….. Alonso too.
  7. I am not sure that is what this discussion is about, but I agree 100% with your post. I find myself responding like this often.
  8. Agreed. I do not feel the goal should be to go over the LT this year but then in 25’ lose Soto and Hoskins/Alonso salary to come back under. I understand the idea of going over and then losing the salary of whichever 1st baseman you get in 24. But they don’t have to lose Soto as well. And honestly my idea was either Soto or ohtani(if Soto they extend him) Hoskins/Alonso and then trade for Glasnow. And Glasnow being the guy they don’t sign in 25. If it is possible see if whoever they have a 1st they can resign. I don’t think they could be Alonso and Ohtani in 25. But they probably can if it is Soto. And they probably can if it is Hoskins with either Ohtani or Soto. if both Ohtani and Soto are too cost prohibitory with either of those first baseman that is where Belt comes in. Bottom line is I want either Ohtani or Soto beyond 24,. They can figure out how later.
  9. I like it. But I think they have to add another starting pitcher near the TOR as well. So let’s say lefty Japanese pitcher(don’t know his name), Ohtani, Polanco, Belt and starting pitcher from Morel trade. I like that. In that scenario Belt is fine. As I said, I don’t dislike him, just can’t be the main get. In this scenario he is the 4th or 5th biggest move. That works for me.
  10. But then no Soto or Ohtani? I don’t dislike Belt. I realize he is decent for a lefty bat in a platoon. I just want them to aim higher, I think Hoskins fits better if they do sign either Soto or Otani. And of course, Alonso even better. I am just not sure if the cost in salary and in assets needed to get him.
  11. He will be 36 years old next season. The last season he had 350 AB was 2019 and that year his ops+ was 97. As a platoon, part time guy, he is ok. But, yes, I would like the Cubs to aim higher. I wouldn’t be upset if he was the 3rh most important pick up next year. Just wouldn’t target him.
  12. He will be 36 3 weeks into the season and pretty much been a part time player the last 3 years. I hope they do better than him. Guess if they traded for a solid third baseman or a Morel somehow proves he can play third, they sign Otani or trade for Soto, get 2 starting pitchers via trade or FA and then Belt was added, he would be ok. But not someone I would target as a solid signing.
  13. Hosmer was over that 120+ in 38 games in 2020. Aside from that he was strictly a 110+ guy at best. And often worse. Mancini didn’t play in 2020, and the was 103 and 106 the two years before the cubs signed him. He had 1 year of 134 in 2018. Those guys are not the same as Hoskins. Hoskins only gamble is he is coming back from an injury. He has always been a solid bat. Same cannot be said for Mancini and Hosmer.
  14. Nothing in the Cubs past would suggest they will sign someone like Hader. I am pretty sure the Cubs will not be giving a 3 or 4 year deal for a relief pitcher.
  15. I would love to get Soto for Wesnicki. But I think you are not being realistic. He will cost more. Sure trade Wesnicki for Soto and then Assad for Alonso. Sure that would be better. And if they could do it I would be all for it. Then sign a pitcher and make a trade for a young arm. And, again, if you could do it without Morel I would be very happy. But I doubt that is realistic.
  16. Mancini and Hosmer were bad and past their prime. Their careers were near the end and not very good before the signing. Hoskins was very good his entire time in Phillie. He got hurt so missed the year. Maybe he is a risk due to injury, but he is not in the Mancini/Hosmer class. Neither of them where very good for several years before signing with the Cubs.
  17. Exactly what I am trying to say. I guess it isn’t enough for some.
  18. Alonso ops+ 136 career Hoskins ops+ 125 career. Not that different. Not enough to lose a prospect to get Alonso when all you have to do is pay Hoskins. Of course this is just my opinion. I would just rather keep the prospect in the event PCA sucks or they want to make another deal for a proven major leaguer. I am fine with you liking Alonso more. He is better. But Hoskins isn’t bad either.
  19. You do realize other teams will want to sign guys too, right? Not getting the very top of every position is hardly pulling back. Other teams also want to make trades for guys. If yiu always give the most up on trades you are depleting the system. I would rather have Hoskins and Alcantara, as an example, then Alonso and no Alcantara. And not because I hold Alcantara in high regard to be an everyday player in the team. While he might be, the real reason I want him is he is another asset, for maybe another trade.
  20. Again, what else do they do that would satisfy you? They are not going over the second level of the LT. Does trading for Alonso chance your stance? Does him and Soto and a young pitcher in a trade, plus a starting pitcher as a free agent do it. Does that pitcher have to be Yamamoto? I didn’t suggest Alonso because I don’t want to lose another prospect for 1 year of him. I don’t feel Hoskins is much worse and yiu get him for just money. But for the sake of this discussion is Alonso, Soto, Yamamoto and let’s say Woo or a different Seattle pitcher a splashy enough off season for you?
  21. I am not naming the pitcher because I don’t know the name of the other Japanese pitcher. They can go over the LT this year and then not extend Hoskins and be under again in 25’. Maybe in 25, they can extend Soto and he can move to first. A lot can happen in 25. But jf they did all of what I said that is an aggressive very solid off season.
  22. How is a Soto trade, a trade for a young controlled starting pitcher, signing Hospkins, signing a TOR starting pitcher and then a few pen arms a disappointing off season? How is that not aggressive? And they can sign Soto long term too. He doesn’t have to be gone.
  23. Well I also said sign another pitcher. I was talking about a quality starting pitcher. If they go the Soto route, and yiu expect more than that yiu are going to be very disappointed. They would be a great off season. And that would be going for it. What do you expect. Keep in mind I want Otani instead of Soto. But my comment was strictly with the idea of a Soto trade.
  24. I wouldn’t give them Horton. I would give them a combination of any of the other two mentioned. Then trade Morel for a young controlled pitcher and sign another pitcher. Maybe sign Hoskins as well and start the season. If they want they can spend a little on a few pen arms too.
