  1. I’m not at that level of negative yet. But I also don’t think it is a a slam dunk they get a few solid players at a reasonable price. I am fully aware that what you are suggesting can happen. I just choose to believe they will get a few good players. Still, this off season.
  2. Cool. As I said, I hope you are right. Honestly I don’t see why not either Imanaga or Montgomery. Neither cost a draft pick. Neither is crazy expensive. Both fit in the top end of the rotation. No real excuse, but we are talking about the Cubs and their insistence on “smart spending”. Which might end up the problem.
  3. So then you are looking at it as the Cubs more likely than not to either sign one of the top 3 starters on the market or trading for a higher end starter? You are not considering fallback guys like Manaea, Paxton, Clevenger? Maybe even Stroman. I hope you are right. I am just not too sure.
  4. Who says no? Cease and Robert for Horton, PCA, Brown, Ferris and a choice of Alcantara, Shaw, Cassie. Only one of the last 3. Then Cubs extend Cease similar to the Glasnow extension, and rework Robert’s contract into a 10 year deal. I was listening to Bruce Levine discussing if the Sox should keep Robert or not. He tossed out PCA, Horton and Brown just for Robert. IMO that is a bit too much. So I added Cease and a few other Cub prospects.
  5. Probably not. Just trying to find some positive spin on the signing. Otherwise it is of no impact or negative impact because now that is one less fall back option.
  6. This could be looked at 2 ways. First, it takes a possible back up plan out for the Cubs, as some were starting to like Manaea. But this also most likely eliminates a team from one of the top 3 pitchers. I don’t see the Mets doubling up on anyone pitcher. So we are down to the 3 lefties at the top and a fallback of Paxton and maybe Stroman. Anyone interested in Clevenger? I think his outside activities are hurting him more than his pitching talent. But someone is going to sign him and he wouldn’t shock me to throw 160+ with an era under 4. MOR starter but a real jackass.
  7. Stroman???? Or do they go Manaea or Paxton? Not inspiring. Maybe they go with a trade for that pitcher. As for position players who else would you want? If they got Bellinger do they still get Hoskins? If/when PCA makes the team that becomes tricky. If someone in that group is the DH Morel has to be playing 3rd. While I haven’t ruled that out, I feel most have. And I am not sure they want to dedicate 4 or 5 years to Chapman at 3rd. Again, if Morel could play 3rd you can add JD, Solar and Justin Turner as possible signings.
  8. Well if we take it the Giants are out on any of the top pitchers and Bellinger, that is positive news for the Cubs. Who is left for any of the pitchers and Bellinger. Field is shrinking.
  9. This sums it up nicely. Hope the players are prepared to strike a long time the next CBA. These owners all suck. Collusion all over again.
  10. Bold prediction. By Monday morning the Cubs will have made a move to add someone substantial to the major league roster. Just feeling I have.
  11. How did we miss out on Nola. I mean Aaron is one thing, but now we missed on Austin too. He would have been the perfect 6th catcher.
  12. If only Amaya was our most pressing concern. What a wonderful team we would have. I agree with you. He did fine as a back up catcher. And I expect him a bit better this year. There are definitely more pressing needs.
  13. I don’t know exactly what they end up doing this off season. But I am 99.9% certain the Cubs signing Hader isn’t happening.
  14. Why is it obvious that Morel is strictly a trade chip? I haven’t seen his names mention in any trade proposals from the Cubs. In fact, I haven’t seen any trade proposal from the ins with anyone mentioned. If anything, weeks ago when Jed got upset with a reporter it was because that reporter suggested Morel was being discussed and Jed said that wasn’t true.
  15. But at what cost are those guys available. That is going to hit the prospect capital hard for any of them. I really don’t see why the Tigers would deal Skubal unless they got major league talent back. They could win that division. Sorry, I just don’t see it. I think just like the cost of free agents is too high, the trade costs will be too high too.
  16. Great!!! News of the Cubs just keeps getting better!!!! Can’t wait to see who slots in behind Steele. A real battle for that #2 spot between 3, #4 starters. Awesome!
  17. I get not being overly concerned about the off season because a lot of what we expected the Cubs to do is still available. But feeling good about the off season? That is a bit of a reach for me. I agree they still have a lot of guys they can get. Really the only guy gone that many thought they might get is Glasnow. I know Ohtani, Soto and even Yamamoto were guys some were hoping for, but those were all long shots, IMO. That said, I think the best I can say about what is happening so far is there isn’t a reason for concern. YET. There are still very real Cub targets available. But soon things need to start taking shape.
  18. I don’t see him that low. I think the lowest would be $154 to $161 for 7. And if that’s what he ends up at he really should be a Cub again.
  19. I would hope are a minimum the starter they bring in as at least at Stroman’s level. Then that 5th spot could be fought between Wicks, Assad, Wesneski, Brown, and Horton. I realize Brown and Horton would probably not happen until June or later, and one of the other guys might be used in a trade. I would then hope they get a couple decent pen arms. And finally 2 bats, one for sure being left handed. For me that is the least they should do this off season. IMO the path that could work is a Naylor/Bieber trade and then sign Chapman. That fills the offense. Center is Tauchman/Canario until PCA is ready. Morel is DH. Bieber is the starter. That leaves 2 pen spots. My guess is 1 (at least) of the guys mentioned as 5th starter potential would be traded to the Guardians.
  20. Sadly, yes I can.
  21. I agree Morel is a long shot for 3rd. Which sucks. Because if he could do it the Bellinger signing works, even with PCA. Just play the 5 guys as 3 outfielders, a DH and 1st baseman. And rotate them. Bellinger would sort of a super utility guy filling in everywhere. If Morel has to DH there is not room for Bellinger and PCA on the same team provided Alonso is at 1st.
  22. I think Bellinger was mentioned on day 1 last year.
  23. In free agency I agree with you. But in a trade I don’t want the Cubs giving up Brown and Morel for one year of Alonso, or Alcantara for 1 year of Bieber. These are just examples, but the point is if teams are greatly overvaluing their player and asking for a return that is too much, Jed shouldn’t make that trade. In free agency in order to get someone you just have to sometimes give the going rate.
  24. Most of our discussions have been about Jed waiting on the FA market to drop. But he also might be waiting on the trade market to soften as well. We have seen Sale go for a solid prospect. Glasnow went for more than expected, Rhe white Sox are asking for a crazy return for Cease. I think Jed’s delay in getting things done is very much a result of teams asking an awful lot for established talent. And he is just not willing to give up that much prospect assets.
  25. I don’t see a fit for both of them.
