Guess it depends on what “soon”means to some people and what “impact moves” means. Note the plural there. Unless he does something we haven’t really discussed, I don’t see more than 1 impact move he can even make. Anything else would be small”ish”. I read it as, before spring training the Cubs will add a few more pieces. Which, really isn’t news. I agree with you, a real wowser headline!

Well if the Cubs ran their team as a large revenue team I would not want both signed. However if we are being totally honest, IMO,the Cubs are never going to get that elite talent via free agency. So I would take my chances with the team being very competitive the next 3 years with Bellinger and Chapman along with the others they have for 3 more years. If I felt they would be going after Soto next year, I would be fine with them signing one. But I refuse to go down that road again. Do you not think a team with Chapman and Bellinger plus what they already have would be favorites in the division for a few years? I do. And it isn’t like they can’t make a trade or two to move thing a around. If Shaw is ready they can move Nico. If PCA is ready they can either move Morel and DH between the Suzuki, Happ, Bellinger and Busch, or they can trade a corner guy.

If I had to chose one or the other I would hope they go Bellinger. However, why not both? Even if in the high end they cost $52M a year they might only then sign a one arm. If that arm is 6M where does that have the payroll land? It would be over the first layer and under the next one. They have around $40M coming off the books next year. They can do over this year and be back under the next. I highly doubt they do this. I realize that. But the point is, they could.

Others have repeatedly pointed out how stupid it would be to not go over the LT this year because of that they did last year. Of course, doesn’t mean they do go over it. So I assumed you want Thielbar more is you think Morrow will cost too much. Ok, based on your scenario it makes sense. The other problem is, why would the Twins trade him? To me, if Jed doesn’t go over the LT this year it is going to be tough to be the favorite in the central. And there is no reason not to go over. But you might be right, unfortunately. Also, if Belli goes elsewhere I would be ok with Chapman. Sure, the offense would struggle more, but him at 3rd and PCA in center and you have the best defense In baseball. Might win a few more lower scoring games.

Why would you want to give anything away for a 36 year old pitcher when you can sign a similar pitcher, in Moore, without giving any assets away? What do you like about Thielbar that has him so much better than Moore?

This is a very solid arguement for Chapman being the main signing, not Bellinger. Chapman also fills a bigger hole, tbh. Center can be filled by Tauchman at around league average and/or PCA, who is a top prospect closer to the majors. The only issue is, they said they want to find someone who hits right handed pitching better. Not sure Chapman would be the choice over Bellinger. However, I do now see how Chapman makes as much sense as Bellinger.

Nice comeback when you have no way of proving the Cubs made a mistake in trading for Chapman and had enough without him. He was very good in the playoffs. Only hiccups were a game they were winning 8-2 in the 9th against the Dodgers and for some reason he came in to pitch the 9th. And then game 7 (WS)after pitching 2.2 inning in game 5, pitching again in game 6 and then completely gassed in game 7. That said, they probably don’t even get to a game 7 if he isn’t on the team.

This is perhaps the most ridiculous comment I have seen on this board. If Chapman isn’t a Cub he goes to the Giants, most likely. If he is on the Giants the Cubs don’t come back in game 4. Chapman had a bad game 7. That was from overuse. You know why he was overused? They didn’t have anyone else. When else was Chapman anything but solid? Game 5 of the World Series he held 1 run lead for more than an 2 inning. He came in the game in the 7th. He shouldn’t have been used in game 6. Stop acting like you are the only one who watches the Cubs and you are the smartest person in the room. You are not either of those things.

If you believe the Cubs will go over the first LT line the idea of them holding back money doesn’t exist. They can go to a number Ricketts is comfortable with and have plenty extra for the trade deadline. That said, I don’t want them to spend $20M a year and give Hader a 5 or 6 year deal. I would much rather add 2 bats and a solid pen arm (at a lower cost than Hader). Or even 1 bat, one one pen arm and another starting pitcher.

If Theo doesn’t get Chapman the Cubs would be on year 116 without a championship. So I have no idea why that deal annoyed you. And they aren’t spending $20M and giving Hader 5 years at that average. And I wouldn’t either.

I one hand, I do think they are only going to get one more pen arm. Preferably a guy who they use in the 8th inning. I feel a guy like Maton is more of a 6th-7th inning guy. He is a decent reliever, but not a sure shut down guy. But maybe they value him more than that. So he wouldn’t shock me. But, on the other hand, I feel if they were going to add one more pen arm it would be a lefty. or it would be a more sure 8th inning guy like Stephenson. I wouldn’t be thrilled with Maton being the only move they make for the pen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

The last interview I saw with Hawkins, he said Busch could go to third. They did say he was their first baseman, however that could be a comment based on how the team is currently constructed. So they could conceivably go after a 1st baseman and move Busch. That opens them up for Naylor, Alonso, Hoskins, Belt. I am not argue this as good or bad. I have done that enough. Just explaining how they can add someone like btb suggested.

He cost $20M and is on the last year of his deal. I know BBTV isn’t always right about a guys value, but they don’t have his SV particularly high. I would think if the Cubs wanted to put together a package for him they could. Of course this is all possible only if they want to move him. But that was rumored early this spring. I would think a package they would consider for Alonso would be pretty similar for Bregman. (In value anyway)

Hey, if Houston does sign Hader does that maybe free up Bregman? I know it was mentioned earlier. Isn’t he and Alruve a free agent next year. Signing Hader pushes them over the first LT threshold. Any chance they won’t want to be there, or know they won’t sign Bregman next year?

I don’t know about Gio being the answer, but I agree with your second part. I know biitner accused me of being a prospect hugger, but I think that title should go to others. I am all for getting the best team you can get on the field in 24 and figure out what happens after that. If a guy is blocked, trade him. Or trade the guy blocking him. Dodgers didn’t worry about blocking Lux, Busch or anyone else when they brought in guys like Turner, Betts to play second or Freeman. They figured something out when that guy was ready. That is the approach the Cubs should be using.

Good post. Kind of changing my opinion on Chapman. If they can get him in a 4 or even 5 year deal that does allow the Cubs to move minor league assets for talent elsewhere. Or, as you said, Nico only has a few more years after his one. Shaw can play 2nd.

It isn’t about Polanco, specifically. In fact, if they only add one bat, sure, someone like Bellinger would be fine. They can probably survive at 3rd with in house options, as someone did suggest. It only takes one of the 5 or so options they have to work out. I am only trying to see where a 2nd bat would fit in. I think the obvious answer would be 3rd. Between Jed talking and the buzz that the Cubs would be the most active, it appears there would be more than just a Bellinger signing and a pen arm added. To me, that isn’t very active. But if nothing fits, they don’t do it. Not sure that is enough for them to win the division. But TBF, not sure adding a Polanco/JD Davis type 3rd baseman is enough either. Guess we can wait and see what Jed is going to do.

That makes sense. Guess they could use a lefty bat, or at least a bat that can hit right handed pitching, on the bench or as a spot starter. Just don’t like the idea of a Madrigal/Wisdom split at 3rd with a hope a young guy comes up. But that may be all they can/will do. Jed did fool us with the Busch trade. Maybe he has something else no one saw coming.

I could be wrong, but I thought the mention of another 2 bats being added was after they got Busch.. so he wouldn’t be one of the bats Jed was talking about. The more we talk about it, a second bat playing anywhere makes a lot more sense if the Cubs do think either Busch or Morel can play 3rd. That opens up all kinds of options. But if they can’t I don’t see a point to a second small bat, if not for 3rd. Why take AB away from Morel for a small bat? As you said, if it isn’t a good fit why do it? Why even add a second bat in that case?

Maybe. But if you want to win the division you don’t do it counting on a prospect coming up in June to save the day. Especially, in the case of Murray, a guy not in your top 10 prospects and not a top 100 prospect. In the case of Shaw, not a guy with 150 minor league AB before the start of the season you expect him up. It could happen. Just not a good game plan IMO.

I’m not either. But I also am not so sure they are happy with them either. Jed said we are in the 4th or 5th inning of the off season. He surprised us with Busch and even Imanaga. Maybe he has something else cooking.
