    I am starting Hicks on my fantasy team. The last time the Cubs faced one of my pitchers was the last time they actually did anything in the first few innings of a game, when they chased Montas after 2 innings. So I do expect them to come out fast tonight. And You're welcome.

    Why? Which of the 9 teams battling for 2 WC spots is going to run away with it? Why wouldn’t the Cubs have a similar chance as any of the teams, all around the same record, to play well from now until the trade deadline. Or, maybe all continue to play around .500. I know people can point to all the problems with the Cubs. But since there are so many teams in a similar spot, doesn’t it stand to reason those teams have issues too? Besides that, who is selling now? I can see the Marlins, Rockies, A’s, Angels and white sox. That is it. So right now prices would be very high. Maybe you are right, the Cubs will be pushing up daisies by the deadline, if they wait. But if that’s the case, they would sell. And more likely than your scenerio is they will be in a similar spot at the deadline, as they are now. Maybe at that time there will be more sellers so prices will be lower and more players will be available. Sure, I would love to make moves now, but it takes two teams to make a deal. And I don’t see why any of the 5 teams that are obvious sellers would be in a hurry to make a deal unless it was way lopsided in their favor. And, IMO, the Cubs or any of the teams fighting for WC spots, are not in a position to make a lopsided trade to add a guy now. My guess is nothing happens anytime soon.

    I don’t get it either. Busch needs to play. I guess if Tauchman were in right and Suzuki was the DH, the argument could be he wants a better OF defense. But he is using Tauchman as the DH. Doesn’t make sense.

    Pretty sure the Cubs know about Edward. Palencia and Cuas have been up. So that leaves Roberts, who has walked 6 guys in 9 innings. He has pitched 9 innings in the last 2 years. What makes you think he will be any better than what they have? And also, don’t you think it the Cubs knew he would be better, he would be up? Making all sorts of 40 man roster moves, releasing guys. Wanting guys down and still end up with the same type of reliever is just bit progress to me. They need a closer. Period. And right now none are available. That said, maybe they do send Little down and bring someone up. I don’t expect that to matter much, if at all.

    The trouble with this idea is that none of the pen arms your mentioning in the minors is any better than the middle relief pitching they currently have on the team. So cut Mastrobuoni and then bring up Edwards. So send down Little? Does that really matter? You are replacing one iffy middle relief pitcher with another one. The cubs don’t need random pen arms. They have enough of them. They need a closer, period. Then everyone moves down a spot. Kind of what the Dbacks did with Sewald last year. Brought him in and everyone moved down.

    I have to think this is some sort of a record. 3 pitches bunted fair in a row. I don’t think that could have ever happened before. But it worked.

    So only buy when you are a team that wins 100 games. Otherwise sell. Great idea. No sense being a team who wins 84-90 games. Those teams never make it to the WS! Right?????

    Hard to get a guy out when he yiu have to get to strike 5 on him. Ump missed 2 strikes to a guy and then he got a hit. I have had enough of home plate umpires.

    Honestly, what would you expect them to do? Look at what other teams in their spot have done. They aren’t going to give away higher end prospects for rentals, and they shouldn’t. There is nothing they can do to make them into a team that will challenge the Dodgers, Braves or Phillies for wins. So there isn’t a reason to deplete the farm to add guys to try catching those teams. A team that might catch the Brewers or at the very least is a wild card team is the best they can do. So why isn’t making smaller moves to improve the team such a bad idea. Seemed to work for the last 3 teams who went to the WS in the NL.

    For the record, I don’t think they make a big move (high end) at the deadline, either. I just don’t think they sell. As for Jed’s comments, he could add a pen arm, a guy who gives them something off the bench, an inning eating starting pitcher and that would be considered all sorts of upgrades. But it still wouldn’t be a big splash. I think something like that is as big as can be expected.

    The thread is about if the Cubs should trade Bellinger now. My answer is no. I don’t think they should sell at all, and especially not now. As for what they should buy, that is a different topic. I do think if they buy, the LT threshold won’t be an issue. I think they will go over it. But again, that really isn’t the point of this discussion.

    I think for Vlad the Cubs would lose one of their MLB top 100 prospects. Maybe a guy somewhere after Cassie, Shaw, PCA and Horton. Maybe a decent second piece as well. For Alonso, I think you are correct. As for Robert, I think the Sox will price themselves out of any serious offers.

    I completely agree. Don’t understand the references to the Cubs as not being good enough because for 5 weeks they have been playing not great baseball. Funny thing is that is probably the same people who were praising as a possible great team for playing great baseball the first 5 weeks of the season. Same guys. Same team. So which is it, are they great or do they suck? It is almost like people have never followed a baseball team thru an entire year. My guess is they are somewhere in the middle. Pretty good. And as you just said, pretty good gives them a chance at winning the NL.

    My only concern would be with so few teams selling and so many possibly buying, prices may be higher than expected. And paying premium pricing to maybe make the playoffs just doesn’t make sense. Now, teams like the Dodgers, Braves, Phillies who are pretty much playoff teams, it makes more sense for them to be more aggressive. Alonso might be worth a top 50 prospect (as an example) to a sure playoff team, but no so much to a team just hoping to get in.

    So back to baseball, I keep hearing about Alonso, Vlad and Robert. I was listening to the radio and Levine was on. He alluded to the Mets maybe wanting PCA back for Alonso. That would be a huge NO. So while guys want one of the big bats, you have to realize the cost. I think the only one I consider PCA being moved for would be Robert. I am not sure the cubs should give a top 8 prospect in their system for Alonso. Not for half a year. As for Vlad, maybe a bit more because of an extra year. But if Levine is right and Alonso cost PCA, I doubt the Cubs make any move on a big bat. Because Vlad would cost more and Robert even more.

    Agreed. And I am not even sure they need some sort of hit streak right now. Just start playing better baseball. Win some series. They are fine where they are right now. But they do need to start playing better ball. The good thing is, IMO, they have the players that can do it.

    Why aren’t they good enough to be buyers? So are only 4 teams in the NL buyers? Maybe they don’t make a bold move that a sure playoff team makes, but I don’t see why they would sell. They are 3 games better than last year at this time.. And last year after 93 games they were 7 games under .500. And they didn’t sell. If the question is “is now the time to trade Bellinger” the answer is absolutely not. Maybe if they are 6-8 under 500 near the deadline they do that. But not at this time.

    Better question is why? Why would they trade him? I don’t think this team will be in a dump mode at the deadline. So why trade someone who plays everyday? And then when yiu add his value wouldn’t bring much back, all the more….. why trade him?

    How awful do you think Hendricks will be at some point in his life? I mean if that is what you are using as a guide to whose jersey you would want from the 16’ team, wouldn’t he be the least likely to become an awful person?

    I agree. He would be a good get. As you said he is only 25. But the issue is, could the Cubs keep him for some of those prime years between 27-31? And what does that contract look like?
