  1. Let’s not. Let’s talk baseball and stop this ridiculous baiting.
  2. I don’t think either signing was seen as a threat to Boras. And neither should be. I honestly thought either would be the last bat on the team. One more lefty on the team when healthy. My message may have come out wrong. I was not being doom and gloom suggesting this was all the Cubs are going to do. And I definitely don’t think this has anything to do with the Cubs going after another bigger bat.
  3. Let’s please get back to baseball. I don’t even mind people disagreeing with me about either Smith or Peralta being the 26th man in the team this year when healthy. Anything is better than arguing about Ricketts.
  4. Maybe. But the dodgers kept a 37 year old Peralta on the team with designs of winning a World Series.
  5. Now this is my version of cynical!!!!
  6. That is fine. BTW, I said when heathy one of them will be in the team. I did not say opening day. But, anyway, much rather discuss this than the other nonsense in this thread. When I saw Peralta signed I honestly thought second left hand bat. I remembered him being a bit better. I didn’t even hate it until looking at stats. (and his age)Smith was similar. So I was not being cynical or pessimistic. I was just wrong on their level of talent. I do still expect one bigger bag coming in.
  7. I always suggested as the 2nd bat. A left handed bat. I did not mean for it to sound like he was going to play 1st base. It is a “Hosmer like” signing (whether we are talking Smith or Peralta), in my belief that one will be in the team when healthy. This doesn’t take the place of what I hope is one regular bat. This takes the place of the second bat. The one you felt would be at most a part time player. Sorry if my post suggested otherwise to you or anyone else.
  8. We will see 1908. And maybe it won’t be Smith. Maybe Peralta. But I would be surprised if once healthy, one of these two was not on the roster for a decent portion of the season. They still may get Bellinger. And spending less on the last bat added might allow them to get another pen arm. I am not sure why suggesting one of these guys would be the last bat is viewed pessimistic or cynical. Didn’t they sign Hosmer and Mancini just last year in a similar fashion? If it sounded like I was suggesting this is it, this is there last signing, it was not. I just think one of these guys will be in the roster when he is healthy. I still hope for Bellinger of Chapman. And still do think they get one of them.
  9. If fans didn’t go to games because they didn’t like the ownership of the team or how the team was run there would be very few fans at any sporting events. Just look at Chicago as an example. The Bears have McCaskey, the Hawks have Wirtz, the Bulls and Sox have Reinsdorf. Most fans of those teams will tell you the ownership sucks. I grew up a Cubs fan during the Wrigley ownership. Went through the tribune and Zell onto Ricketts. Honestly, I don’t care. Yes, the way he runs the team frustrates me, but so did every other owner. I think ownership will never be liked by 80% of sports fans. Others, like you, will have issues with what the players are being paid. Which would be another reason not to go. Bottom line is anyone who wants to look past all that and go to games because they love live baseball and love the team they grew up watching, and has the means to go to games is going to go. And there is nothing wrong with that, even while they complain about the ownership.
  10. Why? If you are a fan of the team and grew up a fan of the team why wouldn’t you still support the team? I don’t like a lot of people who own corporations. But I still use products from that corporation. If I only frequented places owned by people I like I wouldn’t get out much. Anyone who is a fan of the Cubs, enjoys seeing baseball live and has the ability to go to games shouldn’t stay away from the game just because of the owner. You don’t just switch allegiance of a baseball team like you do a coffee shop because you don’t like the owner. Those who do, that is fine for them. But for those who don’t that is ok too. It is fine to spend money on the team and not like the CEO.
  11. I hope you are right. I am just very down in this front office and ownership right now, so I am not positive one of Peralta or Smith is in the team opening day.
  12. I didn’t say I liked it. But I think he will be that 2nd left handed bat. Hosmer 2024.
  13. I think he might be that extra lefty bat they were suggesting they wanted to sign. This is who gets AB if Morel can handle 3rd. Guess JDM or Belt were not ever really an option. This really does suck.
  14. cubs are signing David Peralta. Didn’t mean to have this as a response to your post. Just wanted to get this news out there.
  15. Absolutely sucks. Do they even have enough under to sign Bellinger and still have a little for the trade deadline? Man, Ricketts sucks!
  16. I am not worried about it either. I just thought I saw it mentioned he was not in camp.
  17. I have my first spring game Sunday. Hope I see someone interesting.
  18. Is Horton in camp? I thought they were holding him back.
  19. I agree with you in his hitting upside. I also believe if he can play 3rd it would be a major win. But if he can’t he is still a solid DH(next year)Just would much rather see him at 3rd so they can sign a DH bat to take AB away from Wisdom and Madrigal. I also agree with you that if he can’t play 3rd he might not be long for the Cubs. But for next year he would DH.
  20. Wildly surprised? I am not going to argue with you on this. Some people just love to use analytics to predict everything. I am not an analytical person. I just see a young guy put up the number he did, get better from one year to the next and still not be in his prime and say “he should get even a bit better” since prime age for a ballplayer js 27-30. But if I had to bet, I would say he is closer to 115 than he is 108 next year. And maybe even 120’s. I would be mildly surprised if he regressed. And, keep in mind I am only talking offensively. I honestly don’t know if he can handle 3rd. I am just glad they are trying him there. BTW, I am in no way criticizing you for your POV. I just don’t share it. I watched baseball long before analytics became a huge thing. I am too old and don’t really want to dig deep into numbers so that I can prove what someone did one year he shouldn’t be able to do again. I just choose to believe if someone did it before and improved for 2 straight years and is still young”ish” there may be more upside. I have at least enough believe to not be wildly surprised if he did it again.
  21. Keeping it in perspective my comment is IF Morel can handle 3rd base it would be a huge win for the Cubs. Offensively he doesn’t even have to improve to be valuable. I am sure a guy with OPS of .821 and OPS+ of 116 has a spot in the line up assuming he also plays a passable 3rd base. I do expect some improvement as well. But my biggest worry is he can’t play 3rd. Then your point in what happens with him in 3 or 4 years becomes a valid point.
  22. But again, so what if he doesn’t develop at all? If he post 821 with OPS+ of 116, he is a bat that deserves to be in the line up. So IF he can play 3rd it would be a huge win. I also find it odd that anyone can say a guy who is under 25 with little AAA experience and basically learned in the majors, won’t develop. Especially so if that someone likes the player and doesn’t want to bash him. Interesting that you mentioned Garcia as if it some dream for Morel to turn into him. They had the same slugging % and Garcia beat Morel in OPS .836 to .821. Alonso checked in at .821 as well. So exactly how much growth does Morel really need to be considered a good offensive player.
  23. What he said.
  24. So modest improvements on 821 OPS? So what is that, 840 OPS? I would consider that very good. Even if he settles into numbers like last year he would be a good offensive player. I understand some people not liking the swing and miss in his game. But in the end, anyone with OPS over 800 and OPS+ of 116 is a solid offensive player. Those place in 3rd on the team last year and 2nd in the current team.
  25. If he is going to use DH for Wisdom he might as well just play Wisdom at 3rd and DH Morel. I see more as a move so they can bring a bat in regardless of that bats position. If Morel can play 3rd this allows them to sign someone like Belt or JDM who would take AB away from Wisdom and Madrigal instead of Morel.
