    Well a good thing that did come out of yesterday’s game is maybe the Cubs do have a trade chip. Hendricks. I imagine if Kyle keeps pitching like he has the last few times he has been out there, teams will show an interest. He is exactly the sort of guy I would have thought the Cubs would have brought in, had they been buying. Someone to eat some innings and give decent starts. He may have pitched himself into a perfect sell candidate.

    Yeah, the truth is they really don’t have much to sell. They are just in a bad spot. If they only better it will be just a lost season without them even having anything to sell for any real value. I don’t see them trading controlled guys for lower level prospects. I know everyone wants to see Happ, Suzuki, Nico, Swanson or even Morel traded because they have this belief we have better waiting in the minors. But in truth all that does is push the rebuild back more years. And we all know this is not a rebuild…… (sure it’s not). I think the Cubs will most likely do very little at the deadline. Just play the season out. Don’t expect much from them, but I don’t see anything major coming or going. Just a very terrible spot to be in. Maybe it will be so bad that they will have to do something with the FO. But I wouldn’t bet on it because I am not sure TR wants to hire someone who might actually want to spend money to win.

    The advantage to being a cubs fan in Az is I have no problems watching any of the games. Wait….. is that really an advantage???? 🤷

    Yep, damn pen gave up 1 run in 3 2/3 innings. Definitely this loss is on them. BTW, I do expect more runs now that Little is in. But hard to complain about the one up until Little. Edit: 1 run in 4 2/3. They do suck, but not today.

    Defense is keeping the Cubs borderline in this game. Or course they have to also score runs. Not sure that is going to happen.

    Not really. Had the 1-1 pitch been called a strike we don’t know if he makes the same pitch on 1-2 as he did 2-1. Everything is different. He isn’t pitching well, period. It’s not the umpires fault.

    He is the one guy I really wanted as well, that would have fit the Cubs plan. But they didn’t know if Morel was going to play 3rd.

    Please quote the line that has you believing anyone has suggested the Cubs don’t have to get better? I have seen it mentioned that the upcoming teams are not playing very well now so maybe the match up doesn’t look as bad as it did earlier. And that is just a fact. Giants aren’t playing well, including losing 2 of 3 to the Cubs. And the Brewers are on a 3 game losing streak. But I haven’t seen anyone suggest the Cubs don’t have to play well and start winning games/series.

    Yep, start winning series. If they take this one they go 5-4 on the homestand. Not great, but a start. It would be 2 series wins in a row. Which is what they need to start doing. Brewers seem to be struggling a little now, as are the Giants. Maybe this is a good time to catch both those teams. String together a few more series wins and they are back over .500 and starting to gain in the division. It is a long season. It they do need to start showing signs of coming around. Now would be a good time to start.

    I don’t agree with that. I think they will make small moves like a possible closer sort of guy, like Seward was last year, and an inning eating staring pitcher. Not give away a top 15 organizational guy. I don’t expect a big move on a guy like Alonso, as an example(or Guerrero, Robert or whoever else might be traded) Teams in the position the Cubs are in (which makes up probably 8 teams in the NL) just aren’t going to go big and give up top prospects for only a chance at the playoffs, IMO. Those bigger moves will be for teams like the Dodgers, Braves, Phillies and maybe even Milwaukee (assuming they keep a big lead in the central). I actually think the idea of Anderson and the Angels closer makes a lot of sense for the Cubs. It isn’t going to be this major deal, but it is probably all they should be doing.

    If you are talking about what you think the Cubs will do at the deadline, I completely agree. An innings eating starting pitcher and a possible closer is exactly what I expect from them. Nothing too costly.

    I feel disagreeing with the notion that Ohtani was going to go to LA all the while is just something people can do so that people can continue to complain about Jed and the Cubs FC/ownership. It was pretty apparent that was what Ohtani was going to do from the start. And when you add in the great deal he gave them allowing them to pay him later, it is almost impossible not to acknowledge that was the team all along. There are a lot of things to complain about when it comes to Jed, the FO and ownership, but not getting Ohtani is not one of them. And as far as that goes, I don’t give them credit for trying either. It is easy to say they were in on Ohtani and they made a competitive offer, and it is easy to actually have made a competitive offer, if you know he will never take it anyway. And it was never going to happen.

    This is one way to look at it. But another is what do people expect the fan base to do to show they are not giving the FO and ownership a pass? Who says people just let it go. I see a lot of people complaining about it here. Seems much of the fan base complains about it. I don’t think anyone just gives it a pass. I just don’t think the FO cares what the fan base wants. The choices of the fan base are to either stop watching them on tv, don’t buy the marquee app, stop going to the games all together or complain but support the team. Many fans choose to complain and support. Doesn’t mean they are giving the FO a pass and being okay with what is happening.

    This isn’t a thing. No front office will ever look at their team who makes the playoffs as a team that cannot advance. However, I do understand your point. They aren’t as good as the top teams, and no trade or trades are going to change that. But if a FO went about their business this way, every team except the Phillies, Dodger and Braves would be selling in the NL. They may still sell at some point. But IMO that would only happen if they were 3-4 games out of the WC spot and most definitely closer to the deadline. As a fan of the team I do understand your comment. And most likely at the end of the year, with hindsight of what happened you will be able to come back here and say “I told you they should sell because there was no way they could beat the Dodgers/Braves/Phillies”. Just like people did last year when they fell a game short. But you know a team whose fan base didn’t say that last year?The Dbacks. The year before, the Phillies. Perry much every year you can find a team who is not as talented as the top team in the league beating that team.

    I agree with you. As I said, there is no reason they shouldn’t get him, but they won’t. As Cuzi said, the mindset of how this organization is run is ass backwards. He is only too pricey because if that mindset. If they acted as a large market team his price would not be an issue.

    I agree we shouldn’t have any hope for Soto. But that is a reflection of the mind set of the FO and ownership. Really if Bellinger leaves there is no reason, other than the organization not willing to give out a 10+ year deal, for the Cubs not to be the best offer. They can sign him, a couple pen arms and upgrade at catcher and probably still be under the LT. And, frankly, that sucks. Because Aoto would be that superstar everyone always wants the Cubs to have. And with him and a decent hitting catcher that would help the offense immensely.

    TBH, yes Martinez would be the better option to me. But why are the Mets selling. The idea of “Cubs should get Alonso” or in this case, Martinez just seems crazy to me. Not because they won’t help, but because why would the Mets be trading either, especially now. I know you just suggested Martinez instead of Alonso, but I didn’t want to quote two posts, so I am answering you. Mainly because if the Mets were selling, I agree with you. I would go after Martinez. I have no interest in Alonso as a rental for his cost. And they aren’t going to extend him, and I wouldn’t want to anyway.

    If Bellinger opts out there is absolutely no reason not to be the highest bidder on Soto. They have the money. Then sign Jansen and maybe a couple pen arms. They don’t really need to spend on starting pitching so put it all on Soto. They won’t get him, I know that. But my comment is there really isn’t an excuse not too.

    I am not sure I would like the idea of a starter taking over in the 3rd or 4th inning with the thought of finishing the game. Wouldn’t that put the 8th and 9th inning into the dreaded category of facing guys for a 3rd time. Don’t even the best starters struggle with that? I know you are arguing for the idea, I am just adding into what you already said.

    He actually looks a lot better than Gomes. Both with the bat and defensively. That said, he is still not very good. To be a guy with a wRC+ of 77 and be 60 pts better than who you are replacing does show how bad that guy is rather than you actually being good. But it is much better. And he is definitely better in all phases defensively.

    The issue with your idea of Alonso is you suggest a team needs a superstar player and then use him as an example. He is not a superstar player. He hit homers. He is good at that. But that is it. And he is someone who very well will not age well and who already turned down a deal I wouldn’t want the Cubs to make for him. So he would be a rental. On top of that, the Cubs would have to lose someone to get him. Probably a decent prospect. And if we want to go further with the problems of bringing Alonso in, you can add the fact that Busch is actually outplaying him now. Sure, yiu can make a case for Alonso most likely is a better player, but you are replacing a spot you really don’t need to replace. And then one final issue with all of this Alonso talk is why are the Mets going to trade him. They are as much in the race as 8 other teams. I didn’t want him in the off season and don’t see how it is even a possibility to get him now.
