  1. I agree that I wouldn’t hate him as a bounce back option. But his salary would have to be more like $16M to $18M in order for me to like taking that chance on him. I agree he had a lot of things not to right for him last year. Another option on that same team is Rodriguez. Not sure what he would cost. But I would imagine he doesn’t have much surplus value, he shouldn’t cost much either. It looks like the Dbacks have to cut some payroll so he is also an option. And……he is left handed🤷
  2. Montgomery isn’t going to cost anything remotely of value. And the Dbacks would have to take some of his salary to move him. But, sure. If they ate $5M of his salary I might be fine with the Cubs taking him. Similar to a Bellinger trade.
  3. And you remember all of it😬
  4. WOW!!! That is brutal. And, like you said, he got paid for that nonsense. I also loved sports illustrated, but I used to get a subscription to The Sporting News as a Christmas gift every year from my uncle. That was also a great sports publication.
  5. I want to know that as well. But even spending $40M would be cutting payroll by $7M-$10M. I do think they will spend close to that amount, but not sure on who. For those who know how the team payroll is figured when counting it towards the LT would signing PCA to a $100M contract extension that was good for 8 years show up as PCA costing the Cubs $12.5 against the alt every year for 8 years, or would it only show up as $700,000, or whatever the amount is this year, and each year show up at the amount they structure the deal at? I only made up numbers for an example. I don’t know if they are realistic or not. That isn’t the point of this question.
  6. I think it will come in the way I of the pen. Maybe Yates and/or Minter. Maybe Robertson? Maybe Chafin. I am not counting on Scott. They may add a bench bat via FA. But I don’t see the heavy lifting coming from FA, unless they did trade major league talent for a MOR starter and then replaced the guy they lost with a FA. Example would be trade Suzuki for a MOR starter and then sign Alonso, Santander or Hernandez to replace Suzuki’s bat. I don’t think they would do that, but IMO that is the only way they add a big FA.
  7. Ok, they we can rule him out. For me it comes down to who can they trade for. With the possible exception of signing Hoffman and converting him back to a starter(which I am in the fence about) I don’t see any FA they will sign. They either cost too much (Flaherty or Burnes) or they are not certain to be any better than Assad or Wicks in the rotation. The problem with a trade is most pitchers rumored to be available are on teams that are trying to win. So they want major league talent back. I want the Cubs to deal from minor league talent. So really not sure how they get that MOR starter they are said to want.
  8. I’m going to get away from the business side of baseball because I think that is a very complicated issue and there really isn’t any good answers. I am going back to the Cubs needing another starting pitcher. A lot of different names have been tossed out so I would like to add another one. Sandy Alcantara. He is coming off an injury. Does anyone know if he will be ready to start this season? He makes $17M a year for the next 2 years and then a team option at $21M. Cubs and Marlins talked about Luzardo, so the Marlins much have an idea of who the Cubs are willing to trade. Does Alcantara at his salary and one more year of control left, cost more than Luzardo, who was paid less but one less year of control? Is Alcantara a bigger injury risk than Luzardo? I feel his upside is higher. If his medicals are good and they expect him back at the start of the season he might be a nice get.
  9. I think he got 10 years for $700M and for luxury tax purposes, because of the deferred money they are only getting $42M a year charged towards the tax. So, yes, it does affect it to defer money.
  10. I don’t believe this to be true. But if it gets Tucker signed to an extension I am all for it. The reason I don’t think this is true is because I honestly do not think the owners have a clue how to fix this situation. They all have different agendas. What is good for smaller market teams the large market teams won’t like, and vice versa. This is strictly 30 different companies trying to agree to play under one set of rules. For teams like the A’s, Pirates, etc you can’t punish the big spenders enough for their liking. For the large markets, all punishment is too severe. I don’t see how any FO can forecast what future punishments will be.
  11. I also agree with biittner as well. Something has to be changed. Not sure it is a cap, because I don’t think the players will like that. I think this is going to cause a significant stoppage in play before it will be figured out. There is no easy answer, but I don’t think the cap will do it.
  12. You really think the deciding factor is because of the actual added penalty for going over the LT will be the reason they won’t sign him? If not for that one reason they would? I don’t think they will sign him, but there is no chance that added penalty matters.
  13. Maybe outside of Chicago. But I even doubt that. Definitely not in Chicago. Sox were always the team with a chip on their shoulder because they Cubs were the more popular team. A good day for the Sox fans was the Cubs losing. They didn’t care if they won, as long as the Cubs lost.
  14. When were the Sox ever more popular than the Cubs? When were you a kid? I am 64 years old and I don’t recall the Sox have never been more popular than the Cubs in my lifetime.
  15. So if what you are suggesting is the case, and it very well can be, there will be no high dollar signing or a trade for high priced starting pitcher unless that high priced guy is on the last year of his contract or as a FA, he accepts a one year deal. Kind of the reason signing Buehler made some sense. This philosophy would also suggest they won’t sign Scott to close either. He would cost too much moving to next year. I guess they can still trade for Cease, but then he most likely would not be extended. They can also trade for someone like Lopez but know they then have to trade either him or Tailon next off season, regardless of the return. I tend to agree they will not go over next year. Also, this way if thinking does open up the possibility of Verlander or Scherzer for one year. Not sure I like that idea, but they would probably sign for a year.
  16. And then a bunch of bad players filling out the rest of the team. Besides that, if they did sign Burnes this year that would account for almost all the money they have available. Maybe they would get a pen arm for $5M. And that is it. I don’t see it, but maybe they try winning with starting pitching and defense.
  17. Highly doubt the Cubs are remotely an option. But playing it out, if they did sign him you can forget about a Tucker extension.
  18. Plus there is no reason for better defenders to sit while he plays. Five a guy a day off from playing the field is one thing. Playing a worse defender as often as a GG defender is not practical. And do we know for sure he said that, or is that speculation? That is what I am uncertain about.
  19. We don’t even know if the Suzuki news is being overblown or it really bothers him not to be on the field. But I do imagine if he really does want to play the field he could be out there 50 times a year between filling in for Happ on occasion, playing right if/when PCA struggles and they move Tucker to center and playing right if/when the Cubs want to give Busch a day off and put Tucker at 1st. And that is assuming no injuries in the outfield.
  20. Nice list. Well thought out. But I would have Lopez much higher. Maybe even 2nd option. And if Jax was added to a Lopez trade that would be option #1 for me. I know your list wasn’t meant to be all encompassing, so just to add a few more ideas, which would fall in your 3.rd option, I would add Tampa starter. Maybe Suarez of Sanchez from the Phillies. One of the young pitchers from the Marlins all as interesting creative trades. Most would call for a 3rd team since neither the Phillies nor the Mariners would be looking for prospects. I don’t see Flaherty or any FA pitcher being added, with the possible exception of Hoffman, or a 5th starter/swing man guy. And finally, the only way I would want Castillo would be a Seattle salary dump.
  21. I thought 1908 originally suggested it, so I went with it. Just assumed he played some first base. Maybe he isn’t an option. But on days they sit PCA, Tucker can play center and Suzuki get in the field in right.
  22. Honestly, I would rather keep Suzuki as well. Him not being happy could just as easily being overstated as well. We don’t t know. I can see where he can play the field twice a week. When Busch sits Tucker can move to first and Suzuki in right. He can also give Happ a day off from the field. He has not been a great fielder, but he isn’t awful either. His issues get magnified because he does seem to miss a ball at a very bad spot. But overall he is pretty close to a league average outfielder, slightly below average. Lots of slightly below average outfielder start on a regular basis.
  23. I can see Suzuki dealt for a pitcher and then a FA bat signed. The problem with that is what FAbare getting. As an example, I want no part of any FA bat on a 6/$150 deal. And that might be the market.
  24. Even if they don’t come away with a pitcher before the Sasaki decision, it is not because they are waiting in that decision. That is just a dumb thing for a FO to do. It might happen that way because they don’t come to an agreement on someone. They can’t pull of a trade or they are waiting the market out in someone(also a dumb idea), but I am certain they are not sitting around waiting on Sasaki to decide. Even if he did come here they would be fine with another pitcher. And with Manaea getting $75M for 3 years I am pretty sure they can forget about Flaherty. He has to be AT LEAST 4/$100M, and I don’t see that happening.
