  1. Back to non Tucker talk, is it possible the Cubs filled heir pen with signing Thielbar and trading for Morgan and Festa? Is it possible they are doing this again without bringing in a dependable”ish” arm for some decent dollars? And if that is the case, where is this money they saved with Bellinger going to be spent?
  2. Exactly. If a team is not willing to sign the mega deals that are the norm for the stars, they will never have stars. Even if they are home grown they will be gone as soon as they hit free agency agency. I understand (a little bit more)the POV of Stratos if the Cubs were not a major market, but they are. He is the perfect person to start acting like a major market for. And being $40M+under the LT they can afford to sign him now and take $37M as his LT salary instead of $17M, and still have $20M to spend on a pitcher. Honestly now is the time to act big market.
  3. If he signed a 10 year deal wouldn’t it start now? He is 27. So why would he be 29 when it starts? Let’s use $40M as a number for 9 years after this one and $16M this one. So 10 years for $376M. Does that seem about right? If he is worth it and even more for the first 4 years and then the next 4 only plays at the level he is being paid, is it so terrible for 2 years he is being paid a little too much than what he is worth? They are a major market. They should be able to carry an inflated contract and still be good. High budget teams do it all the time. If you want great players, and I do, sometimes you also have to pay them when they are not so great. And, tbh, $37.6M annual might not be that much of an k repay in 2032-2033. Bottom line is the Cubs can afford it.
  4. So much for a surprise Steele extension.
  5. You have more faith in the Ricketts than I do. I absolutely think they would parade Sosa in front of adoring Cubs fans as the big deal this off season. I hope they do more. But I wouldn’t put that past them. Add Tucker too. And it will keep the fans happy. At least those at that lovefest convention.
  6. An extension would be a happy surprise. But I don’t see that happening.
  7. Agreed. We are not talking about people who post here. Talking about the Cubs fan base, they love their players. There is a difference between not wanting someone on the team because he isn’t very good any longer and being a fan and supporting the player. I think most fans still love Javy, Bryant, & Rizzo. That doesn’t mean they want them back. Kyle received a great ovation when he finished his career. He will always be loved by the fan base. But that doesn’t mean the fan base wanted him out there pitching with his 5.00 era. The fan base absolutely did not turn their backs on the 16’ team after they won. I don’t even know how that can be suggested or what it even means.
  8. You do say some ridiculous stuff (when I can decipher it and understand it) but this might be your all time best. Cubs fans love their players. They support them their entire career. All of those guys from the 16’ team are still cheered for when they come to town. Most were very upset the organization let them all leave. It did turn out to be the right move, btw, but your post suggest fans turned their back on them. And that’s just not even close to true. And when Sammy is announced he will get probably the loudest ovation of the weekend. Another example of a fan base adoring its players.
  9. Sammy being invited back in could be the “exciting thing” that happens at this years convention. Not something I care too much about. But they can play that up at the convention.
  10. Agree. And, if they did have interest in Hoffman it would be strictly as a starter. So it could be either Robertson or Yates, and then also add Hoffman(to start). IMO Scott is as much out of the question as Burnes was. I don’t see that ever happening.
  11. Kind of a fine line between quality pick up and dumpster dive, if you ask me. A few years ago the Cubs signed Smyly to something similar. With the benefit of hindsight it didn’t work so it goes down as a dumpster dive bad signing. We really don’t know Lorenzen will be a quality signing. I’m just saying a lot of guys in this range waffle between dumpster dive and quality signing, depending on their eventual outcome. Lorenzen might be ok, but hardly something Inam upset the Cubs missed out on.
  12. Not enough alcohol for me to believe this would ever happen.
  13. I will take the over on Ohtani innings for his career.
  14. Agreed. I will take the over on a $20M average salary. Even if he tanks his one year prove it deal will be similar to Montgomery. And I still think there are several teams that will go at least 4 years for him at over $22M a year.
  15. You and Jed can stick to that number. And then he won’t be a Cub. He will cost much more than that.
  16. I feel like you are wanting a pen that doesn’t exist. I am willing to bet most fan base complain about their pen. And even if their team puts together this “dominate” pen, when it struggled the fan base would suggest it isn’t very good. I think a lot of teams fan base hates their pen. It is the easiest thing to rag on. Even a good pen will blow some games.
  17. I just don’t see him for the Cubs. I expect a pitcher added via a trade. Hard to believe the Cubs win on an offer to him. I would think he could get 5/$120M or more. And don’t see that from the Cubs. But 🤷
  18. It does appear that way. I agree.
  19. I agree. None of the names you mentioned are guys that cannot be replaced by a better player. They are not guys you would use as an excuse not to get better. I would be shocked if Thompson and Zastryzny made the team. To suggest they won’t add a pen arm because of those guys would be the FO taking the fanbase as idiots. To suggest they won’t add a bench bat because of Workman or Brujan is almost as insulting.
  20. I don’t know about that exact trade, but you have a good point that the Cubs could trade for a bench bat who can cover 1st and 3rd. Casey Schmitt is another example. I am sure there are many more.
  21. I just hope if he visits Chicago the city isn’t in an a artic freeze or having a blizzard. Hope for mild weather if he does visit.
