  1. But it is not just signing Bregman. If they were actually a big market acting team, of course, Bregman would be the best option. But is he the best option if they then have to trade Nico? You leave out that part. You also suggest people are saying just sign JT and don’t worry about Bregman. That isn’t what most people are saying. They are saying use that money on a pitcher they trade for THEN sign JT as a bench bat. And it doesn’t have to be JT. Could be Canha or someone else. If they did that they might even have enough for another pen arm. If all they did was sign Bregman, sure, they add a 4 win player. But if you lose a 4 win player to do so have you gotten better? Why not add a 3.5WAR pitcher to replace a 1.5WAR pitcher and then add to the bench and maybe even another pen arm. That is the true discussion. Not if Bregman is better than JT. For the record I agree with you that the Cubs should act big market. They should sign Bregman, keep Nico and trade for King or Cease and be comfortably between the 1st and 2nd tier of the LT. They would be a clear favorite in the division and a 90+ win team. There is no reason a major market team cannot operate at that level, except ownership won’t allow it.
  2. If we keep JT in the proper perspective I think most can at least agree the Cubs should spend some money on a decent bench bat. Doesn’t have to be JT. Could be Canha. I am sure there are a few others. But the pool is dwindling. We also have understand this is based on NOT getting Bregman. It is also not the most important thing they do with they money if they don’t get Bregman. I solid pitcher would be more important, IMO. But a bat would be second. If they go to the trade deadline $10M under their max they will be fine. They do not need to be $30M below.
  3. Here is where I am with Turner. If they get Bregman all conversation about Turner is out. If they don’t get Bregman the best use of money and far and away more important than a bench bat should be for a starting pitcher in a trade. After that I would put a solid bench bat. I do believe a right handed hitting guy who could play first wouldn’t about 250 AB with the Cubs. Besides filling in for injuries he can DH when any outfielder is given a day off. Plus inevitably someone will get hurt during the year. At $7M to $8M they would still have enough money to go after King or Cease or even a Seattle pitcher if they want to give up prospects. I would put Turner, or even Canha, ahead of another pen arm. I would much rather spend on a bench bat than dumpster dive for another staring pitcher in the Quintana, Lynn, Corbin, etc section of free agents. Quality arm first, someone to slot ahead of Taillon, bench bat next.
  4. I agree. Cubs will most likely want him signed soon. With a start of the season in 6 weeks I can’t imagine they want him behind. Plus the early schedule is brutal. You don’t win a division in April, but you certainly can lose one with a terrible start.
  5. Cool. Honestly i am not sure how I feel about Bregman for $30M. Lose a 2nd and 5th rd pick and most likely have to trade Nico. And then we actually hope he is here for only 1 year. I still think they can make the team better in ‘25 by adding a solid starting pitcher and a bench bat or two, instead of the Bregman signing.
  6. This is entirely possible. As my post said “if all are equal”. The scenerio you suggest is not all equal. I agree with you that if the Cubs have a better deal he will come here. I also agree that the Red Sox make some sense for Arenado.
  7. I think if it comes down to Boston and the Cubs and all things are equal he will choose Boston. He just has a better chance of putting up bigger numbers in Boston than he does at Wrigley. If he is signing a short term deal I would think he wants to go into next year with good numbers. Cubs can offer him playing with Pressley and Tucker, so that is an advantage for them. But IMO if he wants a bigger contract after this one, he will go to the Red Sox.
  8. They have talked all spring about getting Devers off of 3rd. Even if they traded for Arenado they would put Devers at 1st. They have also tried getting rid of Yoshida. It is no more random than the Cubs going after Bregman to then have to most likely move Nico.
  9. I have to think both Bregman and Boras know the Cubs aren’t going to budge on years. So if he really wants the Cubs he may need to make it official soon. I think if he hasn’t committed it is because he does want another team to come up in years.
  10. I have to think something happens by the end of this weekend. Teams are all reporting. Time to make a decision.
  11. Count me in on this way of thinking. Turner can still hit. I don’t care if he is 40. He posted OPS+ of 114 last year. I would take that on the bench. Canha would be fine as well. We are talking one year. Give me a guy who can hit with a little pop and better than league average. I also realize a bench isn’t needed that much with the Cubs basically having a set line up. But if they don’t get Bregman, after hopefully getting a pitcher for the rotation, a good bench bat is the next most important thing.
  12. Ok, I actually agree. 👍 I think that is why Turner talk is coming out. I think all teams mentioned by Olney for Bregman are also in on Turner. I think the Turner talk is being mentioned to perhaps spur a decision by Bregman. If the Cubs could swing a trade for a pitcher who slots ahead of Taillon and sign Turner, IMO, that is a better team than one that signs Bregman and then trades Nico for a prospect.
  13. Isn’t this a thread about Turner? Shouldn’t the Bregman comments be in that threat? Let’s try to keep this straight. Seemed you were going there when you discussed backup first baseman, but yiu veered back to Bregman. Turner is obviously an option only if Bregman is not signed. He would be a solid back up 1st baseman plan. Maybe even a DH when the Cubs give an outfielder a day off and Suzuki moves to the outfield. Maybe even 10-12 games at 3rd. The biggest issue with Turner is the Cubs have to show him he will get playing time.
  14. Oh, ok. I didn’t miss that. I thought he had suggested a specific amount on a deal. I still don’t think the Cubs end up with him. Which is fine as long as they pivot and add talent elsewhere.!
  15. On a one year deal he would be a solid bench bat. OPS+ of 114 last year. Not going to get a better back up first baseman than that. And not on a minor league contract.
  16. I wouldn’t be opposed to that.
  17. I think that 5 year amount is very high, especially with player friendly options. And if he has anything close to that he would have signed. I think the best offer he got was the original from the Astros, 6/$156. I also think if he has something at that amount the Cubs would be out by now. And maybe they are.!
  18. I really wish Bregman would just decide so the Cubs can go about the rest of the off season. I honestly think they are a far better team not signing him but then using that money elsewhere. Maybe they do overpay for Cease. I don’t really like the idea but I have to admit they would be very good this year. Maybe Assad or Wicks and then Cassie and either Canario or a young minor leaguer gets it done. Then sign a few bench bats. If that doesn’t get Cease, maybe it gets King. Either would work. Or maybe Seattle offers Kirby or Gilbert up. But they would cost more because they come with control. If the Cubs did get a starter to break up Steele and Imanaga they would have a very nice rotation. Pen appears solid and their everyday line up is good. Clear favorite in the central and a real threat in the playoffs. Other pitchers what could work would be Ober, Ryan, or Lopez of the Twins. I think spending that money on a rotation piece is more valuable than spending it on Bregman, especially if they then have to trade Nico.
  19. Maybe this is what Peller is waiting on. Injuries in a rotation on a team who expects to win next year might make a team desperate Not sure Assad moves that needle for the Cubs.
  20. What did they give up for 2 years of Cease? They can’t get more than they gave up.
  21. And that is exactly how he should go about it. But make the annual the highest. I have no issues with this. Just wish he would made up his mind.
  22. I agree with the first two. But the bean counters are just people talking realistically. You can’t talk about what the Cubs SHOULD do and not discuss the budget. Otherwise you are not being realistic.
  23. As I said, there can be one but then not also Assad or Wicks. And if they do get more, I hope it is from someone else. They don’t pay that much for Cease for 2 years. If that’s Peller being reasonable IMO they will just have them all year and lose then for nothing except a draft pick comp for the QO. If he is ok with that, fine.
  24. How long before the Padres get reasonable about Cease or King? And when they do what shoukd the cost be? I feel if the Cubs gave them either Wicks or Assad they shouldn’t also have to give one of their top prospects. Maybe a younger guy with high risk high reward. Maybe Canario? That is losing a pitcher for one year and getting BOR maybe MOR starter for at least 4 years. And you get some young talent. And it is saving them money. If someone offers more, that is on them. I don’t feel the Cubs have to lose Cassie, Alcantara or even Triantos in this sort of deal. Now, if they don’t want Assad or Wicks I can understand why they would want a better prospect. But not both a major league pitcher and top prospects.
