  1. I think if the Cubs have $16M or so left I would rather see it spent in the bench. Maybe Cahna, J. Turner or Grichik for a right handed bat and Moncada for a left handed bat. I think they have enough options in the pen to have a good bullpen. I count 7 pen spots filled without including Brown, Wicks or Assad, who I think will all be pitching at AAA. Maybe if Brown has an impressive spring he takes the 8th spot. I would do consider that a good off season. Could have been better by investing more in a pitcher other than Rea, but still, good. Even spending $16M gives them a cushion to add at the trade deadline.
  2. I think he will be in AAA to start the season. Starting. And this is especially so if they add another pen arm. Right now they have: Pressley, Pearson, Thielbar, Morgan, Miller, Merryweather and Hodge in the pen. That is 7 guys. If they signed another arm the pen is full. And that doesn’t count Brown, Wicks, Assad, Thompson and Poteet. There are several others as well. I just think anyone with options will start at AAA. Ideally that last spot would be another lefty, but Chafin, as you mentioned earlier, is a reverse split guy.
  3. I would bet Rea is #5 over Assad.
  4. You might be right in Brown and Horton. But I am talking about filling in for maybe 5 to 8 starts. I was answering JD94 when he suggested Birdsell. I assumed he was talking about filling in. I think between the 5 guys they have in the rotation, + Assad and Wicks, guys like Brown and Horton will only be needed 5 to 8 starts. I am not sure the Cubs closed the door on Brown starting, but I do agree it is probably not likely that he does, full time. (at least for now)
  5. I disagree. I think a solid bench bat is actually more important than another pen arm. Love to have some to fill in for Busch or PCA against a roigh lefty. Or a solid bat to pinch him. Dumpster diving is not the way to go, IMO.
  6. Why not Brown and Horton helping as MOR starters?
  7. I feel the idea of a mid rotation arm has passed. I would have liked that, but I think Rea is the last rotation arm they are signing. I wish they went mid rotation arm before signing Rea.
  8. That would make for a solid off season. Would love Turner, but I think he will end up somewhere where he can get more AB. So Canha is fine. As for the pen, I would take either of those guys with an edge to a Robertson. And I agree, they should have enough money for both.
  9. With Presley costing $8.5M shouldn’t the Cubs still have enough money for Robertson and a good bench bat? I don’t feel they are even close to $230M. And even at that amount it leaves them plenty of money deadline deals.
  10. 👍spoke it into existence.
  11. I get that. But I am sure the Astros made him aware he was being talked about in a trade. He had to know it was possible. I respect he negotiated the right to decide if he will accept a trade or not. And whatever he decides is fine. It is HIS decision. But not deciding is what is annoying. I’m not even suggesting the Cubs should put a time where they pull the deal. I am just strictly speaking about a player making a decision and how it shouldn’t take this long.
  12. So how long is reasonable for a player to decide it he wants to stay where he is or if he is willing to play somewhere else? Pressley had to know he was being talked about in trades. He earned or negotiated the right to accept or deny a trade. But shouldn’t he know by now what he wants to do? Maybe being older and remembering when players didn’t have the rights they have now or weren’t paid anywhere near what guys are paid now makes me less patient with players of today. But as far as I am concerned Pressley is taking way too long to decide. If his family doesn’t want to move, stay. He earned that right. If he wants to close and maybe make more money on his next contract accept the trades. Either way has it merits. But make a fricken decision.
  13. If you are saying he makes one offer and then doesn’t talk to others and know about what it takes to make something else happen, I disagree. And I sure hope that isn’t the case. I believe while Pressley is deciding he is talking to Robertson ,Stanek and others….. If he is also looking for an infield bat he is talking to guys like Moncada, Dejong, and others. Maybe even discussing a trade for that bat. Same with the outfield. He has to have an idea of cost of either Canhu, Bader, Grichik or Joe. Maybe even offer into any of those guys at any of those positions while he waits on Pressley. I do agree he has to balance the spending.(per ownership) But that cannot mean he doesn’t have several things going at once.
  14. Jim Hickman and Keith Moreland for left and right 100 rbi season.
  15. This is true. Maybe they give him whatever he needs as long as they are still pursuing other players. But as soon as something else becomes a reality, if he hasn’t decided, they need to either get an answer or make the other move. As long as he isn’t holding anything up, I guess it is ok.
  16. I used Rizzo for left field AS and Baez AS right field. Both .04%. Each played at least one inning there.
  17. I think a week is very generous. I would say by the end of the weekend, until they have another deal ready to go. Whichever came first. Can’t sit around and wait to see if he wants to come or not.
  18. I came in at a total of 2 today. Been playing long time so you start to remember a lot of facts you can use later. Used 7 Cubs in my grid.
  19. I would like to see both as well. Just not sure what they have in this imaginary break even budget. I would hope enough to add at least one more decent bat to the bench. If they are working with $33M and total cost of Pressley and Robertson comes to $23M, they still have room. But if Nightengale is right and they are going to take a cut more substantial than just going $7M short of the LT line they may not have that much money. Bench may end up what it is now. I am not sure that’s a good bench. If they can’t go to the line, I would rather they spend the Robertson money on a good bench bat.
  20. If the trade doesn’t cost you any assets, and it shouldn’t, I might still do it. Maybe a second year guaranteed if he reaches some goals? Maybe Astros kick in some money if there has to be a second year added. I think there are scenarios where I would be ok with a second year.
  21. Are you saying because of the budget or playing time? If it is budget, I agree. But it would be awesome if both could stay. Shaw can just go back to AAA. That is the best Cubs team possible. Too bad our ownership is small market.
  22. I am sure he will try to use the NTC as leverage for something more. Not sure he will get it though. The sweetener should be he gets to close. If he does well he makes more money next year than he does if he stays in Houston.
  23. I agree. But the report on the mystery team was it was a team “out west”, which to me speaks geographically, not division. Who knows. For once I am going to agree with Chibear. Wake me up when something is done and official😅
  24. Not “likely” to see if he is worth a one year deal. More like STRICKLY” to see if he is worth a one year deal. And that can be said for all the teams watching him.
  25. I thought they were done spending. I also didn’t think of them as a west team. But you are correct, they are. Guess we will have to wait and see. Wouldn’t shock me if the Cubs didn’t get him or Robertson.
