I have no issue with trading Bellinger and trading for Pressley. What I am saying is if they kicked in $10M when trading Bellinger and took all of Pressley’s contract, maybe they get a better prospect from the Yankees and give up a lesser prospect to the Astros and have $20M to spend still. If that money ends up in Ricketts pocket that sucks. That is all I am saying.

$30M at the deadline is overkill. We are talking about paying someone for 1/3 of the season. Sure, would be nice to get whoever you really want at that time. But they don’t need that much. So why all the penny pinching until now? If they sign Bregman I understand. But if they keep, why? Isn’t it possible if they ate more of Bellinger’s contract they could have gotten a better return? Or having the Astros kick in $5.5M. Maybe had they not did that they would have been able to trade a lesser prospect.

The thing is if they don’t sign Bregman what are they saving money for? Ricketts bank account? There isn’t anything left to spend it on? Pivetta? Canha? I doubt they do either. So they actually just save the money they got by trading Bellinger for salary relief. Which I really don’t like.

I understand that. But I think the original comparison also has Cease in it. And if that was too much take out one of the bench bats. I also agree the Cubs can’t make the Padres trade Cease for what the Cubs want to give them. So if it ends up Brasier and Bregman I would consider it a good off season where they may need to add to the rotation at some point or a young guy will have to step up.

This is true. I guess you can see how Shaw does early if nice missed time. If he hits a trade doesn’t have to be Nico. It can be Suzuki instead. Maybe a trade deadline trade similar to the Lester for Cespedes deal goes down at the ASB.

I did make a suggestion a few days ago that maybe the Cubs did offer a multi year, creative deal, But I was was told that wasn’t a possibility. Looks like that is exactly what they did. As for being excited about it, I can’t say I am. I feel there is better use of $25M to $30M for this team. I saw Grichek signed for $5M. He would have been a good bench bat. I would think Canha can’t be more. I would be happy with him and Robertson as FA and a trade for Cease. I like that better than adding Bregman.

What prospects do the Cardinals think they will get for an aging high, overpriced very average ballplayer? They are getting anything but salary relief.

Honesty I think they can make better use of $25m to $27M Bregman would cost by signing Robertson and maybe Cahna and trading for Cease.

I agree with you, but I do think you go just a bit too far. Yes, he could get 30 starts and 160 innings. But during the course of a baseball season things happen. I definitely do not think 100 innings is the best we can hope for. But I think 160 is aggressive. I wouldn’t be shocked by it, but if I were to put a number on Boyd’s innings next year I would go around 130-140. Hopefully they are in the playoffs, so he would get several more there as well.

Sure, on a team where money doesn’t matter Flaherty would be my choice too. But then again, 29 teams passed on what amounts to a reasonable contract. So maybe he is more of an injury risk than Boyd. And, with the Cubs, salary does matter. Yes, it sucks. They should spend more. But as fans we need to let that go because it isn’t changing. So they went with what they felt was better a value.

You’re leaving out Flaherty can also leave after 1 year. Basically he has a 1 year $25M deal. And if he sucks he can get year 2 for $10M or $20M.

I also wanted a better pitcher than Rea. But seeing what Flaherty got tells me it was never going to be him. IMO the Cubs think he won’t hold up. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t trade for Lopez or Cease. Or a Mariners pitcher. Maybe look at a Pivetta. I do worry about the rotation. And it is frustrating when you realize he had the money for a better pitcher. Maybe it still happens🤷. I doubt it, but it can.

This is fair. It also backs my comment that 100 innings is not the best case scenario for Boyd. If he is effective he can go 130 or more innings. And be fine for a playoff run.

This is where I am with him. And if it was them babying him a little, that is understandable. Maybe he wasn’t full on ready, and they had an amazing one. I would think the bubble wrap should be off him this year. Sure, he might not make 30 starts. But he might. No reason to assume 100 innings is his best possible outcome.

Well in 23 he had TJS which ended his season at 71 innings. Then he didn’t come back for 14 months or so, limiting his ‘24 innings to 39 plus playoffs. Before the surgery, in ‘22 he had arm issues. If the TJS is a success, as many are these days, that would mean his arm should be fine. So why would 100 innings be his best possible outcome. It may be the eventual outcome. I am not arguing that. It is the hyperbole suggesting that is the best they can hope for, that I disagree with. I would guess the Cubs would expect a bit more. He isn’t a kid. So if he is injury free he will make his starts. And since his arm is now surgically repaired there is reason to believe he may not get insured this year.

You say you get it, but then go right back to making a statement as if it is fact, when it is actually just your opinion. If Boyd is healthy why is 100 innings the BEST they can hope for? When he came back last year he had 8 starts and then the playoffs. He wasn’t skipped or he didn’t miss a start. Why can’t he start 30 games this year? He isn’t a kid. He doesn’t need to be coddled. He may only throw 100 innings. That might happen. But that’s not the best they can hope for. They can hope for 30 starts and 160 innings. It might be more likely he throws closer to 100 innings than 160. But that is not the best they can hope for.

I also have to think something is not exactly right with Flaherty. 29 teams did not offer him better than this deal. iMO that has to mean his medicals are scary. Remember the Orioles backed out of a deal last year. How do so many pitchers get much higher than their projected salary and he get so little? Something scared away.

And if they spent substantial money on the pen and rotation I would be fine with a weaker bench. You are probably right, they won’t add to the bench. It just sucks that I also doubt they add $25M worth of arms. Ricketts is just going to pocket the money he saved trading Bellinger.

I don’t think they have enough to get Robertson if they signed Flaherty. Might have to aim lower for the pen arm. Maybe Chandon or Brasier. But wouldn’t mind Flaherty on a short deal.

You might be right that they don’t sign another bench bat. But how is this team set with position players? You think a bench of Kelly, Berti, and what other 2 guys they have on the roster of below average players is a good bench? I don’t. I know it won’t be used much, but they have money to improve it. So not doing so is choosing to pocket the money they saved on trading Bellinger instead of improving the team. If they used the money so they can afford Cease and Robertson, or if they signed Flaherty or Bregman with that money, I could understand not upgrading the bench. But assuming that doesn’t happen, I sure hope they improve the bench. As I say earlier, sucks they use the LT line as a cap. Sucks even worse not to at least come close to it to improve the team. They don’t need $20M at the deadline. While I agree with you that if they had that extra they should spend it then, I doubt they will. Plus, spending it now gives them a better chance to even consider adding at the deadline. And having $8M to spend should be plenty.
